Very excited.  by my calculation, this will get me up to about 170fps from 155fps in BF4   Going to try to get it done in the next week or two.  Everyone is still doing RGB but I'm still an all black stealth build kind of guy.  this build is going to kick some major butt.

  • 3090 KPE hydrocopper
  • 12900K
  • gskill 6600 ddr5
  • z690 kingpin
  • EK quantum magnitude CPU block black/acetel
  • EVGA 1600 platinum
  • noctuas galore
  • EPDM soft tube / EK fittings... black :)

Only thing left to pick is the case, pump and radiators.  The case kind of drives the radiator selections.  Ideally, I'd like a tiny case with external rads.  maybe even a dual loop.  But It looks like there just arent a lot of case options to fit the Z690 board.  unless I go completely open test bench.  Seems like the possibilities are O11XL, Define 7 XL, Enthoo Pro, 7000D, 1000D

I am leaning towards the Fractal Define 7 XL or the Enthoo.  With how big these mbs are, there really just arent a lot of options.  I kind of want to get the case and test fit the board before I buy rads so I can measure the exact head room this go around.  rather than end up with a more for the parts bin.

Definitely open to thoughts and suggestions.  Pics coming once I get all the goodies.

    Thanks Chaos, will do.

Might have to settle for lesser ram.  I ordered Trident Z5 6600 on amazon but now they say it wont be delivered until October :(  Got a lesser ddr5 Trident Z5 6000 kit in stock from newegg in the mean time so this build isnt just sitting.  This is the one I wanted..

If anyone knows where to grab that elsewhere, please let me know.  Amazon shows it as "ships from amazon" but its not actually in stock... doesn't seem like anyone has the matte black RGB .  I'd prefer the non-RGB but that only comes in 6400

Also.. went with the Define 7 XL.  Maybe I'll do a dual loop... decisions decisions :)

Dude, if you're going after a Define XL, you can stuff a 480mm Rad into the top OR front of the thing.
Stick a 420mm in there with three nice Noctua 140mms and call it a done deal.
If that's not QUITE enough rad space for you, stick a 280 up front.
Sticking with 140mm-multiuple setups gives you maximum airflow and surface area, as well as lower overall noise and fewer fans.

Note: Common wisdom is 2x120mm per device being cooled on your loop.
For CPU + GPU, you're looking at 480mm.   A 480mm rad works out to 57,600 square mm.

However, a 420mm rad works out to 58,800 square mm.
So it'll work roughly the same as a 480mm for your requirements.

Last year, I had a big chunk of my build budget slashed by some unexpected bills.
So I wound up going with a 420mm Alphacool AIO setup instead.
Not as spiffy as the hard tube setup I was planning.  But was a fraction of the price.

And as I mentioned, whatever you wind up doing, dump default fans in the system for Noctuas.
If you hate the doo doo brown, go with the Reduxes.

definitely going with the reduxes.  I am pretty disappointed to see that the EKWB rads are now white/black two tone only instead of just black  (https://www.performance-pcs.com/water-cooling/radiators/ek-quantum-surface-s480-black.html).  Has anyone seen these rads in person?  or is that an RGB surface?  if so, any recommendations on what plain black 480 rad is the best right now?  480 on top is ideal because it will give the RAM and VRM more clearance but not opposed to 420.. just need to test fit once the ram is here to decide.

I did get my case, the define 7 XL.  The Gskill 6600 ddr5 actually worked out.  Its on the way.  The lesser kit can be returned so thats good.  really just need fans, fittings and a rad to get this show on the road.   I have a spare TBE 150 pump/res.  I kind of want to get the FLT 240.

Wish I had time to do this earlier this summer, hate to have parts just sitting around waiting.  next weekend!

