I just ordered a new Dark from Amazon, is it necessary to flash BIOS before installing gen 2 core processor (9940x)? Or will it work with factory BIOS?
Thanks

If the board has bios version 1.12 already installed then you won't need to flash it.

But *SKX-Refresh CPUs are supported with earlier BIOS versions, but recommended to update to 1.12 for best stability/overclock potential You should Test the CMOS Batter Before you install the Motherboard as you will need to remove the Motherboard if your battery is DOA. Also Before you install an OS you should update to Bios 1.18 5-31-2019 BIOS 1.18 151-SX-E299 Windows 10 64bit DownloadViewAlso on your First Power Up your Motherboard may take 4 to 8 minutes and 2 or 3 restarts to train the Memory, the more Memory the Longer. Driver Version: 1.18 Release Date: 5/31/2019 Driver File: Download BIOS 1.18 Updates - Fix Optane device error when trying to build with data disk
- Improve memory compatibility for i7-7800X processors
- Update CPU microcode
Driver Version: 1.12 Release Date: 10/26/2018 Driver File: Download BIOS 1.12 Updates - Improves CPU overclocking ability for SKX-Refresh CPU

Bios will be first thing I do. As long as I can boot into bios with the 9940x - I will definitely flash per the utility. Would be a hassle to have to boot into bios using 7820 then change out processors. I have an x299 bios on one of my thumb drives from last year. Easy enough to update on laptop and then flash. The SM simply gave up the ghost at the first sign of the 9940 - never to see the light of day again. My existing Dark worked with it just fine.

You now update the Bios from within the Bios and NOT the OS or DOS Flash Drive, the Old School way.

The motherboard should still post but the CPU will not be displayed correct in BIOS. Happened to me when going from the 7800x to the 9820x. If the motherboard does not post out of the box, contact our support team and we can help you with a BIOS chip so that you can get up and running ASAP.

Yup, Right outta box. I believe it was v1.03...??? It appeared to be a release stock bios. Booted up, got me where I needed to go then easily flashed in bios to E299_flashtool_118 1E299118.bin Once I got in - went straight to the boot tab and flashed it from a thumb drive... (which I had to format to FAT32 then copy file into from laptop... ) All good

Second gen core processor was Intel Sandy Bridge from 2009 to 2011. I am so confused how a 9th generation core processor could be considered 2nd generation.
ASRock Z77 • Intel Core i7 3770K • EVGA GTX 1080 • Samsung 850 Pro • Seasonic PRIME 600W Titanium My EVGA Score: 1546 • Zero Associates Points • I don't shill
