I bought a new monitor as describe in the Subject of this post. I am using a regular HDMI cable running from my video card TO my monitor, and its only letting me run at 60 hz... The ports i have available on this monitor are. DVI, and HDMI, thats it NOT DISPLAY port. Why cant i run at 144 hz with HDMI and what must i do? buy a DVI cable or, Is their an adaptor that goes from HDMI to DISPLAY port because i have a "Premium Display Port Cable" my video card DOES support it but my monitor DOES not have the port. What are my best options? I have a 1080

Better performance, no. Smoother game play, yes, maybe, no. It's all on the persons eyes, and no two people see anything the same.

It will be smoother, however you need to match your FPS to the monitor refresh rate. I have a similar variation of your monitor, still 1080p 144hz 1ms all that jazz ASUS touts around, however with no G-Sync support. You are going to need raw horsepower to match the refresh rate. Now this will mostly only benefit you in FPS games, other game types, rts, rpg, mmo, moba, etc. really wont make you better, just a nicer visual experience since high refresh rate equals better personal twitch reaction response time, so this solely resides on your physical talents.

Make sure you use a dual link DVI-D cable. The VG278HE should have come with one in the box.

^^ This. I am fortunately blessed with quick reaction and it made a measurable positive increase in my gaming experience. I run three 144hz monitors... I am planning on going to a single 34" 4k this year.

i7 7700k@4.5 (just delidded last night to get to 4.9 no info yet), 3200mHzCAS14 32GB, 1070 FTW@2050mHz (soon a 1080) nVMe, SSD, with a monitor 1440p that has gsync/144-165hz I get ~50 to 70 frames in the custom settings near Very High 1440p - most of the bloat fluff turned off like flare, rays, etc. Did keep the grass upgrade as it looks nice in game to see foot trails. The 1080 should push me up a bit, will have to see. In benchmark it states CPU usage average is around 55% on nearly every bench I have ran. Edit: added info on CPU usage.
