I have been battling this for 2 weeks not realizing what it was, I work in Excel and Visio all day and it's been HORRIBLE.
I actually bought a whole new computer thinking that my system was fubar (any reason to spend money is OK).
I'll uninstall precision :(

Doesn't seem so. I am having problems with Office 2016 when Precision is running. Similar as OP, lagging, freezes and crashes. If I close Precision, all of that goes away.
5.3.10

I just solved the exact same issue thanks to this thread by closing and uninstalling eVGA Precision X.  My OS is Win10 x64 Enterprise.

Thank you for figuring out the issue & solution ricarnuninho!

It appears like it's been solved with the last uptade! Thanks for the solution as I really did not want to uninstall EVGA Precision whatsoever. Though there is still one issue that needs to be solved and seems like I am not alone on that as well: when you boot your windows and launch Chrome, search or any software that you can type, it really slows down to a level that you cannot write but it only does that for 30 seconds or maybe 1 minute. Two or maybe three characters coming from the back.

Could you guys please dig into that as well? Here's another topic related with the problem:

I've the same problem when I use Office 2013 / 2016 or open pdf files. I'm using the 5.3.11 version. Is there any solution?

The EVGA PrecisionX 16 Server may be interfering if it's running also with Precision..Turn off OSD (On-Screen Display) in Precision and see if that fixes it, or add the EXCEL.exe to the EVGA PrecisionX 16 Server exclude list by:

1. Opening the EVGA PrecisionX 16 Server (click tray icon)
2. Click Add
3. Browse to the EXCEL.exe in the Microsoft Office\Office folder
4. Click/Double-click the EXCEL.exe to to add it to the EVGA PrecisionX 16  Server exclude list
5. Click OK

I, too, am having this problem. Bob's solution listed above solved the issue for me. I was on Windows 7, Office 2016, GTX 970 card, 364.72 NVIDIA drivers, Precision X version 5.3.11.

I did want to point out that I had to navigate to the Precision X installed folder in order to find the PrecisionXServer_x64.exe application, in order to add these exceptions.

Additionally, the lag I was experiencing in Excel and Word would happen regardless of what was loaded, even a blank document. It wouldn't happen immediately, but took about 20 to 30 seconds of just sitting there in the Office application, and then everything was slow: minimizing, then restoring the window would take a long time to redraw Excel/Word. Highlighting text or cells, would be very slow. Navigating with the cursor keys was also slow.

I added all the Office apps to the exclusion list.

edit: added software versions

I'm still having this problem, Excel becoming unresponsive.  These are settings that make it worse.  1) having a high pixel refresh 2) using multiple monitors.  3) running VBA code.  It doesn't seem like EVGA has really looked into this problem for 2 years.  I can happily take anyone there through the steps necessary to re-create the problem.  I'd like to get back to 2 monitors.

Also, for what it's worth, the interface to the software may excite a 12 year old, but a professional like me, I just want to find what I need as quickly as possible.  I assume there are many graphics professionals who also wonder why the product is focused only on gamers. It took me 15 (wasted) minutes just to figure out the un-orthodox interface.  Rant over ;)

UPDATE.  6/8/16 I stopped the EVGA Precision software from loading on bootup.  Seems Excel no longer freezes.  Don't know why they can't put in a Microsoft Office friendly "configuration".

I nearly pulled my hair out over this issue. Happened on both my PC's (one a newer i7 with GTX 780, the other a first-gen i7 with GTX 280) with all Office programs - Word, Excel, Outlook, etc. I finally started uninstalling programs one by one and as soon as Precision X went, all returned to normal. Still waiting on a version that is guaranteed to solve this before I start using it again.

Man I am so glad I found this thread...I was pulling my hair out and can't count the number of reinstalls of Excel and Office 2013 and 2016.

I uninstalled Precision and no issues, lockups or slowdowns anymore.

This needs to be fixed or unfortunately I will not be able to use Precision anymore.

Never had this problem and have always used office with precision - waiting for a fix but until then, afraid that MSI afterburner is a better alternative for now

Updated my precision x for when I got my GTX 1070 (up until then i was using a much older precision x ver) and can confirm I am also getting issues with MS Office while precision x is running. Everything is laggy, but as soon as i turn off PXOC, things start to work. Turn it back on, things get laggy.

Bump. I have this same issue with office 2013 and 2016, have not tried older versions. Precision x v5.3.11.
The issue is as described above: After a few seconds of use, the office program quickly goes from normal -> slow ->unusable. The unusable is because the GUI stops updating. Extremely annoying. The issue can be worked around by closing precision x. As soon as it is turned back on the issue returns.

Despi & ricarnuninho  Why do you have to run Precision Xxx while you are in Excel?

Of course it is not necessary to run for excel. Just as obvious is that constantly closing and reopening a program would quickly get annoying. But that is what everyone with this issue is forced to do.

It is a work around, not a solution.

This is why I have a Gaming Computer and a Work Computer, as no corporate company would allow games so you might think about also doing the same. Think about the cost of you computer being hacked while gaming and dumping your hard drives to an unknown location.

Well, just as an update, I run EVGA Precision X OC v6.0.6 and I can confirm the same bug as described above with Office 2013 (Word, Excell, you name it ...) and Windows 10.
Obviously it's not a hardware problem, but it seems strange that they never fixed this issue.

The problem is somehow related to the OSD, as soon as I get the slow behavior I can see the OSD overlay on the Excell file.

As a side note, uninstalling Precision and rebooting solves the problem.
I would like to know has anyone found a workaround?

The workaround is to turn off precision x/precision x server before opening excel.

I actually bought new RAM modules before figuring out the root of this problem.

It is ridiculous that EVGA forces to either choose Afterburner or shut down Office/Precision X.
Office has been part of my PC for over 20 years. By choosing not to fix it, EVGA is only moving its customers to MSI.

The GPU is for video editing and rendering (work). I only want Office for invoices and stuff (do not want a third machine or my tiny smart phone for it).
