 Hello everyone,

 I just set up this system: EVGA Z590 Dark (1.06) ; intel 11900k/EVGA CLC 280mm ; RTX 3080 FTW3 Ultra ; 32G Corsair Vengeance 3600mhz XMP1 Gear 1 ; WD Black SN850 Gen4/Windows 11 ; Creative AE-7 ; 4 - 4TB WD Black drives.

And I am having some kind of issue I cannot figure out.   For some reason ever since I installed Windows 11 Pro on my M.2 I have been getting BSOD, BUT only when trying to remove or install certain drivers. EVERYTHING else checks out!!

 I have run:
CrystalMark on my WD M.2
Cinebench R15
Prime95 - 30 mins
3D Mark - 16,876
Several demanding games, MSFS for hours and hours.
Transferred Terrybytes of data/stuff back to my system from my NAS
Ran the windows 11 "Driver Verifier" (the one that comes with windows that stresses your drivers) (and no black screen happened)
Re-installed Windows 11 (not fully but with keeping all my apps folders)
Ran the full Windows Memory Tester (is there a better one?)

And installed many other apps and programs, without issue.

I have never seen this kind of thing before, and I have no idea what could be causing it.  The Black Screen of Deat NEVER creates a log file, event viewer does leave a "Fatal Hardware Error" in the log BUT, I'll be damned if I  can find it!!

I ran my system for about 3 days (for break-in of the cooler) and thought I had cured the problem, BUT when I tried to run DDU to put on the new Nvidia Hotfix driver last night, it happened again...in safe mode!!

The STRANGEST thing is....it does finish removing the drivers, then it dumps!!

Any ideas on this, has anyone else seen this before?  I see several threads on some other hardware sites about the ASUS board and 11900k doing this same thing, BUT, no one ever figures this out.

I can't seem to attach images, so I will post links to my BIOS voltage and other settings:

I have also tried the Windows memory tester, and Gear 2, turning XMP off....default everything.

The ONLY piece of hardware I have an issue with is my webcam, sometimes when I boot it shows up as an unknown device...

Use a Host site like IMGUR - then Rt click on the photo & copy "image link"

EVGA is not currently allowing Image uploads

Actually, I did a clean install, I installed it from an official DVD, from an OEM version I bought.  It is fully updated.

Unfortunately, as of right now there are not windows 11 drivers for everything. like my Creative sound card, they do not have those for windows 11 yet, the ones I have now are for windows 10, I installed it in a compatibility mode through and it worked, the sound card works perfectly, music sounds amazing.

You know what, I do remember that the first thing I did after installing windows 11 was to try to install the drivers for the motherboard from the FlashDrive that came with it, it locked right about when trying to install the wireless device??  Actually, I think THAT is where it all started, so I can't be sure if all of the intel drivers got installed or not because after that I disabled that wireless thing.

By the way, this computer is FAST, I am running MSFS 2020 in ultra with NO slowdowns or stutters, got a ton of add-ons in the Community folder too..... Flew around for about 2 hours last night. If there was an issue with the video card I think I would have found it.

I just can't figure this out.

I have run all of these with NO issues found:
    chkdsk /f /r
    sfc /scannow
    DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

System overclocks perfectly, was running all cores at 4.8, prime95, got a little hot at about 80-85c on some cores, but that app runs everything at full tilt. I'm not going to try to run it for a couple of hours until I figure out this other issue though.

By the way, appreciate the help....I'm at a total loss here.

I might have to delete the partition on my M.2 and do another full-on windows install, but if it still does it again after that.......

Device manager - showing any issues ?

the MB USB might have had older drivers, don't know

W11 tends to load many "Windows drivers" & not OEM drivers

You could try W11 update & see if it wants to update some drivers

Sounds like hardware instability since you’re getting whea errors. Could also be a bios issue.

The device manager is clean, as long as I keep my USB webcam unplugged, and windows update shows no updates or alternate updates, fully updated.  As I said, everything in windows works perfectly, it's only with driver changes.

I wonder which piece of hardware it would be?? OR what issue it could be in the BIOS, I have tried everything I know how to do, and have updated the BIOS to v1.06.  ALTHOUGH, now that you mention it, I did install windows BEFORE I noticed that the bIOS needed to be updated. At first, I had assumed it would be flashed with the latest BIOS, but it actually came with version number 1.02?

