Sometime last summer, I had put together a computer for a neighbor of mine, I went and got him an Asus TUF X570 board with a 3800XT (I know, I know, that is what they had at the time at Microcenter) and 16 gig of ram. GPU's were already a little tough even back then, and the 20 series weren't inexpensive, and as he was on a limited budget, I pulled from my pile one of my GTX 980Ti's and gave it to him as a gift. So, that is his setup, they had an 'ok' monitor, but even when I'd installed the system for him, they knew that sooner or later they would want an upgraded one. Looks like now is either sooner, or later, not sure which, but I'm on the hunt for some good advice regarding a monitor upgrade.

So, those are the specs of his system, and I got an text from him a few minutes ago asking if I had any suggestions for an upgrade to his monitor situation. I said sure, but need to know a few things first. Budget? Around $300 or so. Size? 22-24" range, obviously even a little bigger if possible. Priorities for it? Good resolution and refresh rate. Games you normally play? Main games currently are Fortnite and Rocket league.

So, as it's been a while since I bought a gaming monitor and I know that a lot of things have changed in the years since I did, I figured what better place to ask the question of than the forum at the best vid card mfg out there? ;-) Thoughts/suggestions, folks? Any other things you'd like to know about stuff I'll try and answer the question

He was doing some searching around while I was working, and asked me about this one. It's HP, so doubt it's top shelf, but then again, at under $300, I guess expectations have to be adjusted?

Well, after doing some more looking, they have possibly settled on this one. Fairly decent reviews, and price is somewhat reasonable, though looking at the same model on Amazons site, at the reviews, it appears that at one time mid year last year, it was selling for about $315, that seemed to be a pretty decent deal, but that is long gone, now close to $400, but still a fair value for what you get it appears. Well, if anyone has had this one and has an opinion on it, feel free to chime in, ideally before they buy it.. ;-)

Honestly, go with the regular old Dell 24 or 27 G-Sync monitor. Don't pay more for the "gamer" branded monitor.

As part of my first build, I was focused on getting the most "bang for my buck" and settled on an AOC C24G1 24" 1080p @ 144hz. It supports Freesync and (unofficially) G-Sync and comes factory color calibrated. They're normally $200+ but managed to find a great deal at $150.

There are quite a few other models with higher resolution from AOC and prices seem to be pretty decent for the features and performance you get. I upgraded later to an AOC CU34G2X 34" 1440p 144Hz Ultrawide for $450.

FWIW, I've found "r/buildapcsales" on Reddit to be helpful for finding monitor deals (and other components in general).

There are some budget 1440p 144Hz monitors such as the Samsung Odyssey G5 C27G55TQWN - 27" Curved LED Monitor - WQHD. That one is exactly $300 although I'm pretty late to this thread. There's not a lot of benefit going above 120-165Hz and 1440p is just much better than 1080p while being significantly less taxing than 4k.