Looks like I can fit a coolstream 240 in push pull in the bottom intake

If I get a slim 480 for the top, i should be able to do push pull there.  I'd rather get the 420 for the top but it looks like the EK coolstreams are discontinued and all thats left is marked up 480s

Ugh, I'm returning this case.  top frame is damaged and bent pretty badly.  that just doesnt fly for $270.  i guess newegg really is that bad these days.  clearly they sent out a dinged RMA for NIB

all good, thank you.  just a hiccup.  i have a test bench I can warm this bad boy up on :P

I am thinking about calling Fractal to ask for replacement parts rather than dealing with newegg.  The main frame is actually OK.  But the top removable frame is bent from the box being dropped and some little stuff is missing.  the bottom filter clip tolerances don't retain the filter properly either.  there just arent a ton of cases that can hold the z690 dark though and I don't like the 5 1/4 drive bay slot showing on the front.

    Re: New Z690 / 3090 KPE / EK build coming!! 2022/08/26 05:51:38 (permalink)
Couple of pics and an update.  Everyone knows this but me but the mark of a good loop is the ability to drain and break it down without fidgeting and titling for 3 hours.  My old layout looked good but was very hard to maintain.  It took me every bit of 3 hours to break it down my old Z590 loop.  It was just very tight, everything has to be ratcheted centimeter by centimeter until you can take the top frame off.  The FLT120 looks cool and saves space but its MUCH harder to work with. I bled the new loop with the D5 150ml pump/res in about 3 minutes.  With the FLT, it takes easily an hour because there is just no good way to tilt and fill.  Its just a lot of extra work.  anyway..

I wanted to plug up the 3090 KPE directly but the MPC BPC doesnt allow enough clearance so it continues to be vert mounted.  Also, the Z690 KP has no onboard HDMI/DP.  So if you're building, don't buy the 12900K, its a waste of money.  I didn't realize it until I started plugging stuff in hah.  The 6600 XMP3 Gskill blades posted right away with no problem.  I haven't started messing with CPU overclocks yet.  The most pressing matter is figuring out how to turn the RAM LEDs off.. :P

Lastly.. I bought a MORA3 420 Pro but its going to be a few weeks.  After the newegg sent me a damaged case and I started mathing out all of the new bits more carefully... it just doesn't make any sense at all.  Existing case can fit the board.  More rads would have cost me another $300-400 plus the case at $300 +/-... so $700 on rads and enclosure.  It makes a lot of "sense" to go nuts on a push pull MORA at that point seemingly.

Using a couple of EK 360 external rads for now sitting on top of the case for now.  Its so much easier to work in a case when you get rid of all the radiators LOL

and we are now RGB free :)

cleaned up the wire runs a bit.  I really love this TBE 200 pump and bracket.  I attached the pump to the pump bracket with dampeners and then attached the bracket to the case with dampeners.  The FLT120 D5 was significantly louder, probably from being just exposed and on a rail frame.

More to come once I get the MORA.  Going to clean up the soft tubes, PSU cabling, do QDC's on a passthrough in the PCI slot, second pump when it arrives.

I really really like watercool products.  The MORA is big but it sure seems like there isnt a better value out there in ambient water cooling.  I wish they made a black heatkiller block.

Very nice piece of hardware.  good tolerances, feels very premium.  Fins arent perfect but no complaints, very minor imperfects. pump and rad are leak tested.  I'm tempted to plug her up tonight but I need to make room on my desk first :P

Got a 1.5" cable sleeve to cover up the loose wiring and extra molex cables.  Nice and pretty now :P

Ambient temp was 76F or ~24.5C when performed.  Average GPU temp 47C and 48C   So delta T is about (lol typo'd 13 at first)  23.  Thats pretty good for the HC block.  I never got much better than that and I have a M5works BC cooler.. so yeah.  But then only a 1.5C - 2.5C increase when the OC of +1000mem / +100 core / +121 power is applied.  it is super tempting to load the XOC bios and classified tool and see what I can really get but I really don't want to draw straws and blow up my KP card. and even then, I'm not sure if you'd want to daily drive an overclock like that even if you have the cooling performance.  Anyway

Gushing more about the MO-RA... the benefit of the MO-RA is kind of two fold.  First there is the extreme amount of rad surface area on push pull with 200mm fans.  Beasting it right there for sure.  But then there is additional benefit from getting all of the rads and obstructions out of the case.  That is a dramatic improvement to airflow and cooling.  The entire case is just cool to the touch now.  The case has seven 140s and one 120mm fan.  Four of the 140s are exhaust, three 140s are intake and one 120 is intake.

