UK PCMag - Nvidia: We Expect GPU Supplies to Improve in Second Half of 2022

“It’ll take a while, but Nvidia expects supplies for the company’s graphics cards to improve by the second half of 2022.

Chief Financial Officer Colette Kress made the comment at the UBS Global TMT conference on Monday while discussing Nvidia’s efforts to boost manufacturing amid the ongoing chip shortage. ‘The company as a whole will take the appropriate work to continue to procure more supply,’ she said. ‘We’ve been able to grow quite well during this year, each quarter, sequentially growing. And we do continue to plan to do that for Q4.”

Kress then added: ‘So we believe we will be in a better situation in terms of supply when we look at the second half of next year.’

Supplies are expected to improve when Nvidia releases its next-generation GPUs, which will succeed the still-hard-to-find RTX 3000 series. To increase production, Kress said Nvidia has been entering into more longer-term commitments for manufacturing capacity, which involves pouring billions into spending agreements.

‘Longer-term can be more than a year,’ Kress said on Monday. ‘You’ve seen us now enter into agreements that will take us out many years in terms of long-term capacity needs.’

However, Kress said it remains unclear when the GPU market will reach a ‘stabilization point,’ where supply can fully meet demand. ‘We’ll have to wait until we finish the holiday seasons to see how that inventory in the channel is looking,’ she added.

Despite the optimism from Kress, there’s good reason to be skeptical that Nvidia’s graphics cards will become easier to buy next year. Even if the company can churn out more GPUs, there’s still little to stop scalpers and cryptocurrency miners from snatching up supplies from desperate consumers. In the last year alone, pricing for Nvidia’s RTX 3000 cards has skyrocketed to obscene levels, making it hard for consumers to build an affordable gaming PC.

‘We'd love to bring that back down (the pricing). We believe bringing that down really just takes providing a reasonable amount of supply in the market versus the lean amounts that we have today,’ Kress said.

To discourage cryptocurrency miners from buying up the cards, the company has also been nerfing the Ethereum mining capabilities of its RTX 3000 cards. Nevertheless, the handicapping only restricts the mining by 50%. At the same time, owners can still mine other cryptocurrencies using Nvidia’s graphics cards.”

My thoughts:  The above responses from NVIDA’s CFO are about the same as asking a politician about when will lower taxes return.

I don’t expect much change until late next year.

Don't even need to read the article to know nVidia is lying.  They said the same thing about Q3 2020, and again about Q3 2021

Pretty much lines up with last week's news of Nvidia moving from Samsung to TSMC.   I'm sure Nvidia already cut a really big check to TSMC to get that production time locked in.  Although it will take some time, I think these are the signs of things pointing in the right direction.

Pretty much have given up on the 30 series.  Either no stock...or when in stock, marked up by at least 50%.  Not going to play that game.  As long as my 2080TI keeps performing...I am content, now.  Nvidia is blowing smoke...with no fire...

I am pretty much in the same boat with my RTX 2080 Black Edition which has proved itself as solid

Supposedly that's when the 40series will be out and the 7000series from AMD might come out a bit later. From what I read the Nvidia 4000series will be close to twice as powerful while the AMD 7000series will use 2chips and achieve almost 3times the performance... Again this is just from the rumors and leaks. Regardless you can't possibly flood the market with new cards at a decent MSRP right? Otherwise you just screw everyone... but that's just the retailers since Nvidia and AMD isn't seeing all that profit that they are getting so maybe I can get my hopes up. Instead of wasting like 800 to 1k Euros right now for a 3060ti at best... I'll wait and maybe get a 4070ti and have money to spare if they come out for like 600Euros MSRP which should be reasonable enough if not a bit inflated.

You may have to wait until Q3/2023 for the 4070Ti and with increased manufacturing and inflation costs, the MSRP price for the will probably be higher by at least 15% if not more.

I am figuring 2024 before supplies are back to normal

I meant to write Q3/2023, which would be close to NVIDIA's normal release cadence.  Of course the reality will probably be something else again.

I feel the same.  I'll keep running my 2080 Super until the 40 series comes out.  If the prices and availability goes like the 30 series has, I'll be hoping my 2080 hangs on.  I will never pay scalper prices.

Well I keep seeing leaks that they will be released in 2022 and since the 3070ti had an MSRP of 600$ and the 2070 super had an 499$ MSRP same as the 3070 so I am guessing that there wont be a huge increase in price otherwise people wont be buying much... plus if the market gets saturated with new GPUs the prices for the old ones will naturally have to fall. I mean EVGA is making sure gamers get cards at a decent price so I guess I still have a chance at getting a good card for a fair price... also there is intel with the ARC series that might ease at least some people with their cards. It's coming out soon, January I think.
