Nvidia RTX video card shortage causing aggressive crowds during restocks | Poc Network // Tech
 
It hasn’t gotten any easier to get your hands on one of the new Nvidia RTX cards due to the continuing demand for crypto mining and the overall video card and chip shortage that has been affecting the world. If you have been in the market for a new card anytime in the last few years, then you know quite well how difficult things have been, getting even worse of the last year alone. At times, you may never even get a chance to find a listing online marked as anything other than sold out. That, or you find heavily inflated pricing thanks to the evil souls looking to scalp video cards at much higher prices. Some prices about as evil as trying to sell water to a dehydrated baby in the desert. The RTX cards are the Tickle Me Elmos of the video card market.
 
The situation continues to look quite stale as Nvidia announces the new RTX 3080 Ti cards. Stock rolling into stores all around the country, and yet still, it’s close to impossible to get your hands on one due to aggressive crowds and speedy bots.
 
This is so true with no solution in sight. 

I mean, have you seen black friday videos? People literally die at these places. Now yes it's not like these cards are on sale, but releasing at msrp or anything close to msrp and being in stock when no other cards are leads to these crazy situations. Hopefully better days are to come in the near future.

People have lost their minds.  They have lost all sense of rational actions.  Howdid we get here?

(Caveat:  This is about a part of society and is not a generalization) 
 
A lot of this has to do with the insidious influence of "instant gratification" that has slowly permeated society as a whole over the last several decades. 
 
There is a segment of the population that believes, after being bombarded with the idea, i.e. advertising, peer pressure, etc., that unless they have "x" right now, regardless if they need, can afford, or want "x", then they are somehow inadequate.  To me, this is psychological reframing being used for another purpose.
 
Add to this is the idea that "If I want it, I want it now" regardless of the reality or consequences.  Look at the latest consumer debt, which in the US alone has grown to over $14 trillion.  Some expect that whatever they want should be available to them now and have never been told that they couldn't have it now.
 
Unfortunately, the current reality doesn't fit with the above.  My suspicion is that we will not see "normal" in the computer industry until well into 2023.  Believe me, I hope I am very wrong.
 
If the geopolitical world takes a wrong turn, then all bets are off.

At least USA has cards and retailers selling at MSRP.

i am sure the virtual coins is to blame here as well! 'cause the crypto fever is ruining everything !!
everyone wants to make money out of thin air (and yes i know banks do it since ... ever!! )
 
i so want this to "normalize"...  i truly hope by 2024 maybe 2025 everything is back to normal.

Its never gonna end been trying to get a card since they dropped but somehow scalpers can get a pallet amount of new ones... OK bud

That's the part that pisses me off the most. Seeing a card drop, going to ebay and seeing a scalper with like 5 cards in stock. How the f do they get so many in 1 day?

I can't imagine physically going to line up at a store for the chance at getting a card. Pretty much resigned to waiting on my evga queue stuff to come thru

Probably best just to wait this all out.  Take up another hobby that doesn't cost a whole lot of money.  I have started playing guitar again.

Watched this live because ofc there would be a hectic crowd like this. Its the managers fault for the running and shoving though because he forced them to stand in the parking lot instead of having them line up and have them just waiting patiently. Instead, he thought itd be a good idea to have a crowd of people stand in a parking lot and then flock to the store entrance when it was open, making gamers look like a bunch of rabid animals (not that we dont do that to ourselves lol)

also the problem is with places like Microcenter where managers know all the usual scalpers at their store and they continue selling to them with no limit. There needs to be like a 1 limit per customer.

this reminds me of apple releasing a new phone, i never thought i`ll end up like that.

Crypto prices are back up.  Silicon is still constrained.  Hard to see it getting better any time soon

that is not even the biggest reason we are where we are with GPUs today, mining was being done well before this shortage.

stop pretending like mining have nothing to do with it, GPU makers prefer to sell directly to miners in bulk simply to save money on distribution / transport

Corporate Greed. Nvidia could dump way more money into production, but refuse to. I know theirs wafer shortages... that's no excuse anymore though for not keeping up with demand when they keep making NEW CARDS.