MO-RA 420 in push pull 200mm is possibly the ultimate of off the shelf ambient consumer cooling.  I love it.  This thing can run the heck out of excel

This is a similar idea to what I was envisioning with this thread. I was trying to figure out how to keep the desk-footprint small with the case that just needs a bit of airflow for VRMs and whatnot while moving all the actually power cooling to an adjacent MO-RA. I love those things. Even the one I have at work with 18-140mm fans is extremely quiet. I threw ~600W of heat into it and the water temperature went up a couple degrees (so did the ambient temp in the room after a while lol). I was also considering the 200mm's for home use.

Anyway, great job! It looks sweet.

thank you stopping by and for taking a look!  that is exactly what I was going for too.  keep the case footprint as small as possible and make the cooling modular.

I almost did the 9x2 140mm but 200mm is just a much better value.  each 200mm 1200rpm Noctua fan is <$30 direct from germany.  so you're buying 10 less fans at $30 a pop plus the 200mm moves much more air more quietly, even tho the max RPM is 1200 vs 1500 .  So "save" $300 by going with 200mm fans and be a bit quieter .  the choice is clear :P

    Re: New Z690 / 3090 KPE / EK build coming!! 2022/09/10 12:10:45 (permalink)
Got my EVGA 1600w PP RMA and installed today.. the 12v rail is actually worse than the original and the Eco mode fan is more frequent.  This one seems to kick on at ~5m instead of ~10m.  Major bummer, I guess its just how it is with these PSUs.  I suppose I'm going to keep the original and send the RMA back but have to follow up with them.  Kinda sucks the wind out of a zero-noise-at-idle goal.  Oh well.  Took the opportunity to really clean up the cabling as I installed that.  Saw that my bottom 140 intake fan was actually exhaust by accident.  Broke a fin trying to get it out.  I dont have any spare 140mm Noctuas.. so I put a Phanteks 140mm pwm there instead and yes its in the right direction this time LOL.

Now can we talk about something?  The Noctua fan cable connection on the chromax fans SUCKS.  I really just don't understand why they decided to use that little cable nub instead a longer cable with an extension like they used to be.  Its a total pain  to reattach them if they come loose by accident.  Anyway.

Put the 120mm in the bottom intake.  Unfortunately, the PSU's 2nd peripheral plug interferes is on the bottom row of the PSU and interferes with getting a 2nd 120mm on the bottom.  What I really should do is get a molex extension and run both pumps on the same Periph plug.. but no big deal for now.  If I remember i'll order a molex extension later.  Its good enough and a 2nd fan down there would just be blowing onto the top of the PSU channel frame anyway.  I stuffed all the cables into that cavity, got rid of the extra PWM cable extensions from the old build that I left due to not knowing how exactly I'd feed everything... and the 120 is centered under the case pump.  About as good as its going to get.

For whatever reason, my EK D5 stopped reporting RPMs and PWM is not working correctly.  I opened a ticket with them and am waiting for feedback.  The pump does kick to full speed with just molex connected.  It doesn't report RPMs no matter the combination or mb header it is plugged into.  Ultimately, I would like to have the pumps running at the same speed RPMs with the same flow.  I'll have to break down the loop once that is sorted.

I ordered an Aqua computer 6 XT controller and a flow meter.  Once I collect all of my bits, we shall see whats next.

Get one of those room AC's on wheels. Make a box for your radiator setup to set in, crank that AC as low as it will go in that box and bench. Desperate times call for desperate measures lol

Get one of those room AC's on wheels. Make a box for your radiator setup to set in, crank that AC as low as it will go in that box and bench. Desperate times call for desperate measures lol

Lol, The result would probably be pretty wild

I moved the e-cores up to 3900 evenly.  Not quite sure how people are getting TS in the 23k range.  I managed to eek out a 22114 just now .. ambient 75F.  and then 22302.  pretty good but im not sure how i am getting to 23k at ambient
