So many cool looking patterns, that turned out very nicely. Kind of reminds me of wood grain. I'm glad your sharing your projects with us.

Glad you like it!

As for the twist pattern, I have tried it and it was the knife that didn't survive the heat treating process.  I will try it next though.  Working on the handle for this one today.

Looks amazing!
Why didn't it survive the heating process?  What went wrong?

This was the twist pattern knife.  well.. more like a stacked twist.  I twisted 3 bars, and forge welded them together.  It was going to be beautiful.  Tool steel is quenched differently then the other knife (above).  It warped during the quench so I just re-heated it, bent it back into shape and quenched it again.  Tool steel as I have read requires a more slow soaking of heat.  Doesn't seem to like rapid changes in temps.  But I am still reading up.  I am no ABS master blade smith.  Just learning as I go.

well, I spent MONTHS learning about CNC's before I got into it, and took 2 years to make it, so I learned at a much slower pace.  I just kind of dove into this after only a month or 2 of researching.

That lower billet is 20 layers, and I just folded it 3 times, so Its already at 60 layers.  The spring steel knife will start at 32 layers.

The next project is going to be "feather" Damascus (the spring steel).  I will die trying as I think that is the sexiest thing I have ever seen.  (but I still have a twist pattern much closer to being made)

As for getting my own ore??  meh.. no thanks.  The Japanese that made the samurai swords started with the same and it becomes steel.  Im already starting WITH steel.  Call me crazy, but I think if a Japanese sword smith started out with tool steel he would make a FAR better katana then what he would make from ore.  But what do I know, im no ABS master.

Yah I watched a show on the making of a Samurai sword. It's amazing how they did it with what they had back in the day, but there is stronger steel now. Anyway, that is some real knife making Kung Fu my friend ;)

It does make me wonder if a grand master did the same method that I did, what a work of art and insanely durable piece it would be.
