Re: New Z390 Build upcoming - some questions? 2019/01/16 02:01:02 (permalink)
So I have this bundle of wires coming out of the front of my EVGA DG87 Case.
I know from the booklet that rod is a case ambient temp sensor.
But I have no idea what those other plugs might be for as they do not look familiar to me, and I do not see anything referencing them in the manual.

Any ideas what these might be gang?

Looks like connectors for the front panel:

- USB 3
- USB 2
- Audio

Well I think "finally" I have everything hooked up needed to boot for the first time.
Little nervous, just hope I got everything in and hooked up properly. I will soon find out.
Going to take a break for a few and then go over everything again very carefully before hitting that switch for the first time.

Hey gang she booted just fine the first time! Woohoo!
I have it in another room on a table, made sure all is well and that I could boot from my Windows 10 install media on flash drive, all looking good!

Now to get it out here in my office and hooked to internet  and set up for going forward!

Many many thanks again for everyone's help during this process. Pressing that power button the first time was especially nerve racking on me this time, but she did just fine!
Shutting the good ole X79 Dark down now for the last time. I will always have fond memories of this board.
I am sure I will be back in a while with more questions.

I'm back. Windows 10 is installed and Motherboard chipset drivers installed.
Now on to install more stuff - lots to do. May take a break for a bit though, am kind of fried.

It should be reporting the hottest core

Whilst I continue to get things sorted, just wanted to compliment EVGA also on this DG87 case.
Love how the windowed side is actually the front of the PC, and all the cables for the I/O route in to plug into the motherboard from the rear left corner of the back of the case, well hidden.

Also really like the connectors on the front of the case, makes life very easy. I especially will make good use of the HDMI port on front of case to plug my Rift into whilst using, and then just unplug and put away whilst not using.
Obviously it was with VR in mind that they put that there.
Very nice feature!

Thanks much, everything still working great.

Getting the rest of my software installed, hopefully before too long I can start to push this 9900k a little.

Last chip I overclocked was the i7 4820k on the X79 board, seems to be a lot of newer things to take into account on the newer technology boards.
Hoping EVGA gets an overclocking guide up on this puppy.

Man I gotta say unless I am missing something this G Skill software is crap.
I have Trident Z RGB ram in this new build, and all I wanted to do was change the LED to a solid blue.
No can do, turns blue out toward an end but different colors through the rest of the stick.
Anyone else running this ram and try changing the LED for it on the Dark?

I'll take some screenshots when I get home to better show this, but each g.skill stick has 5 RGB leds across the stick and the software allows you to control individually. They're labeled something like DIMM_X_Y where X is the given stick of ram and Y is the given LED, so for example DIMM_1_4, meaning stick 1's 4th LED.

Ok thanks much for the info, I will also have another look in a bit.
Would love to just get them solid blue like my other lights.

Thanks much!
I am extremely pleased! I was so cautious and careful putting this thing together. I do not have the vision or the mind I once had due to some health issues that struck me, so this was first build since that happened. I was literally terrified when I went to start this thing up - spent almost two days putting her together and was really afraid it would not boot - but it did.

I will give an example though - this one was embarrassing. So after getting the build done on my work table and looking it over very carefully several times, I went to start it up for the first time. Nothing , nada. So I tried the power button on the board itself, voila she booted! So figured I had the wires crossed on the pins that control the buttons on the case. Changed polarity on the power wire that connects to the board, still nothing. Spent over half an hour trying to figure that one out.

Then - got to looking, saw another button down toward bottom front of case - pressed it and boom she started right up!
All that time all because I was pressing the wrong dang button LOL.

Well in any event, I could not be happier!!

Thanks so much!
The info you provided above got me steered in right direction, I now have static blue which was what I was wanting.

Thanks again, really appreciate it! I guess GSkill software not as bad as I thought LOL.

No you're definitely right overall, the UX for controlling the individual LEDs is not super intuitive. I also really dislike how you can't set RGB values, only dragging the selector across the color circle.