I'm going to try to run Prime95 for a few hours, see if the processor and ram are not the problems, and then if it keeps doing it after that, I guess I'm going to have to delete the partition and see if it's the M.2.

it's SO strange that it ONLY does it on a driver removal/install...

It can't be my 3080 video card running at PCIe 4.0 for the first time?? can it? I mean it ran fine at PCIe 3.0 for quite a while now.

good grief, I hate hardware errors that don't tell you what hardware is doing the error....THAT should be next on Microsoft's list!!

Hard to say which piece of hardware it is without looking at the error in windbg. Can you repro this issue using windows 10? Running in pci-e 3.0 for testing to try and narrow down the issue wouldn’t hurt. When you say black screen of death I’m assuming you’re talking about the new blue screen that is actually a black screen in windows 11, and not just a blank black screen on your monitor correct?

Actually, I just went through all of the USB hubs/controllers in Device Manager, one at a time, and ran "update driver" on each, most of them are generic drivers. A lot of them had me restart the PC to update, but that's probably because I have some USB stuff plugged in.
After that, still getting the 1 Fatal error in event viewer at boot.

I did just "check" the tightness of the CPU cooler the other day, actually, I tore the PC apart down to an empty case, and reconnected everything one at a time, reseating the PCIe cards, power connectors, fan plugs, etc.  But I didn't torque on the cooler or anything, just made sure it was on there tight, and not loose.

I just now ran Prime95 for about 30 mins, 2 of my cores are hitting 100c during the test, #3 and #5, while the rest hit between 80-99c, but the CPU seems stable. So I'm going to try a lower voltage.

I have tried default settings in bios, ram CPU, etc, but it does the same thing. Tried ram at Gear 1, Gear 2, XMP on XMP off, still the same.

I'm not completely sure my EVGA CL cooler is working properly, during the Prime95 tests the fans never seemed to hit 100%, that seems unusual with the CPU using 100c doesn't it?  Flow Control is set up the way I had it set on my other system....

I may try disconnecting the CL cooler from the USB and see if the error goes away?

I don't know what else I can try, maybe a different M.2, new Windows install?? I don't have a free version of windows 10 though, only windows 11.

PS: Oh, and I just tried to install the latest intel chipset drivers from the EVGA website for my board, locked up and BSOD...again no log file recorded.

Have you done a cmos reset on the bios? The timings that are input into your bios are wrong, you have 18-22-42-7-10 when it should be 18-22-22-42. Being you made the timings so loose its able to work but is that affecting other things too down the line is hard to say.

I have not tried the CMOS reset yet, I will try that this morning. Do the timings look correct in CPUZ?  Doesn't the XMP1 profile set the timings?  it has been a while since I have built a PC. https://imgur.com/oyTXK0F

Ran Prime95 again last night for an hour, stable at with all cores 4.8 and running cool at 2.85 volts.  I also lowered the voltage of the ram back to 1.35.

I will reset the CMOS and then redo my settings, see what happens, thanks for the suggestions.

Say, do any of you all have the Black board?? If so, what do the Beep codes mean? I actually had the beeper turned off, but turning it on, the board beeps like6-8 times really fast while it's booting, and I also get like a black screen right before the Z590 splash screen, that has a curser in the middle left of the screen and a code for keyboard check on it in the lower right corner? It's either 9C or 98.   Is that normal?

Thanks for the help by the way.

OH and one more thing, I ran "Scan for hardware changes" in Device Manager last night again and it BSOD Machine Check Exception, that is the first time it has done that, but something seems to be not working on the motherboard.  I wish I could find out what it is, maybe I can disable it in BIOS.  But so far the system is stable at running even under stress...... which is so frustrating.

Ok I tried the CMOS reset, and set my timings to CL-18 Trcd/Trp-22 and TRas-42, which is what I did before? Correct?

And when I set it to XMP1 it uses those timings?  Because that's what it shows in CPUID.

I think I'm going to delete the windows partition and start over with windows, if it does this again I'm calling tech support, see if that can help, and if not I guess I'm RMA'ing the board, because everything else checks out.

IF anyone comes up with any ideas in the next hour or so, please let me know I will check back before I go ahead.

