Dumb question:
Can someone clue me in on app where on the Dark MB those two M2 110mm slots are? Trying to see in the pic of the board. Just trying to understand better. I assume these would be the ones I would use for my M2 drive or drives.

Opinion:
Samsung Pro or Evo for these drives?

In between the top two PCIE ports

I'm getting the Evo for my new build. The Pro has better speeds on paper, but i doubt you're going to see any actual real world differences. At least not enough to justify the price hike.

EVO on my end as well

I really like how they have done this with the MB Power and EPS Connectors.

At first look I thought they Dropped the EPS Connectors not being on top of the MB next the VRM.
But then the VRM is also not above the CPU on the top part of the MB but to the Left of a Rotated CPU Socket to boot.

Thanks much guys, EVO it will be.

And just to clarify once again, I should have no issues running two m2 Nvme's?

I do wonder why you guys advice to go NVME's for a gaming build.. Game load times on a much cheaper regular SSD is only a second slower at worst. I can get about twice the storage for the same price, and waiting 17 seconds instead of 16 for a level I can't play before everyone else joins anyway is no problem.

Also, maybe save a bit of cash and go for a 8700K.. Or at least wait until reviews on the 9900k :).. With your GPU you should be playing at resolutions where the cpu has close to zero impact.

Just my 2 cents..

Certainly something to think about on the SSD's. But am going to stick with the 9900k I have on pre-order.
I might even consider a m2 Nvme for my C drive (OS and apps) and throw in a SATA SSD for my games.

It is not about Games or Gaming but the OS Windows 10.
Only For the M.2 Slots do they need be NVME SSD Drives.
So if you want to use the M.2 Slots then you need NVME Type Drives.
Not using the M.2 Slots then it makes no difference.
But then also you will have to run Legacy Mode for your Storage a setting in the Bios under CSM and then this requires CSM to be Enabled.
In some system setup that is, for Windows 10 you want CSM Disabled to be 100% UEFI.
But if you want Full UEFI for your OS then you will need to use the M.2 Port with at lest One Drive for the OS to Boot.
Windows 10 for the most part can only see and use NVME Type Drives in the M.2 Slots on EVGA Motherboards.

Yes you will be fine.
The Top one will disable the U.2 Port
The Bottom one will disable the PE3 Slot.

I am leaning more and more to just getting one m2 Nvme SSD to put the OS and apps on, and one larger SATA SSD to put all my games on.

Is there really much benefit to the m2 Nvme for having games on other that a little decrease in loading times?

You could use the Lower M.2 Slot for the OS and use the U.2 Port for the fastest SSD on the Market.
Remember to Disable the M.2 Ports that you are not going to use and do this before you install an OS.
If you are going to use Used Drives make sure you use Diskpart and Clean them before you install the OS.
Just Kidding the U.2 Drive Cost out of this world, Link Over $600 for a 480GB Drive, Cable Cost Extra.
I just go with a 512GB NVME Drive for the OS and a single Samsung 860 EVO 1TB 2.5 Inch SATA III Internal SSD (MZ-76E1T0B/AM) or Crucial MX500 1TB 3D NAND SATA 2.5 Inch Internal SSD - CT1000MX500SSD1(Z) For Games that need a Fast SSD Drive.
Seagate 4TB Barracuda SATA 6Gb/s 256MB Cache 3.5-Inch Internal Hard Drive (ST4000DM004) or 6TB For Big Data & Photos.
Could also go with two Barracuda SATA Drives in Raid 1 but myself I would rather just backup to another SATA Drive that I goes off line.

Ok that sounds like a plan, and is what I will go with thanks!

512GB m2 Nvme for OS and Apps ( will also be able to fit some Oculus games on this one) , and 1TB Samsung Evo SATA for all my games.
I will also get a large platter drive for all my docs, videos, music, etc.
Going with all new drives for this build.

Would I be correct in saying PE2 slot is going to be covered up by the EVGA RTX 2080 Ti FTW3 Ultra card?
I think it is like a 2.5 slot card...
Or looking at it again, maybe not can't really tell for sure.

Close, but still have room but for cooling I would with a 2 Slot Card as well or get the 2 Slot Back Plate.
You could also use the M.2 Slot on top to free up PE3 and not using the U.2 Ports would make more since.

Yes thanks, that is probably what I will do - use the M.2 slot on top. RTX 2080 Ti FTW3 Ultra already on pre-order. So sounds like PE-2 may be blocked.

Re: New Z390 Build upcoming - some questions? 2018/10/13 03:58:07 (permalink)
Ok got the SSD's on order, I went with:
1TB Samsung 970 Pro m2 Nvme.
1TB Samsung 860 Evo Sata SSD.

The 970 Pro will house my Windows, Apps, and some games.
The 860 Evo will house just games.
Will add a platter drive for my docs, vids, music, etc.

Any good case recommendations? I prefer probably full tower as that is what I always have used and like the room in those. I will be using a closed loop water cooler like the Corsair for the 9900k.

I sure hope EVGA does not take too long on this new upcoming Z390 Dark.

I just got in the Lian LI PCV3000 and I'm very happy with it so far. It is a SUPER quality case that is a very solid alternative to the Case Labs SMA8 for less than half the price. I'm planning a build pretty similar to yours from a component perspective, and we're on the same page on the Dark. Reallyyyyy hoping it's out soon, last piece of the puzzle for me on my new build.

