Has anyone tried to use the Nu card on a pc running a Linux OS?
Is a Linux driver to be expected?

Currently, Linux is not supported, nor am I aware of any current plans to introduce Linux support at this time.

I have the Nu audio card running under Linux (Mint mate 19.1).  No configuration.  The card does need the 3.3vdc active on the SATA power connector or it won't work.  The gain for PCM audio is very low, the gain for DSD seems to be normal (DoP data transfer).  I need more gain for PCM audio, so I am probably missing Nu Audio card volume control that a specialized driver might provide.

I've also heard that some people have gotten the base functions of the card to work under Mac and Linux.  However, as you noted, some features are likely missing without the driver installed.
