To Make a long story short, I just bought the parts to start upgrading my rig. I had originally bought a new case and good psu that I thought I would be able to use for a while (Seasonic Prime Ultra gold 650W),but as it turns out my new motherboard needs not only an 8pin power connector but also a extra 4 pin. The Seasonic does not have the needed cables for the extra 4 pin. I plan on getting a 3070 Ti if I can win the waiting game, and want to go EVGA with my next psu, but the different models are confusing even in the 80 plus gold category with 750-850w, that I cant decipher which one I should go with. I don't need a top of the line Titanium or Platinum, but I dont under stand the differences between the G+,GR,GA,G3,G5 or G6

if you mind me asking, maybe we could take a look at the motherboard that you are connecting your PSU to?

sounds like pretty high end mobo

I tried that, but none of the recommendations would not include the necessary connections, i know i want a 750 or 850w i am just confused on the differences between all the different models even in just the 80 plus gold catagory

In a similar position would love to know myself. Saw platinum and titanium 80s but I am not sure I have to go that far for my new build.

    I would just get a 1000watt g6 or a Corsair rm1000x.
Both gold, both full modular. It’s a overkill but not much more than the 850 watt.

what is your budget? G6-1000W will be enough for a long time.
I use evga 220-0750-X1 one of the most popular and reliable psu.
Great package, 4-pin and support up to 4 graphic cards.
*motherboards equipped with way 4-pin connector since 2000 year. Today all psu comes with 4-pin conector for MOBO.

Recommend a 1000watt g6 as well. I got one and it’s pretty quiet.

This the last one and promoted by evga unit. Probably 220-G3-1000-X1 will be my next psu.

I'm glad someone posted this post. I was super confused, still might be a little. but the G6 140mm compared to 150mm. Other than than, I'm a bit confused too. The chart above seems helpful. I'm planning 1000w G6 next... if i can find it...

i suppose that extra 4 pin is if you are planning to do some extreme overclocking, then u'll have to find yourself some better PSU

but if you are just plain gamers, i suppose u won't have to plug in that extra 4 pin

If the OP is not doing the very extreme over-clocking then the extra 4 pin is not necessary in most cases.  The Mobo companies put them there, but almost all the time they are not necessary.  If you had a Godlike board or something similar then I would say yes, but if you are a gamer/casual overclocker then it would be more than likely optional.

Where did you see that it was required that you need to add that extra 4 pin?

As for power supply the 650 you are bought might be a bit light, but not knowing what processor and other parts you have make that hard to figure out.  I would still go with a gold standard PSU though.  To me, bronze is more like for general use or low level work machines.  It really isn't that much difference in cost to own if you factor in the number of years it will be in use.  I'd recommend going with a 850 watt if possible.  It would give you room for growth when it comes time to upgrade again.

If you are playing AAA games, the 3070 should last you a couple of years, but with only 8gb of VRAM it might leave you wanting to upgrade sooner than say if you bought a 3080 or 3090.  With that in mind, going with a 850 watt power supply given the power needs of current GPUs the 850 would give you more room in case you decide to go with a 3080 replacement in the future.  850 might not be enough, but it would more than handle your current needs while staying at or below levels that would cause lead to lower power efficiency or stress the power supply reducing it's lifespan.

If you go over 850, the price jumps but the 1000 watt EVGA models are about 50 bucks more than their 850 counterparts which is a reasonable increase.  Gold rated would be ideal, and modular design would be nice and highly recommended.  But I would recommend spending the low 200 dollars for the 1000 watt if you can find it at msrp.  I was looking for a 1000 watt model, but my local shop had the EVGA platinum 1200 watt available in store so i bought it.  It was 350 plus tax, but it ended my search as anything over 850 was hard to find.  My PSU will meet my needs for the next 10 years and with EVGA warranty and customer support it was a easier decision.