I'm going to drop in an i9-9900k into my Z370 Classified K when the dust settles BUT here in Australia the shops taking pre-orders are gouging... $AUD859 that equates to about $USD610. (Lucky I don't want a 2080 TI with the current price exceeding 2 grand a card!).

PS. I've noticed lots of people taking about using/wanting Nvme or SSD's for their games. Have you thought about using a hybrid hard disk (SSHD) like the Seagate FireCuda as a cheaper option? I use a 500GB 970 EVO Nvme for my boot drive, a 2TB FireCuda for games and 3 x 2TB IronWolf in RAID 5 for everything else.

Hey bcavnaugh,

I am curious about something.
Why do you suggest not using a Microsoft Account for the Windows 10 install, but a Local Account?
My current Windows 10 on this rig I have now, I used a MS account and seems to be fine.

Hey bcavnaugh,

I am curious about something.
Why do you suggest not using a Microsoft Account for the Windows 10 install, but a Local Account?
My current Windows 10 on this rig I have now, I used a MS account and seems to be fine.

Local Account is easy to manage over your Microsoft Account and you have a backup account on the Computer to unlock your Primary Account (I have this) More Data is passed on to Microsoft and some tools require you to even Logon to your Microsoft Account to even run like One Note. I have Office Installed and have my Own One Note that I use and it not connected to my Microsoft Account.
Added with the 1809 Version of Windows 10 you now even have to add 3 Security Question on Local Accounts, really dumb IMO.
I have a small home network and use the same User Name and Workgroup on all of them and it makes it easier to have a local account to access other computers within the network. Kind of like a Domain just not the Extra Security of a Domain.
I don't need or want my Computers Bound to a Microsoft Account in the end. I do not store any of my Data on MS Drive or whatever they call so I even turn that off and keep my data local and on my File Server and yes Backups.

This is not the case with the Microsoft Store as I do long on with my Microsoft Account as you have too to install your Games that you have Paid For and what not.
And I do this Only on the Computer that I game on for GOW4 and Minecraft and also I have to logon to Xbox.
On my Other Computers I do not log on to the Microsoft Store.

Re: New Z390 Build upcoming - some questions? 2018/10/26 06:09:20 (permalink)
Ok so I am seriously considering adding a second M.2 Nvme 1tb Samsung 970 Pro for my new Z390 Dark build.
I currently have 1ea Samsung 970 Pro m.2 Nvme 1TB and 1ea Samsung 860 Evo Sata SSD 1TB.

Thinking of adding another 1tb Samsung Pro m.2 Nvme, and not having a platter drive at least for now.

So as I understand it, the only thing I will lose by doing so, is the PE 3 PCIe slot right? I will still have PE 4 available for use should I need, for instance to put my SoundBlaster Z in ( should I not be pleased with onboard Creative audio), or should I need to put my Innatek USB 3.0 PCIe card in? ( hopefully will not need either with the onboard USB 3 ports for my Rift).

Any other downside to having two of the m.2 Nvme drives other than losing PE 3?
Lastly, should I consider adding heatsink to the m2.Nvme or it will be ok without? I have read that if their temp gets above 50c data transfer will decrease?

Thanks for any feedback,

Don't forget there is also the  NU Audio on that board - look at this thread - https://forums.evga.com/FindPost/2866836

Use the included thermal pads for the M.2 sticks, it is the controller that gets warm and starts to throttle. Controller is on the bottom of the M.2 stick. In reality it only gets warm if you are copying huge (multi gig) files or bench marking the drives. In every day usage heat is not a problem. I have 2 EVOs on my X299 Dark, just using the included thermal pads and have not seen a problem. BUT the X299 Dark does have them under the shroud with the fan :P

OK, I do admit that is apples to oranges as far as the setup between the boards

I use an EKWB "EK-M.2 NVMe Heatsink" to house my EVO NVMe drive and it dropped a bit over 10°C off the drive's temperature.

OK thanks much for the info, I will not worry with heatsinks!
As I understand it on the audio, the NU is only on the FTW, not the Dark. The Dark has Creative.

Only reason I'm thinking that it is is because of the yellow caps that are pictured on the dark. Unless I am wrong they have not been seen prior to NU Audio

Yeah but look and compare the pics, I don't think the Dark has as many as the FTW.
Not sure what they are for on the Dark though.

Re: New Z390 Build upcoming - some questions? 2018/10/29 03:32:05 (permalink)
OK gang just to clarify on the Dark board:
If I add a second m.2 Nvme, I will only lose PE-3 correct? No other issues I should be aware of?

I will still have PE-4 available to me if I should need it, to add a card in like an audio or USB 3 card should I want correct? About to pull the trigger on another m.2 Nvme and just want to make sure I understand fully.
And lastly just out of curiosity, where is that u.2 Nvme port? Can't seem to identify it from the pics of the board.

Ok one more lastly:

I have the 970 Pro m.2 Nvme 1TB already. That will house my Windows, Apps, and some games.  Looking at the Samsung 860 Evo 2TB m.2 ( not Nvme).

I would use it for installing games on, any big difference between m.2 and m.2 Nvme for using it for gaming?
Certainly the Evo is a little more cost effective, and I would not mind having a 2TB - lots of room for games and growth.

Course I also have already the Samsung 860 Evo 1TB SATA drive I will be putting in also.

Thanks for any feedback!
