MSI Warns Against Malicious Afterburner Website | TechPowerUp

MSI is informing the public of a malicious software being disguised as the official MSI Afterburner software. The malicious software is being unlawfully hosted on a suspicious website impersonating as MSI's official website with the domain name afterburner-msi.space. MSI has no relation with this website or the aforementioned domain. The fraudulent website imitates MSI's official webpage appearance and design, and offers downloads for MSI's Afterburner. This webpage is hosting software which may contain virus, trojan, keylogger, or other type of malicious program that have been disguised to look like MSI Afterburner. The Public is warned not to download any software from this website!

MSI's official Afterburner website is not compromised and is safe to use. The Afterburner Software download link is currently closed due to routine maintenance. The software will be downloadable soon and you can find the latest version of Afterburner at https://www.msi.com/Landing/afterburner/graphics-cards. MSI is dedicated to providing reliable products that deliver incredible user experiences. As such, we find it our responsibility to protect those who have put their trust into our dedication. We condemn the infringement on our proprietary rights and the damage it has caused to MSI's reputation. Necessary actions to remove the malicious imposter website are underway.

I just checked and the rogue website still appears to be operating. Beware of the rogue website: afterburner-msi.space

I hope authorities worldwide start coming down REALLY hard on these malicious hackers, particularly ones that threaten national infrastructure, although many believe that at that level they are probably nation-state threat actors anyway, so they won't be touched. In this MSI case it shouldn't be that hard to trace the domain name ownership though, and if domain name providers are not doing some sort of due diligence in identifying their clients, then perhaps they should be answerable for misuse of domain names.

Along the same lines, it's possible that it's only a matter of time before crypocurrencies are forced to be traceable or get black listed and effectively shut down - meaning no financial institution will deal with them so you can't cash out, and any banks who don't sign on will suffer strong penalties accordingly.

Yeah the amount of ransomware or other hacks has really increased over the past year it seems.  I think the pipeline ransomware and some of the other recent ones that impact more than just some random company are really going to highlight the threat of this and the efforts will increase to address it.

That pipeline software should have been on a closed system with no external access, but from what I am hearing they were not well protected and had several gaping security holes, which of course were exploited. Businesses cheaping out on IT security is a big problem.

I would always recommend going directly tot he webpage for the company and then finding what you are after. Most websites for a large company are easy to navigate and reduce the risk these kinds of fake sites as they would have to be linked by someone.
