Horray! First Build Log. And a number of other "firsts": First system I've ever overclocked. First watercooled system. First case that required modification to fit the motherboard. The first rebuild was caused when I had a run-in with some nasty Tygon tubing that left plasticizer residue all over my formerly crystal-clear reservoir That was quickly removed and replaced with some much more impressive Primoflex LRT. I also remounted both my waterblocks and added some pull fans to my rad to improve the temps. [Pics are on my ModRigs.] However, when I originally built my SR-2, I had a measly HD 5850; not really suiting for an SR-2. Now I want to cram as much GPU power into my rig as possible for surround gaming, while still leaving room for a secondary GPU, sound card and PCIe-SSD. And since I've seen red team's and green team's dual-gpu cards--it's time for an upgrade! So, without further ado, here's the part list for the before and after: Currently: 2 x X5650's on water with HK 3.0 LT's, Thermochill 3x140mm rad, and one MCP-655 pump. SR-2 (Duh) 12 GB of 2000 MHz OCZ Reapers XFX 5850 Auzentech X-Fi Forte OCZ Vertex LE (boot) WD Black (storage) To be added: Dual EVGA GTX590's Hydro Copper's Thermochll 2x120 Rad Revodrive X2 (new storage drive; tested and working ) GTS 450 (Physics & Folding) Second MCP-655 EK SR-2 Waterblocks I plan on making this an all-internal build, so packing the case will be interesting... PICS on the way! Stay tuned. 8/25 Update: Final pics in this post: http://forums.evga.com/fb.ashx?m=1192702

I had some pictures saved from the first rebuild that show the mods I made to my PC-P80 to accommodate the SR-2: The oval shaped hole is too large to secure the stand-off, so I had to improvise: Yes it's tacky and ugly, but it's well out of sight, and will keep the SR-2 secure. Getting the PA140.3 in the front of the PC-P80 was a piece of cake, a quick bit of dremel work gets rid of the metalwork that keeps it from sliding in. The rest of the mounting only involved some rubber washers from Lowe's and the included screws. Now onto the new stuff: OH MY GOODNESS!!! MY POOR NF200's! This is what I found after removing the stock cooler--thermal paste oozing everywhere. Not really all that impressive for an SR-2. The 5520 chipset was no different, here it is after a 2+ hour gentle cleaning. Finally mounted. I couldn't resist fitting some tubing

Now onto mounting the new rad. The PC-P80 has a kit that replaces the top 140 mm with dual 120mm. So after affixing the radiator to the top, it was time to get everything to fit. A very close fit, indeed. Unfortunately, the barbs were partly obstructing the modular connectors that I needed, so a quick trip to Lowe's... ...buys me an extra 3/8". What's a pc builder without a little helper? I have some barbs, fittings, wirewrap, and heatshrink in the mail--more to come soon!

Update! Finally finished dressing my dual MCP-655-B's. I reused the included stands from the dress kits to fit the topper, which to me looks really sharp. All that was needed was a quick cut or two, some filing, and some touch-up paint to hide the cuts. Sorry the shot isn't the greatest, but this is the hard drive remounted on the side of the case (I had to move the hard drive to shuffle the guts around so the new rad would fit). You can't really see it here, but I soldered together a couple of my fans to consolidate the connectors. (Sleeved and shrink-wrapped naturally). No worries, I'll still be under the 12W limit of the connectors on the SR-2. Rather than have a random loose fill-line, I've opted to finally get a proper fill/drain system. This little guy was one giant PITA--had to do quite a bit of dremel work to get the fit just right. Because of the positioning, I had to drill through TWO thick sheets of aluminum. As for the bottom, that will have to wait--my favorite e-tailer was out of the fittings that I needed. :/ The GTX590's and the GTS450 are in the mail--unboxing & watercooled installation soon :)

I actually knew about the power supply bracket; even so, thanks for the tip. However, one of the requirements that I have is that the rough "shape" of the case be unchanged because it needs to fit inside box the case came in. I move around a lot at the present time and the original box is the best way to keep my rig save safe from nicks and dings. I will be making a "shroud" of sorts to cover the nylon spacers. Just wait and see :)

I am convinced: that the postal service has a very sick sense of humor. I ordered my Two-pack of 590 hydrocoppers straight from EVGA and the tracking has them down for TUESDAY after memorial day. So there goes the long weekend with a finished build... On the upshot, all of the modding-related parts are all here! It actually didn't take me all that long to finish the rest of the case mods I'm making, and, naturally, PICS! The distance between where I can mount my resevoir and my pump is too short for a dual-barb connection, so I ordered an extra Bitspower Crystal Link to make the connection. Personally, I think this look super-clean. Here's my idea for the drain system: a ball-valve followed by a drain port--a two-step system. Drilling time! At least I only have one sheet of Aluminum to go through this time... All done! I also installed my PaxMate soundproofing kit; I really dig the case bottom with this stuff. :D Add one more GPU-type bridge and I have a completely metal drain system. Here you can see the rest of my pump/res mount as well. I'm usually not this proficient with a razor blade, but I'm not complaining because the bottom came out great! This Akasa stuff is kinda hard to work with in tight spots... The side and top panels got the same treatment. Well since I only am waiting on my 590's, I've gone ahead and pretty much finished putting the machine together. All of the hardware mounting, tubing runs, and re-installation of hardware are all finished. Once the 590's are in I'll have a nice gallery of the finished build for your viewing pleasure. :) Have a nice extended weekend everybody! [Because I know mine will be spent staring at 4 empty PCIe slots-- *grumble* *grumble* *grumble* stooopid postman *grumble**grumble**grumble*]

