For my card i think if its below 55C or 60C (i forgot which one it is) on the core, the fans dont spin up at the auto settings of the normal bios.

If your PSU is older than 7 years old, what are you doing? Replace it, Yes.

I'd recommend a Seasonic Titanium one.. they're one of the strongest ones.

I have the 750W Titanium Prime Ultra from Seasonic, it's just a beast.

Sorry to hear you are having trouble's Whether your dealing with cars or computers. A new high performance part Will show you the weakest link in your machine. If you really want that gpu it might be in your best interest to try a different power supply. Your power supply was designed 7 years ago that's ancient by computer standards. Just a thought

My 1600W eVGA T2 is a beast as well.....People who are spending in excess of 1000 on a vid card and using an underpowered or old PSU is...astonishing.

I have had a power supply odyssey in the last 4 weeks to find the right power supply. First a Bequiet Straight Power 850W. Then an Enermax 1200W with fluctuating 12V values. Then a Corsair 1200W which took 5 minutes until I had a bios screen. Then a Bequit Dark Power Pro 1000W. Now I have a Bequiet Dark Power Pro 1200W and everything works perfectly.

Exact same thing happened to me just now.  Brand new EVGA 3090 FTW3 Ultra that I got as part of the Newegg 10/23 drop.  First day I've actually been able to use it.  Screens went blank mid-game, computer still up (could hear audio from game still happening).  Rebooted and windows reliability report showing "Hardware error."  Crashed again, then card only showing single red light above left most power connector -- won't even post bios.  Swapped 2080ti back in, everything working just fine.  Found this thread.  In process of RMA'ing with EVGA right now...

Had not tried overclocking at all.  Loaded Precision X1 right after i installed card, got firmware update prompt -> updated, but have not otherwise touched any settings.  Card is running on 3 independent power rails directly from my PSU (Corsair AX1500i - 1500W PSU) so should have enough power...

Will say that EVGA customer service is the best!  Also bought the EVGA enhanced warranty plan with cross shipping.

I'm about to do the same thing. I've got to say, I'm pretty irritated I might have to replace a 1000W PSU that barely got used to its full potential. **** is the point of a PSU if it's only good for like 5 years according to some people here? Do people here really replace their PSU like every few years??? I'm still not convinced my PSU had anything to do with this. Tempted to get my money back from Newegg and just be done with this whole endeavor for a while. This has been such a BS experience.

I guess, doing the math now, my old 4790K with two 290X cards was right on the cusp of 950W peak. So it did have a hard life for about a year. I'm sorry to sound whiny; I'm just really annoyed this PSU could very well be letting me down given its age now. If anyone's got other 1000W+ PSU suggestions that aren't crazy expensive, I'm open. I just wish I didn't have to consider one when it's about the worst time to be shopping for a PSU.

Is there any way I can test or check my PSU to see if it's actually under-performing now or not?

Well check and see what kind of warranty you have on your PSU as some have 5 10 or 12 year warranty.  I have a EVGA SuperNOVA 1600 T2 and it has a 12 year warranty.  So if they think its a PSU check about warranty coverage and if not good luck finding one as some has slim to find.

I also just read my EVGA Supernova G2 1000W has a 10 year warranty, which is definitely not up yet. So I don't know what on earth to think anymore, lol. I'm seeing more and more people pop up saying their card died exactly the same way mine did though. And many of them had systems less than a couple years old.

I might do that actually. I think I'm going to try to talk to someone there and get their opinion on my PSU and if they think it should be replaced for a 3090.

I'm not disagreeing with those who would buy a brand new PSU for something like the 3090. I just genuinely thought it wouldn't and shouldn't be necessary with mine only being pushed 1 year out of it's ~7 year life in my PC. Also the fact that it's within warranty yet just makes it more annoying. But I'll hopefully get some answers Monday from customer support.

Hey op, figured out my red light issue..

Ended up being psu, split the pcie cables over two psus and booted up. While taking the psu out, noticed i left it in multirail rather than single, flipped the switch and good to go (so far).

Not sure why multi worked prior without issues, been benching for hours drawing out 500-510w....

Hope you figure your issue out, likely psu

Does the email page for customer support go down every weekend or something? I've been trying to send an email about my situation since yesterday morning. I get an instant 404 error page when I submit. Is it down for anyone else?

This website has been an utter disaster for a while now to be honest. From not being able to post a reply without refreshing the page to it just outright not working. It's also the weekend so I doubt anyone is going to reply to you before Monday anyway.

Okay, glad I'm not alone. I had to refresh the 3rd page of my thread to get something other than a blank page myself. I was already prepared to wait till Monday to contact them. Just thought it'd be nice to get a jump on emailing them beforehand.

I would buy a solid 1200w PSU and give it a try before running through the RMA process or return of that card. Worth the try since you'll be waiting a VERY long time to get another one.

And you would be wasting money.  I tried PSUs from 750, 850, and 1000w, three computers... all ran great with 1080ti, 980, and a 2070super..... but the 3080 was dead in all of them.

Well I did some invoice digging and realized I had a brain fart, and the details of my PSU were off. I also forgot I was basing this off of my APC 1500va UPS readout which was also running my 32" monitor and speaker set... . So that was about an extra 100W added to my original claimed wattage that wasn't accurate.  I actually ran that crossfire setup on a Seasonic 850W for 7 months before I got the Supernova I have now; which ran it for another 6 months. I actually bought it in early 2015, making this PSU only 5.5 years old with only 6 months of being pushed hard with a crossfire setup. And not pushed that hard. My setup should've only drawn 800-850W watts at peak.

Maybe that will change some users' opinions on my PSU they had previously.

I get that we have no way of knowing what percentage of cards are failing and threads like this have a way of making the failure rate look higher than it actually is....

But the *mode of failure* is too consistent to attribute to the general "stuff breaks" standard.

I have been an electronics tech in the field for over two decades and consisten failure modes usually indicate a problem with the existing "approach".

Design, part selection, manufacturing methods....the cause of this issue needs to be isolated and changed.

None of those cards can imitate the same power draw as a RTX 3080 [source]. Also, not sure how old those power supplies are that you attempted with, that's always a factor.

This member saw some power limit issues when running Port Royal, they didn't have failure issues... but they were definitely throttled when trying to utilize a higher power limit.

Interesting. Now my question would be... Did you happen to use modular cables from the Seasonic power supply, on your EVGA one? I've seen that happen and cause this exact issue.

Main concern with aging on power supplies is capacitor ripple levels. After years of use, the capacitors will degrade progressively. The unit you have is decent, but I've seen much better ripple levels on other units in that class. 6 years ago 25mV ripple at full load was pretty good, I would estimate that as a 10 year PSU if you kept it around 500w load. Once you start jumping into the 70%+ load range, it's really hard on the capacitors and the longer it's ran like that the ripple gets worse. Platinum and Titanium certified power supplies don't really have that problem because most of them are under-rated, so 10 years product life is way more viable.

If you are looking for a turn-around time for RMA process, it's about 6 weeks unless you pay for Advanced RMA.
