https://www.pcmag.com/news/newegg-ships-rtx-3080-cards-without-retail-packaging-and-they-are-arriving Nvidia's RTX 3080 graphics cards are understandably very popular, to the point where Nvidia has had to take action to stop bots buying up stock to resell. However, Newegg is also causing buyers a lot of frustration by shipping cards without the all-important protective retail packaging, and they are inevitably arriving damaged. As Tom's Hardware reports, Newegg is selling EVGA's RTX 3080 cards, but shipping some of them to customers without any retail packaging. What arrives is the card in a plastic bag, and as Reddit posts are confirming, the cards are unsurprisingly being damaged in transit. Why would Newegg do this? It seems demand has resulted in stock being grabbed from everywhere possible, including bulk card lots. An EVGA product manager called Jason responded to one of the Reddit threads and explained, "A very (very) small number of cards looks[sic] to have been shipped from Newegg as bulk. They are aware so please contact them and they will help you out." So these cards never had retail packaging, but such is the demand, Newegg sold them. The real failure here is not taking the time to protect the card properly or informing customers they were buying a loose card. Usually, bulk stock is used by system builders rendering retail packaging unnecessary and wasteful. The main damage being caused is to the end plate where the ports sit. It's possible to bend that plate back, assuming it hasn't bent far enough to damage components on the card or push the ports out of alignment, but this isn't something you really want to have to deal with on a brand new card that costs over $700. Looks like Newegg needs to rethink this strategy in my opinion.

I know some people figured out they could “build” a computer and basically reserve a card, so I am wondering if these users may have run into that situation where someone reserved a bulk item card, and that caused the terrible experience.

People still shop at NewEgg? Ever since they started letting 3rd party vendors on their site it has been a steady downhill experience for me. At this point I only purchase from them if their are no other options.

Newegg has turned into a really shady web computer company. Reminds me of Circuit City back in the day.

Not to mention there return policy sucks. Also shady price matching on purchased items need to be caught within a small window and does not matter if it happens within the time just that you caught it before the window.

I question if NewEgg was purchased by another company at some point in the past or if it changed owners... They used to be like the go to place for purchasing any and everything computer related, but even purchasing simple items like hard drives turned into a challenge.

Yes, they were majority bought out in 2016 by a Chinese company . https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Newegg In 2016, Liaison Interactive (SZSE: 002280), a Chinese technology company, acquired a majority stake in Newegg in an investment deal

Ever since that buy out took place I stopped buying from them quite a bit. Still do here & there, but only items sold & shipped by them. No 3rd party sellers.

I would much rather receive no packaging and a damaged product than going through the 40 hours of refreshing and desperately attempting to buy, At least if it's damaged you're ENTITLED to a new product.

What if I said that one's entire life had been decided by fate? That every single one of your actions, from the minute to the monumental, stemmed not from your own choices, but had already been decided upon? That life being a journey of limitless possibilities was but an illusion, and no matter how fiercely man struggled, he stood at the mercy of a long-established path? The wealthy shall know their riches. The needy shall starve on the streets. The wicked shall be wicked, the righteous just. The beautiful, the hideous, the strong, the frail, the fortunate, the miserable... and finally, the victors and the defeated. What if I said that all such things had been carved into stone eons ago, allowing for no divergence? If so, sinners have nothing to answer for, nor do saints have any true virtue to their name. What if I said that not a single action is carried out of one's own volition, but had been decided long ago? That we are merely adrift in the current of time? Tell me, would yo

Newegg has been shady for a long time, I think they are under different ownership than back in the day. Sad when silly stuff like this ruins perfectly good cards though.

Yeah, I saw that too... so funny. Newegg can't be bothered to properly package ultra-rare expensive GPUs and PCMag can't bother to double-check an email before printing...

NewEgg is a public company listed in ShenZhen in China. I have them on a watch list and their stock has tumbled down to < 2 yuan a share which is pink sheet territory. Lately they have been on a buy back to prop up the market. Sure NewEgg has made some mistakes but they are slowly learning. Rome was not built in a day.

That's correct and has been going downhill since imo. Used to be my one stop shop but not anymore. I might grab a few things from them (Sold and Shipped by Newegg) once in a blue moon but I mainly shop at Amazon. I just wish these places got rid of the scalping platforms but too much money would be lost if they did.

Most stuff i get from China is well wrapped with bubble wrap. Postal services are brutal at the best of times. I bought some parts for cable management and the packaging weighted more then the cables

I have bought lots of hard disks and they are very heavily wrapped. Placed in a small box then that carefully packed in a larger box. AFAIK NewEgg shipping can handle even a bare hard disk. So the claim of badly packaged is suspicious.

No it's not. A naked GPU has enough mass and sharp corners that it will easily poke through bubblewrap, it's the entire reason the thing is supposed to be in a box. I've also received OEM drives from Newegg that only had the outside shipping box and were shipped burrito-wrapped in bubble wrap. If the wrap is in the wrong direction the card can just slide right out. This is the reason Newegg uses packaging tape on both ends of the burrito/bubble wrap. Ages ago I bought a new motherboard from Newegg. It was in the standard motherboard box, which itself was in a box of peanuts. UPS dropped the package at some point, because I opened the motherboard box to find out the very corner of the motherboard had slammed so hard into the side of its box to not only poke a hole through the inside of the mainboard box but also crack the PCB. The corner of the motherboard was literally bent at a 45-degree angle and partially broken. In hindsight I'm surprised they didn't try to contest the return as user damage, but this was long before they were bought out by a Chinese conglomerate.