Tiny update: I realized early on that my TPQ-1200 would have some trouble connecting all of my video cards and my SR-2 because each of the eight PCIe connectors are fused in pairs of two. I would have more than enough cable to connect the power connectors for CPU's GPU's and the auxiliary connectors on the SR-2, but because of the fused cables, one PCIe connector would be wasted on the CPU0 connector. This leaves my GTS 450 high and dry, so I needed a work around for this... I found an old molex y-adapter and I got an idea to get my 450 connected. You can pretty much guess what happened next... TA-DA! One custom DIY molex to PCIe adapter, pretty similar to: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812201004 Overall, I'm using essentially the minimum possible cable configuration supported by my TPQ-1200: 1 x SATA (3 connections) 2 x 8-pin CPU 8 x PCIe 1 x Molex (3+1 floppy) One molex goes to pumps, another to fans, and the last, well, you know that already. I would NEVER consider using this for any power-hungry card, but I'm sure that a GTS450 will be just fine. The bottom line is that I didn't require the use of additional cables that would eat into my already limited space.

I love all the expensive hardware, but I kind of wished that the whole thing could have a little more of a cleaner look especially with sleeved cables, a little too much tubing in the middle, and painting the case would've added a nice touch to it

Criticism is always welcome. After all, nothing is set in stone. I did personally sleeve all of the cables for my fans, pumps, and front panel connectors. The cables on my power supply actually are sleeved from the factory, the sleeving is just very thin. Not very asthetically pleasing, but, gotta work with what I got. The problem revolves around the design of the TPQ-1200; specifically the "power cache" caps. I could re-sleeve the cables, but the problem is that I more than likely would have to remove the caps (and loose the TPQ's great ripple rejection) or to attempt to reinstall them myself after cutting the old one loose. I may attempt that at a later date. I agree that the tubing needs...work. I was waiting on the GTX590's for so long that I rushed the end of the tubing runs. Long weekends with no parts makes for a sad PC builder. I've got some ideas on how to make the runs cleaner. Lack of paint was a personal preference. I thought the color matched well with the stainless steel on my EK block. Got the latest A53 BIOS and stress-testing at the moment--benching thereafter.

If you have any room behind your motherboard tray, you could run the cables behind those and then use sleeved extensions. I feel like that alone would make things look even better. I actually really like the clear tubing though. I think it works well with the un-painted steel of the case. Nice job, man! I just wish I had the money and the know-how to build something like that!

Alright, back again. Got my tubing reworked so it appears much more tidy. I had to incorporate one 90-degree elbow, but, it shouldn't really impact my flow all that much. (Not compared to a pair of 590's in parallel at least ). Holy smokes (literally) LinX pushes my Xeons hard. I don't even crack 70 on prime95 :/ I'm surprised how much the GFlops peak needed tweaking to get the maximum throughput. Booting in safemode removed my turboboost, so I needed to try something else. I finally got some impressive numbers when I tried a diagnostic startup. I lost the screenie somewhere, but prime95 is 24 hour stable, oh well. Let's get to benching, shall we? 3DMark11: P15638 http://3dmark.com/3dm11/1323412 3DMark06: 26797 http://3dmark.com/3dm06/15776700 The '11 score puts me pretty close to the top ten on ModsRigs, so I'm very happy with the result. I may push my hydrocoppers a little further over the factory clocks for some quick benching. Vantage, sadly, would not run for me. I actually hard-lock on the first demo. I'm not the only one reporting this problem, so...oh well. At least '11 works for me. I'd love to work more on the cabling, but I've run out of room in my case for any additional extensions. ( I tried, really.) And I'm way to chicken to crack open those huge 2200uF caps. Thanks for watching guys (and gals), it's been a pleasure providing some "entertainment" . Send a +1 my way if you like what you saw.

I used to LOVE OCZ RAM, until they decided to jump ship in the RAM battle. That's why I went with Patriot (coulda gone with Crucial or Corsair, but Patriot had a newegg code, lol) when I upgraded from 4GB to 8GB on my 780i board. Overall a nice clean build, inspirational to a limited extent as well.
Just as any other form of art, modding is a passion, not just a hobby. We fawn over it, we love it, we hold it near and dear to our hearts, we are passionate about it. We are modders, and we are artists. Also, if you like any of the advice I give, please recommend I get a BR, thanks!
