It would be a terrific idea if others knew what your use case is. Otherwise, it is just random guesses.

SLI and dual GPU is must be supported by game developer (nvidia gived up already), so it is kind of dead...

If the games you want to play support sli = 2080 ti’s

If the games don’t support sli = 3090.

What about the benefit of NVLINK stacking VRAM for games @4K or 5120x1400? No need for SLI support if both cards utilize combined VRAM and GPU.

There are no games that support the vram stacking feature.

Are you sure that SLI scaling with 2080 ti's will beat a 3090 consistently?  Its not common to get 200% the FPS of a single 2080 ti in most games that support SLI.  Depending on the game, I've seen 30% to 65% increase in FPS in other people's benchmarks with SLI 2080 ti cards.

I've seen leaked 3090 3DMark Timespy scores, they are lower than my 2x2080Ti scores by 2000-4000 points.

I'm really thinking about moving up to the 2080 Ti FTW3 NVLINK/SLI and skipping on the 30 series completely. It seem even with the GDDR6X with the 30 series. It can't beat two 2080 Ti's in SLI. It would be an affordable solution for me. If I can get 200 fps or 250 fps. That is more then playable for my needs.

Timespy scales better in SLI than most games scale in SLI.

if the games you play actually support sli...

Take it from a guy who had a top 20 firestrike ultra score in Feb 2019 when i ran the tests..
It's very powerful but the support is so limited

don't forget that SLI is very bad with frame times. that's why most devs won't support SLI anymore, and nvidia just announced the death of SLI anyway.
NVLINK on 3090 is basically only there for the memory sharing in workstation applications, to show it is in the Titan line, even if nvidia insists on making it a gaming card. they should just unlock the workstation drivers already.

Fewer and fewer games will properly support SLI going forward.
