Nvidia's boosting supply of the GTX 1650 for gaming PCs. Lucky us | PC Gamer

Worldwide graphics card supply is a big ol' dumpster fire right now, and is likely to be the same for the foreseeable future. So finding any GPU in stock I guess can be called a win. But it's a damning indictment of just how bad the GPU crisis has gotten that rumours of Nvidia expanding the supply of the TU117-powered GTX 1650 to the desktop market are causing some excitement.

Yay, a graphics card you might actually be able to buy, even if it's one you might not actually want to.

The Turing GPU is the lowest spec silicon of the last generation, but was reportedly undersupplied to the desktop market, and skewed towards mobile because it was such a big seller in terms of budget gaming laptops. You can still buy a whole host of GTX 1650 notebooks right now, and they're fine, but comparatively slow next to the latest silicon.
But that means the GPUs themselves are still getting manufactured in decent numbers and, given the dearth of desktop cards, it looks like Nvidia is starting to skew production the other way again in order to increase the supply of the chips into the desktop DIY market.

The report suggests that the increased supply will take hold from April into May, delivering more GTX 1650 cards into the hands of budget PC gamers everywhere. And it likely will go into the hands of gamers, not because of some smart hash rate limiter, or some clever anti-miner retail shenanigans, but because it is—if you'll pardon the language—too **** for Ethereum mining. That 4GB framebuffer and the fact it will only get you some 16 MH/s at best, means it's not really ideal for mining.

Even Nvidia's weakest CMP GPU offers 26 MH/s; that's a mining-focused card that looks like it's 100 percent based on the GTX 1660 Super silicon.

Though I expect if someone wanted to buy tens of thousands GTX 1650 cards it could probably still turn a profit somewhere along the line, but that seems like a whole lot of effort. Still, tough to get too excited about the potential increase in supply of one desktop weakheart GPU. Well, unless your current card has died and you're entire rig is down because of it.
But possibly the most depressing part of this depressing story is that the pricing for the GTX 1650 is actually going to be increased from its $150 origins. This story has come from Chinese media, however, so it's not totally guaranteed the extra desktop supply will happen globally, but we're all suffering so there's a good chance it will.

Personally I feel modders will wait for the upper level gaming video cards.

This is exactly the GPU I look for when I want a gaming GPU. It may be good for a hold over while a lot of people wait for the newest series.

It’s insane to think of people being excited about a graphics card not even as powerful as a 780 Ti...

This is great news to gamers that need a GPU right now :o)

I have serious gamer friends that are stuck home, thanks to the pandemic, that are basically 24/7/365 in front of their PC, gaming all the time except for a wee bit of sleep & bathroom breaks & meals. These guys all have either 780 Ti, 980 Ti & 1080s & a few Quadros that play all the latest games without issues. I was surprised when they told me that you do NOT need a 30 series GPU to play ANY game nowadays because older cards still work with modern games just lesser visual quality.. They said it would be nice to have but not needed to play any current game. They told me that the newer GPUs give them better & smoother graphics with less artifacts but not really needed nor justified in the huge expense :o)

GTX1650 isn't a "gaming" chip though. It's a desktop chip. This is proof positive you can label "gamer" on anything and sell it.

Yeah... it's hardly better than an APU really. On the other hand people without any working graphics outputs and an existing PC will need them. The prices on used 750 Ti cards are insane right now just because people need to replace failed GPUs just to use the PC.

I mean it’s not a bad budget end card. It really depends what kind of gamer you are. If you’re not looking to run the latest AAA titles at high graphics settings, it’s ok.

Yeah, now's the time to sell them. Someone can actually use them, and I like to know the hardware is being used rather than sitting in a corner collecting dust until it eventually, inevitably gets thrown out yet still works. I've even seen GTX 480 FTW's on eBay again... though  things are not so bad yet that they sold

friend of mine had his R9 390 on him, he offered me $60 for my spare GTX 470, i told him he can borrow it, but i want it back when he can get another gpu, but holy crap $60 for a GTX 470 in 2021 shouldn't be a thing

still have my GTX 760 SC (ACX) 2GB stored in my garage.. working fine actually!

i could sell it for 100 euros at least given the price of some things right now but... nope... i really cannot take advantage of people in need of a pc.  Karma is always awake!
