As long as they fit in the slot (correct key and length) they should work. Motherboard validation is only done when the m.2 manufacturer sends a sample to the motherboard manufacturer to test that it works.

As long as you buy reputable brands from reputable sellers, the m.2 should work. Samsung, western digital, Intel, sabrent, and numerous other companies are out there. Look at the specs and think with your wallet.

I've always leaned towards Samsung SSD, especially the Pro versions

However, my newest 5950X Rig with PCIe 4.0 ..... 1TB WD Black SN850 for my M.2 Boot drive (faster in many benchmarks, see link below)

Honestly Samsung drives are going to be really good options as are the WD Black. Keep in mind the Z490 will have two M.2 slots but one of them is shared with one of the PCI-E slots if I remember right. It also doesn't really matter that much for speed between the name brands if you are mostly using it for gaming. You are highly unlikely to personally notice a big difference since almost everything will open in the blink of an eye even on an old SATA SSD that is 1/5th the speed of the lower end M.2. Because of this I would look more at size than speed with 2TB now being pretty reasonable at around $200-225 if that is outside the budget 1TB is also good but 500GB and 250GB I would personally stay away from unless the budget is super tight. The Z490 wouldn't even really make use of some of the high speeds now offered because it's only PCI-E 3.0 so storage would be more important for that reason anyway. I have also noticed that modern M.2 are about the same price as the last generation but it's always worth comparing.

Because of the lack of PCIe 4.0 I would have said the 970 EVO Plus 2TB would be a better option than the faster 980 Pro. The 2TB is more at about the cost of a new game in price difference but I feel more storage is better than speeds the system can't use.
