Hello everyone!

I'm a hardware specialist and work in IT, and due to some lucky happenstance I've been able to get an old Dell 2970 server and use it for hosting various things. However, it hogs quite a bit of electricity, and my main computer has come under scrutiny for also using up quite a bit.
My current personal PC is an SR-X with 20 physical cores of CPU, 64 GB of 1600MhZ ECC RAM, an Enermax 1250W PSU, and some other shiny hardware that I would probably retain for the next PC, in a Rosewill Blackhawk Ultra case, and the question has come up of selling off the SR-X.
The problem is that there is no SR-X for sale online, no way for me to scope out how much I can earn from selling it, and no way to advertise for buyers without first buying the  parts for the new energy efficient PC, for which I am woefully without funds.

The alternative, of course, is to migrate the beast of a PC into a server role, replacing the old energy hog 2970, and operating without a personal PC besides a laptop for a few months while saving up to build a tiny gaming PC.

So my question is, what would you, the dear reader, do? Would you just operate on a laptop, piece out the rig, and sell without knowing how much you might get? Is the SR-X rare enough that it can fetch a decent price despite it's age? Questions, questions!

(Dear admins, I was really split between putting this up on General or here in Hardware, I am very sorry if I've made the wrong choice)

You would sell the SR-X with the E5-2630 V2 CPU (s) & RAM ?  You could try as a combo

Have you already applied to the Marketplace on the Forums ? How to apply for the EVGA Marketplace?

Energy usage still boils down to how you use the hardware.

What are you doing now ?  Server running & working hard 24/7 ?

How large are your drives & what type ? (those in your signature ? or would you add those on the server now ?)

The good news about selling a running rig - you don't have to sell & you can run tests to answer questions buyers might have

Budget being the biggest issue ... you would have to sell the existing to see how much cash you would have for a new build.

Your laptop would be your only PC while you were waiting to get the parts for your new build ... OK

Correct, I would want to sell the Mobo, the CPUs, the RAM, the PSU, and case if possible (I'd piece it out if that wasn't preferred) though I need to double check to make sure that the Xeon E5-2630 v2 are the CPUs in the machine right now. I think they are either Xeon E5-2687W or higher, since I did an upgrade.
(Then I checked my email for the purchase records)
I have two Xeon E5-2687W processors in there, actually, not the lower bracket V2s.

I am able to post on the marketplace, however it is explicitly stated not to post "Looking for buyer" type posts, and though I am looking for general advice, my questions could easily boil down to such.

Server tends to run at about 10% of usage most of the time, with breif spikes. I'm hosting two websites and several minecraft servers, so traffic determines usage.

Server has four 500GB HDDs in a RAID 10, and a single SSD for high priority storage. The VMware OS is on a flash card as recommended by VMware.
The beast computer has a 500 GB SSD for OS, a 2 TB primary use drive, a 3 TB backup drive, and I was in the process of (for the funzies) assembling an 8 drive redundant RAID to use for storage of important files by mutuals and business partners (I have two SAS-Sata breakouts), when I realized that if I did that, I should transfer the SR-X machine to full server use instead of personal use, or just make a Box O Disks and connect it to the actual server.

Running on my laptop in the meantime isn't the worst thing in the world, I'd do it if the SR-X stood to gain enough money to make the sale worth it (I literally don't even have a starting point of how much it could sell for ATM)

That's sort of painful, including CPUs. Plus I don't think there's any way for me to offer a warranty, though it is working wonderfully so it breaking isn't much of a risk. Hmm...

When I get home in a few days I'll run CPU-z, get some better images, and write up a Price Check. I think that minimum I'd have to get $1000 out of the sale to be able to pay for the new CPU/RAM/MoBo.

Though selling other components might raise the price a bit, not terrible. Thank you so much for your help!

    Happy to help ...

You have better CPUs & RAM .... those that are Crunching might have a better idea what your Combo is worth ... they can see your [PC] post & share their thoughts

Heavy items PSU & cases --> local pickup - as shipping could be very expensive

Local pickup or not selling the case, keep it in the server rack's empty space for a future project (Box o' disks anybody?). I'll figure that out once I've got an idea of the value.
