Nvidia Mulls Restarting Cryptomining GPU Production | Tom's Hardware

Nvidia is thinking about beginning production of crypto-mining specific Ampere graphics cards that come without display outputs, but first, it needs to find out whether there's enough mining demand for the latest graphics processors.

"If crypto demand begins or if we see a meaningful amount, we can also use that opportunity to restart the CMP [mining-specific GPUs] product line to address ongoing mining demand," said Colette Kress, chief financial officer at Nvidia, at the 19th Annual J.P. Morgan Tech/Auto Forum Conference (via SeekingAlpha).

Demand for gaming graphics cards, high-performance processors, and game consoles has exceeded supply for months as people spend more time at home and entertain themselves playing the latest game titles. Cryptocurrency valuations have skyrocketed recently, reactivating miners who rushed to get graphics cards, further increasing demand for GPUs. Nvidia has had a hard time understanding how demand from cryptominers affects its current sales, but it is mulling restarting the production of mining-specific graphics cards.
"We don't have visibility on how much of the GeForce RTX 30-series end demand comes from mining," said Kress. "So, we don't believe it's a big part of our business today. Gaming demand is very strong, and we think that's larger than our current supply."
It doesn't always make a lot of sense to mine Bitcoins using Nvidia's latest GPUs, which tend to be pretty expensive. There are special accelerators designed for Bitcoin mining, and those ASICs tend to be considerably more efficient than graphics processors. In contrast, GPUs are used to mine Ethereum, which has been gaining price in recent weeks, just like Bitcoin.

Since demand for Nvidia's products has generally been high in recent months, it isn't easy for Nvidia to understand how significantly cryptominers affect this demand, especially keeping in mind the fact that select makers of graphics boards have mined cryptocurrency at their own facilities before releasing these cards to the market.

It is beneficial for Nvidia to clearly understand how many of its GPUs are needed by cryptominers. Since miners only need compute capabilities of a GPU, they do not need display outputs, and they do not care if the GPU they use comes with disabled texture mapping units or lacks video processing capabilities. As a result, Nvidia can sell them graphics processors that would otherwise go to waste. Those come in the form of the aforementioned CMP GPUs.

Personally I think NVIDIA should sell mining cards from GPUs that would otherwise be thrown away.

In a way it makes sense but I fear it's currently cryptomining is currently in a bubble that will burst. The fact that Bitcoin was only $13.5K in November and now in middle of January is almost $40K is a big sign of a bubble. The problem for NVIDIA is that they don't have the market right now and are looking at what would be months down the line which if it continues to climb that is great but if it pops they could be out a lot for cards that nobody wants.

How so? The idea is to sell mining graphics cards that did not pass quality control for consumers to the miners.

..because according to the reports - if we are to believe them - everyone is just so stressed in production that they can't get the current line ups made in a timely manner , so adding even more products to make/change/ package/  etc  .. will delay all of it ..what another 6 months ?..  NO THANKS  ....
..And for what ? Miners !?! .. so by that time it all gets done  , in such a completely volatile segment  ,  it could all be in the toilet by then ....Why take that risk ?  Why add another bit of uncertainty ?, to what they claim is already just so horrible for them to complete the current  items....

For me it's a hard pass.  For a business claiming hardships, should also be a non-starter  .

    Gotta agree with STEVE here.

If production yields weren't so  then by all means; go ahead. But TSMC is booked solid for 7 & 5 nm production; so they're stuck with Samsung who can't even get their current products out the door with any sort of regularity due to lithography & yield issues.

well sapphire put out a Mining rig this week

SAPPHIRE announces new mining rig in partnership with Cudo

Shipping with CudoOS mining software pre-installed, the INCA EP-10 is built on a 55W AMD EPYC Embedded 3251 processor and is designed to ‘enable cryptomining farms to deploy a plug-and-play mining solution with ease and scale.’ There’s a total of ten PCIe x16 slots, each running 8x PCIe 3.0 lanes, while four RDIMM slots provide up to 512GB memory. As a 4U rackmountable system, the INCA EP-10 measures 750 x 438 x 175 mm and uses two 1600W PSUs, while it’s possible to install two more for redundancy.

I am hopeful that this would help the industry, having discrete products for each segment of the market... But I also agree that at this point with the supply line maxed out for current card production this is just going to stress the market further. I will say that down the road I believe this will help with supply vs demand for gaming specific hardware.

    Current Build:
    Ryzen 9 3900XT
    Arctic 420mm AIO
    MSI MEG x570 ACE
    32 GB Trident Z Neo CL16 3600mhz DDR4
    EVGA GTX 980 ACX 2.0
Sabrent Rocket NVMe PCI 4.0 1TB
    EVGA Supernova G2 850 Gold
    Thermaltake Level 20 XT

    Best quote I've ever heard:
Music has always been a matter of energy to me, a question of fuel. Sentimental people call it inspiration, but what they really mean is fuel. I have always needed fuel. I am a serious consumer. On some nights I still believe that a car with the gas needle on empty can run about fifty more miles if you have the right music very loud on the radio.

It takes >3 months from the day a wafer enters the fab to the day it exits the fab as a CPU/GPU, so that's a long lead up time in the world of crypto-mining. It could pop tomorrow, a week, or six months... but it's guaranteed to pop again eventually. And come back even, eventually. Humans love speculative markets and there's no shortage of history to prove it or the cyclical nature of them. Any GPUs made to be dedicated miners would come out of regular GPU wafer supplies at this point, it doesn't matter if they come with video-out logic or not. I'd be curious to know how much die savings removing the video-logic would even offer, can't be that much...

Cards already exist with no graphics such as some Quadro cards which are sold for various professional needs.

Annndd.... dont forget that miners dont really want cards like this anyway cause they cant buy them, run them and then resell them for anything. They want gamer cards to sell back to that market and make most of it back when the bottom falls out of mining, which its about due.

It's a dumb idea and even the first time Nvidia tried it, it was a flop for miners. Nvidia doesn't discount the cards enough to make it even worth considering buying it.
