Prices of NAND flash could drop to historic lows of $0.08 per gigabyte in 2019, according to Jim Handy from Objective Analysis, addressing delegates at the 2018 Flash Memory Summit. If you add the cost of the controller, optional DRAM chip, and other low-cost parts that make up an SSD, 480~512 GB drives under $70 could finally be a reality; followed by 1 TB under $120, and 2 TB under $200. That could put the mechanical hard drive industry under immense pressure but old style Hard Drive plants have been closing anyway.

price rot on SSD has been very high and average selling prices of 120 GB are now as low as $33 on a recent price check

I put a cheap Kingston A400 into a Lenovo T400 I have and it boots up XP etc very quickly.

Machine has 4GB of memory so the SSD seemed like the best upgrade over other ideas.

I'm mighty excited to see a 2tb SSD for 200. Rebuild my array for $1000 and have 8tb of pure SSD goodness.

2TB SSD drives are still a premium item but average selling prices have come down a tad.

120GB and 240GB SATA drives are not well suited to RAID but with JBOD and Steam can use multiple drives to store games, its not a big problem with 6 low cost SSD drives

480GB SSD products are also falling fast, I have one in my Lenovo X220 and it now sells for < 1/2 which I bought it for last year.

Still too expensive for me. I have a 120gb SSD and I'd like to get another with higher capacity, but I feel the price is still too high for minor convenience of not having to switch install locations for a game or two.

I want a 2+ TB drive for my D drive in my desktop.  Preferably something like 4 TB would be great.  Prices need to really come down for that to happen...

That is what I was mentioning. With games being so damn large I have to move around installations of them to fit on my tiny drive.

I tried moving my installations once but couldn't figure it out.  I ended up just redownloading and reinstalling them on my RAID0 Raptors.  Don't think Comcast was happy with my downloads for that month. lol

RAID with SSD is risky due to the way they work. Corporate setups use redundancy in RAID 6 so that if a drive craps out the array is safe while a rebuild goes on with a replacement drive.

By Raptors I meant WD VelociRaptor 10K RPM Drives.

I do wish to RAID a bunch of SSDs one day with most likely a backup drive for redundancy but don't see that happening in the foreseeable future.

Yuppers lolz and that power cord they keep tripping over they must fly like a Frisbee.
You would think as low as the prices are, there would be a standard ssd in laptops.
I don't use them much so maybe they are?

Short of my initial issues with OCZ drives (I don't think I ever had anything from OCZ work as advertised) and a personal laptop I haven't seen any raid issues with SSDs. Could you elaborate?

Heck I have one server that has 4x raid5 arrays with 5 800gb 1.8" ssds each across two controllers and no issues yet 2 years on with extremely heavy use. Probably have 50 or so servers with dual SSDs in raid 1 for the OS without any issues. We have several old servers doing the equivalent of Cachecade when that was a thing. I'm getting new servers now using BOSS cards that are more or less raid controllers with 2x m.2 Sata drives on them.

The drop in price will be nice. The one thing I have noticed is also a lot of SSD drives are very good speed wise often you would never notice a difference between an Intel drive or a Samsung in real world situations.

FYI... never use NAND or any version of flash for long term (or even medium term) backup.

Believe it or not, spinners are much better suited for the task.

Flash can start to get a little “weird” if they go awhile without use or get too close to capacity.

I’d keep a spinner for daily backups. Believe it or not, much more reliable with greater data integrity than flash.

    For gaming... non-issue.
