Really appreciate all the positive response to the case guys!

I'd of loved to have had time to do a build-log on this thing because I like those things too.  I just didn't have the time to invest in documenting and photographing all the segments of this build (and there were many).

I considered buying one of the retail open-air benches that several companies offer today.  I just couldn't find a product that suited me, and I have this thing about making my own stuff sometimes to satisfy my creative outlet.  I was also in conversation with DangerDen on a custom 4P Plexiglas case and they were willing to build it.  So, if any of you are DangerDen case lovers, and want to house a 4P with one, contact them...they can do it for a small additional fee.

I also look forward to seeing what others do if you decide to use T-slot in your own build or something else that suits you!

Thanks again for all the replies!

What's the dimensions & what was used for the motherboard tray?
Looks like smoked colored plexiglass maybe?
The more I look at this the more I like it. Me wants one.

Re:Mint-4P photos of my finished case. 2012/09/13 11:19:27 (permalink)
The mobo-tray is 22.5" by 13" which is larger than the 4P Supermicro board.  The 4P mobo is 16.48" long by 13" deep.  I would have loved to use smoked (or black) Plexiglas for the base, but ended up using thin sheet metal that was painted black.  I actually got that sheet metal at Lowes, marked down, open-box.  It was supposed to have been a back-plate accessory for stove.  But, the reason I'd of preferred Plexiglas would be for better rigidity.  I had to add aluminum braces to the sheet metal because it wasn't rigid enough to stand on its own as a base.  Also, my original intent was to have elongated holes with rubber grommets cut into the outside extra space of that sheet metal (for cabling to run through).  Once I began building, I realized that I didn't exactly need those cut-holes because I had room around the outside of the base to drop cables and tie them neatly.  There are so many ways you can go with these things and that is part of the fun.

So you built it to keep your grandsons fingers off the board, but what about out of the fans? They don't look like they have grills to prevent young curious fingers from venturing in. What is green now, might become red

Where did you get the extruded aluminum, and the parts to assemble it?

You need to look closer at my photos then.

Everything in the way of T-slot parts came from McMaster Carr.

Mint - now I get it - that's how much the parts cost!

No problems Barnhart...I'm the same way about reading websites from my phone, so I get that part.

Punchy......yes, I already said it ain't cheap!  My next door neighbor uses the 1" versions of that same product in his Electrical Engineering projects.  I told him that would be a tidy sum for just about any large project using the larger sized versions, but by God it won't go anywhere either.  Embrace the T-slot...it loves you and wants to go home with you!

Offering an enclosed 4p case has been on my "to do" list forever, but as you now know, it wouldn't be cheap.

Thank-you Spotswood and Cudenever!

I've long appreciated your case designs going back to your custom wood cases.  My build wasn't cheap and that's for a variety of reasons that are probably mostly important to me.  I can say without reservation to anyone, that your open-air designs and offerings are an exceptional deal for the price.  If I'd of been able to go open-case, you would have already had an order from me.  You have paved the way in all of the T-slot design, issues, changes and things that took me a lot of time to learn and do on my own.  That is a very valuable part of what you offer with the designs you have already developed.  So, to anyone that is considering an open-case design, save yourself a lot of time and money and go buy one of Spotswood's products that are also customizable from what I've seen.

Thanks again!

It's a piece of art.  Excellent work.  And now the next question:  average ppd?

Thank-you!  That's a pertinent question, especially since the new 8102 Bigadvs seem so elusive.  When I finally finished the case and moved the Supermicro mobo over to it's new home, I had to shut down for awhile to get that done.  Prior to that, my 4P had been on a steady diet of the new 8102 Bigadvs which were averaging 404K per WU.  Since the 8102s would complete in just 15hrs, there were lots of days where I could get (2) of them done in one day for over 800K.  Well, since coming back up after completing the case, I've reverted back to a steady diet of 8101 Bigadvs which take 21hrs to complete and net ~330k per WU.  I went through this very thing when I first got the 4P running (a couple weeks of nothing but 8101s).  So, I'm back in the "8101 barrel" for now, waiting for someone else to turn off or reset their rig!

Seriously though, for anyone that is running multiple wattage hungry rigs for Folding, I'd encourage you do do the math on your electrical costs.  A 4P rig may actually be cheaper (and pay for itself) over time vs the ongoing higher electricity use of multiple rigs.

Ya I liked to cried when I lost the 2nd 8102 I had gotten trying to run GPU client on the SR2. Haven't picked up another since.
Lucky I had changed the command line just after getting the 8102 to -smp instead of -bigadv -smp and caught it causing the loss of work units on the regular smp units. Even changed over to a GTX260 from the GTX480 & still problems GPU folding with Vbox CPU folding & W7 GPU folding. I gave up & only CPU fold on it now.

I was thinking that, as well.  I may have the cash coming up in the spring to get a 4p into action (and free up my current rig for what it was originally built for!).  Your Green Lantern has inspired me!