BSOD MCE (9C) could mean your cpu is the issue. A machine-check exception (MCE) is a type of computer hardware error that occurs when a computer's central processing unit detects an unrecoverable hardware error in the processor itself, the memory, the i/o devices or on the system bus. It is not caused by software.

I just checked, it's actually 98 and B4 after that.

What about the beep codes? do the black boards beep like a lot of fast little beeps?? Or is that all the USB devices being detected?
    thanks for the info

Yeah, thats what I thought, I've read through so many forum post threads about this 11900k/Z590 and their "issues" that I have forgotten most of what I don't have notes for.

Well, I have contacted tech support for the board, maybe they can help me diagnose this, I also posted over at the MS Bluescreen forums a log file as well, hopefully one of those 2 things can point me to the problem. If it's the CPU so be it, I might RAM it, or run over it with my truck....lol, no I will RMA it.

For now, I'm going to delete the partition and try a windows 11 reinstall, THIS TIME I'm going to let windows install the chipset drivers for whatever they find nessessary, as many of these drivers I have may not be windows 11 compatible for all I know.

I truly appreciate everyone taking the time to ry to help a brother out. It's why I keep coming back. Hopefully if I ever figure this out I can treturnm the favor and help someone else one day.

I would say take it off xmp and put it on manual cause your ram voltage is wrong too...it should be set to 1.35 not 1.45, that's way too much which xmp is known to do. Do the first 4 timings as 18-22-22-42 and put the rest on auto with the command rate at the bottom set to 2, then hit the save and reset.

I don't think setting your ram manually will help since you tried the bios at default settings which will set the ram really slow for stability. If you would like to try it anyways I would do the following...

    3200
    1.35v
    First four 18-22-22-42
    Command Rate 1.

I see now its 3200 ram sticks after i seen saj's post, i thought they were 3600's. So still go manual, the way you listed it above, but input the voltage and timings that are listed on the sticks, but id still do a command rate of 2 for now while your trying to figure this out cause two is much easier to get stability with than 1. That at least explains why it was over volting your sticks so high. Im sorry brotha i wasnt being as careful with your specs as i should have been. Sorry for any confusion.

He actually has 3600. It says it right there in his bios. I only suggested 3200 because that is what his cpu recommends as the max frequency for ram.

This is something I don't understand, change the "first 4"

The first 4 timing settings on my board are:
    TCL
    TRCD/TRP
    TRAS
    TRAD_S

Are these the "4" you are referring to? Because the BIOS says you can ONLY pick a factor between 1 and 15 for TRAD_S, and THAT would be the 4th timing setting which everyone is telling me to change to 42.

I think It's supposed to be like this:
    TCL - 18
TRCD/TRP - 22  <--- THIS equals both the T RCD AND TRP, which is 2 timing settings in one??
    TRAS - 42

BUT it doesn't matter anyway, because I went down and picked up a 11700k today and it's doing the exact same thing, so it's definitely NOT the CPU or the socket, I looked over the socket with a magnifying glass today, it's in pristine condition. And since both the ram and the CPU check out under extreme stress, it's GOT to be an issue with the motherboard/chipset.
I found that the system (the one I am on right now) will lock instantly when I try to install the Intel Serial IO driver, and I mean instantly.....THAT has got to be a problem with the motherboard.

    So new CPU
Moved the M.2 to a Gen 3 slot
    Reinstalled windows FULLY.

still, crashes when I try to install ANY intel chipset driver, and since I can't fully install the motherboard drivers, all the other driver installs have issues.  Programs and games install and run fine, NO problem at all!!

Because right after it locks-up just trying to install a simple driver for the chipset, I can reset the PC, jump into ANY game while listening to music and talking on TeamSpeak, and run it all night long at max settings....and THAT makes no sense.

I think I'm going to start the RMA process tomorrow,  I NEED a reliable PC for everyday stuff, so I will have to build another rig while the RMA happens.  Then when (and if) I get a dark board that works I can build a monster.

Anyway, thanks for trying to help, I have exhausted EVERY type of troubleshooting there is, this board has got to be defective.

On mainstream you can't set trcd and trp separately so there is only 1 setting for it.

Hope the RMA works for you, if not the Apex XIII is a really solid board if you want to swap for something else.  OCF is too but a little more finnicky lol.
