So after smashing a billet of 15N20 (a bandsaw type nickle steel) and some O1 Tool steel together into i forget how many layers, I started to shape this lump of steel into a knife with a tang.

Here is the final forge.  Granted i am still VERY new at this (<6 months), but i found with more heat i can manpulate steel with a smaller hammer, then a larger one.

You can actually see the layers even before I acid etch it.

Starting to grind into shape:

Layers become more obvious.

Sandblasted reveals some of the patterns.  Slight crack where the damascus met the low carbon rod during the weld.  I have since welded, ground, and repaired it:

Just grabbed a piece of firewood off my fireplace and threw it in the bandsaw for a handle.

Some initial shaping on the belt sander, and burning the handle into the wood.

Fresh out of the acid:

Trying out various finishes from Lowes:

(The darker Danish Oil won the competition)

And here is the finished product:

What do you think?  Not bad for my first Damascus knife.  This thing is a brute.  I stabbed it has hard as I could thrust into a 2x4 and the tip didn't bend.  Granted the blade is small since i was just getting my feet wet, but it came out really nice I think.

I am addicted to making them.  I have a BUNCH of other billets welded up and ready to go.

I didn't use wood stabilizer, never heard of it to be honest. I don't do any wood work. I will do that in the future. I had plans of getting some fancy wood like cocobolo or something of that nature, but as I was staring at my fireplace I wondered if I could just use a chunk of oak from the pile.

It was more of a test run, and see what happens. I'd love to see your vacuum chamber though.

Wow that is awesome!!I am REALLY impressed. Dude I am in a market to buy me a Damascus blade too.  I was wanting to buy this bade the other day but its sold out now. Yeah I prefer to have a folding blade so I can carry easily. For a fix blade I would beat the snot out of it for bushcraft wise though.

Thanks!  Glad you like it!  If your in the market for a Damascus blade, I am sure I could be convinced to make one to your specifications.  I plan to make a few, so if you have an idea of something you would like made shoot me a PM and I will see what I can do.

I have a billet that will be over a thousand layers.  (1152) or perhaps more.

Nice job. Did you use a wood Stabilizer on the handle?
When you make knife handles you should stabilize the wood first. I also stabilize horn handles.
I use minwax wood hardener, I made a vacuum chamber and use an automotive brake hand held vacuum pump.
There is a lot of info out there if you google it.
You should be able to get this at your local hardware store, home depot lowes.

I just had an AH-HA moment when i was googling.  This would be an awesome way to finish knife handles so they are very durable, and retain exotic woods beauty.

Re: My first hand forged Damascus knife. 2015/10/15 07:01:41 (permalink)
The video is neat.  It shows them making a mallet head.  They take the chunk of wood and drop it in the chamber along with a resin that gets drawn into the wood as the air gets sucked out of it.  Then they put the part in the over and cure the resin.  I think that would be the best way to do knife handles.

The only conundrum I found, is do I buy his directly for $140, or build my own.  The parts came out to around $120 from McMaster and that's slightly overbuilding it (as I tend to overbuild things).   Its usually more fun to make things for me, but the time saved (and I am only saving $20) would normally be worth it - then again he has a 1-4 week lead time.  To me its more the experience gained building one vs buying it.  Another drawback is that if I fail, it will cost way more, then I should have invested in the original $140.

Its lots of fun.  sometimes quite painful.  I looked like I had a disease on my forearm from all the slag that splattered on it, but I had to suck it up so that I didn't ruin the steel.  Thankfully it has since healed and I have learned many lessons along the way.

believe it or not... I want to try to make a wooden topped waterblock.  I watched those videos on wood and they practically turn the wood into plastic.  I think it would be fun to try at least.

My problem with paying $200+ for a knife, i would be too afraid to use it like i do $30-80 knifes. It would end up being a knife to show off, never really used for cutting or stabbing into dirt (might damage or scratch it).

I like my Kershaw 1670S30V Blur Knife with S30V Steel, it's not too expensive to where i would be worried if it gets scratched up or chipped edge.

I know what you mean brother and nice knife. My favorite affordable knife from Kershaw has got to be the Leek. My favorite knife brands are from kershaw, Boker, Benchmade, and Microtech. But yeah as for expensive knives its like I would love to have this Microtech knife but I would be afraid to EDC and abuse it as a tool like I do with all my EDC knifes. Also not to forget with the chance of losing it too. Anyways it does not take a $200-$800 knife to impress me. A simple $30 knife can be just as good. My most favorite knife out on the market for me that does it all for EDC with practical and self defense use has got the be the Boker Kalashnikov Automatic Knifes. Great thing too is they dont break the bank and have good AUS 8 steel. These knifes deploy super fast with a VERY satisfying feel.

Well, nicely done/forged knife Nate.   You have the skyrim-itis for forging? That freaking game is addictive, but love it

    Whats your next project?

Those who abuse power, are nothing but scumbags! The challenge of power is how to use it and not abuse it. The abuse of power that seems to create the most unhappiness is when a person uses personal power to get ahead without regards to the welfare of others, people are obsessed with it. You can take a nice person and turn them into a slob, into an insane being, craving power, destroying anything that stands in their way.
