Really surprised they would drop support for a CPU they was able to run it but then again as you said people should upgrade.
I kind of feel though that this sucks since I was reading about a guy who fixes old computers and sends them to schools in poor parts of the world. I would rather see a poor community school in another part of the world have an old computer then no computers at all.

Processors without the SSE2 instructions like these recently faced a problem they couldn't install updates anymore. Microsoft was working on a solution but eventually they cancelled this and instead announced that the processors will no longer be supported. https://web.archive.org/w...ows-7-update-kb4088875https://web.archive.org/w...ows-7-update-kb4284826 A Stop error occurs on machines that don't support Streaming Single Instructions Multiple Data (SIMD) Extensions 2 (SSE2).
Microsoft is working on a resolution and will provide an update in an upcoming release. I wouldn't even recommend trying out Windows 7 on a Pentium 3 or 4 machine and atleast use a Core 2 Duo, but I can understand in some places this is not a possibility. Also a fun fact I recently heard, the Pentium 3's actually had better IPC performance than the Pentium 4's and the Pentium 3's have been the basis for the newer Core processors and used some of the Pentium 4's features. I still have Pentiums 1/2/3/4 but they didn't receive anything newer than Windows 98?/ME and XP. The Pentium 2/3's both running Windows ME and still working with their original harddrive and haven't been reïnstalled since a good 15-17~ years ago. (McaFee 1999 anti-virus anyone?  ) Who would've thought with the so much hated Windows ME, personally never had too much issues with it.

I never considered installing 7 on my P3 1.26 chip, I should totally try that out lol. I wonder how it will behave with 512mb of ram with a 1.26 P3 on a 40gb hard drive lol

Still have a Pentium MMX running Windows 95b. I was extremely surprised the hard drive still turned!!
As long as your popular enough, you can get away with anything.

Ha I just booted an old windows 98 machine this week to see if it still runs (bios battery died but system is still ok). Man this thread makes me feel old.

DOS 3.3 was good when it came out

Still a little to soon to be dropping support. Should waiting a while longer. They would be forced to upgrade.

Apparently Spectre and Meltdown do not affect desktop CPUs older than Core 2: https://www.techarp.com/g...wn-spectre-cpu-list/6/
Or they simply didn't test older than Core2, but according to intel anything with speculative execution is susceptible to spectre, that means Pentium Pro/Pentium II and onwards for intel and K5 and onwards for AMD.
