So the article states the following:

Concerns are mounting over the failure rate of Nvidia’s RTX 2080 Ti graphics card, with increasing numbers of reports of dead and dying cards from early adopters. Some display issues involve artifacting and instability immediately after being installed, while others begin to show signs of degradation after a few days, despite a lack of manual overclocking or voltage manipulation.

Nvidia’s recently released RTX Turing graphics cards are the most powerful consumer GPUs ever made and support exciting new gaming visual features like deep learning supersampling (DLSS) and ray tracing. The performance enhancement over the last generation isn’t as dramatic as first hoped, however, and inflated pricing has left some concerned about the real audience for such cards. Mere weeks after they became widely available, quality assurance concerns now join those earlier issues.

Threads have been cropping up on Nvidia’s forum about dead and dying RTX 2080 Ti cards for weeks now, with almost every thread filled with hundreds of comments highlighting crashes, black screens, blue screen of death issues, artifacts, and cards that fail to work entirely. There are some reports of issues with the 2080, too, but the majority reference problematic 2080 Ti cards.

Reddit threads with a similar theme have been appearing as well, detailing the RMA process that many users are now going through. Worse still, some users who have been issued a replacement card by Nvidia have then been forced to return that one too, suggesting that in some cases at least, the problem users are facing is not solved by simply giving them a new graphics card. That could hint at some sort of architectural defect.

The problems appear to primarily be affecting those with Founders Edition versions of the 2080 Ti, though some users with third-party cards from Gigabyte and Asus have also reported failures and problems with their new GPUs.
In response to a request for comment, Nvidia told Digital Trends that it was, “working with users individually but we are not seeing any broader issues.”

It is worth noting that failure numbers may be skewed by the fact that people who aren’t facing problems are unlikely to report back with similar zeal. However, the similar issues that appear to be arising for such large numbers of 2080 Ti owners is cause for concern.

Some users have been additionally disgruntled by what they claim is a demand that they pay for return shipping on their faulty graphics cards. Senior PR manager at Nvidia, Bryan Del Rizzo, denied this, telling Digital Trends: “All RMAs are sent a prepaid shipping label. That is a global process and has been the case for as long as I can remember.”

I normally don't post in here but I thought it would be interesting enough to share this.
I wonder if people here or EVGA themselves has noticed more than usual RMA's from these type of videocards.

And well, if you want to know my thoughts on this matter, it is always true there is more negative things posted than positive things online.
But it is rather suspicious that there is a sudden wave of complaining users with very serious issues.
I'm inclined to believe there may be a broader issue that affects quite some people, maybe videocards using a certain batch of bad components again that cause failure.
Or perhaps a driver issue killing videocards? We've seen that before with the 320.18 WHQL driver.

Not being an EE - can only speculate. I’d guess the ultra-high stock frequencies on ddr6 could be an issue.

Nvidia crammed a lot of tech on that one chip. May have been better to split the silicon up into 2 seperate chips on a single pcb. One for cuda, the other all the rest.

I used to mine. Now I compute.

We live in a world where everything is quickly blown out of proportion. This could be a big deal, but it also could be nothing at all.

I look forward to seeing if any real news comes out of this.

Sounds like Nvidia might have a PCB design / layout / component issue if there reference in-house 2080 series cards are the majority of the reported failures. This is why EVGA gives me peace if mind if there is a failure.

I'm betting they are waiting for 7nm to drop that and sweet Jesus will it ever be expensive.

Probably a case of confirmation bias when it comes to reports. The issue with RTX is it's first generation, not that it's hardware failing more than previous generations. RTX won't be viable until it has a generation where DXR has matured and can maintain at least 60 fps minimum in RTX titles. That is currently beyond the horizon as DXR has almost no adoption rate right now. This is not surprising as DXR adaption rate will most likely mirror DX12 adoption rate in both devs and the consumer market based on historical data since 2015. Got to build the features into a few generations before it has a viable rate of adoption. Both adoption rate of DX12 and DisplayPort come to mind as previous indicators of how RTX might gain traction in the consumer market based on similar paradigms.

Sorry to revive this thread a little, but Nvidia has released a statement regarding this issue:
    https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/1079930/geforce-rtx-20-series/rtx-2080-ti-founders-edition-contact-us/

Limited test escapes from early boards caused the issues some customers have experienced with RTX 2080 Ti Founders Edition.

We stand ready to help any customers who are experiencing problems.

Please visit http://www.nvidia.com/support to chat live with the NVIDIA tech support team (or to send us an email) and we’ll take care of it.

Basically what this means, some videocards have received faulty or not correctly working PCB components like resistors and capacitators that haven't been detected/removed by the previous testing teams quality control rounds and this caused trouble for end users.

It may be why EVGA for example is not seeing higher than usual return rates because they are possibly using different batches of components, but I don't know if this is factual.

The speculations of faulty video memory being used are likely not the case, some users seem to report new batches with Samsung memory instead of Micron but that is very likely just Nvidia adapting based on the supply chain instead of fixing problems.

Managed to snag an XC Ultra this morning, though I wanted the FTW3 but I can't see that happening for a while in Canada. Hopefully my card doesn't fail, but I do know EVGA has a great RMA process.

Edit: Actually found a 2080 ti FTW3 on this site after my XC ultra shipped, was lucky enough to get one. I'll probably return the XC ultra when it comes in or see if my friends were looking for one.
