No EVGA, so if I buy one I guess its a Galax HOF.

Has GALAX announced a 4090 HOF? When the 3090ti Launched, GALAX immediately launched the 3090ti HOF. So far GALAX hasn’t announced a 4090 HOF that I can find.

Did you try a 600w vbios yet?

Now I'm getting confused again.
I thought that if you populate all 4 8-pin connectors on the Nvidia adapter that the card could be made to reach 600W with the current bios.
I thought 2 of the youtubers said that.
Or was it just theoretical?

That is correct, but the suprim has a vbios limit of 520w vs 600 on the fe.

Wouldn’t that be nice? Sadly no. Don’t update it. You’ll most likely brick one of your vbios doing so.

Why did one reviewer show card draw ~560w?  (need to find it later)

I saw many reviews with the SuprimX capping around 520w, but one review had a draw around 560w.  Are there different review boards circulating?  Or more importantly, what was shipped with the retail board?

I don't know if I want to spend extra for the Strix or Aorus just for the 600w power cap.  I like the looks and design features of the SuprimX and Aorus, but the actual review performance differences are minimal even when OC'd.  It almost appears like the AIBs had to pay nVidia more to get higher power limit caps, thus the higher MAP pricing.    (and it's all marketing since it's deminishing returns)  Since the boards are voltage limited, there's not much you can do without voiding warranty and modding.

I have not seen more than 522w, what is shown in reviews may be a peak, maximum tdp 520w.

So far I haven't seen my card top 480w and this is with the core at 3Ghz. The reason I'm capped is reporting VRel meaning I'm voltage limited I have yet to see Pwr as my perf cap reason in GPUZ.

I haven't really benchmarked the card yet, just some quick gaming when it came in today in Spider Man and Cyberpunk mostly to check out the DLSS3 gimmick. WHen I get more time tomorrow I'll run it through the gauntlet of tests. I'm also only running the memory with a +500Mhz offset so far.

Hmm so I think I found out why I'm "only" seeing about 480w. It seems this card only allows me to add 7% more power to the default 100%. So with some simple math the base is 450w add 7% to that and we get 481.5w maximum. Though I still do not see Pwr as my perf cap reason in GPUZ, I'm seeing VRel meaning I'm still voltage limited and not by the available wattage. I tried using the included 3 8pin to 16pin adapter and with that I cannot move the power limit past 100% which is expected. Using my PSUs included 16pin cable (I'm using a MSI MPG A1000G 1000w PSU which is ATX 3.0 and PCIe 5.0 ready) and I can then move the slider to 107%.

Seems MSI capped this card to 480w limit. Not really a big deal I guess since I'm still able to hit 3Ghz core like all the other RTX 4090 reviews I've seen. Though I may try flashing one of the cards BIOS to a higher limit once NVFlash is updated to work with the 40 series cards just to see what happens.

Will be curious what you think of the card. Since I’d put a block on it does it look like it would be pretty standard to pull the cooler off?  Or is it glued etc with hidden screws?  I’ve never actually had to swap on a block before. My 2080S was a hydrocopper sku.

Card seems like it wouldn't be very hard at all to remove the cooler. Just 4 screws holding the main leaf-spring GPU bracket and a handful of smaller screws holding the backplate on. I haven't taken it apart yet though so I don't know if there are any other screws holding the heatsink to the PCB under the backplate or if the screws holding the backplate on go through the PCB and make contact into the heatsink. At any rate the card seems very easy to take apart. I'm planning on putting a block on it too but there aren't any available yet for this card that I can find.

The reviewers are saying that when the adapter has only 3 8-pin connectors the card will limit the power to 450W.
I don't understand. That should not be necessary. Maybe it's a worst case scenario thing?
3 8-pins allows for sufficient redundancy to get to 600W.

This card has a limit of 480w in the BIOS I don't know what about that you don't understand? Looking at some other card vendor BIOS they also have the same 480w limit namely the Zotac Trinity, PNY Verto, and the Gigabyte Windforce. I'm assuming these are using the Nvidia reference board design as they too only come with a 3 8pin adapter like my MSI Gaming Trio did. Keep in mind the Nvidia FE card is NOT a reference board design card, NVidia is using their own custom board design on their FE cards just like they did with the 30 series.

Yes, as I stated when I used the 3 way adapter I could not move the power slider past 100% which is 450w, when I use my PSU's native 16pin PCIe adapter I'm able to slide it to 107%. Not all cards have a BIOS that allows 600w power draw. The MSI Suprim X has a 520w limit, the water cooled variant has a 530w limit, the Zotac AMP Extreme has a 495w limit, the Colorful Vulcan OC has a 550w limit and the Palit Gamerock OC has a 500w limit.

The part I don't understand is why they designed the card to limit power with only 3 8-pins.

Because they can't account for every PSU's cable gauge and current capacity they go with the official rating of 150w per 8 pin cable that they are standardized to. So 150w x 3 = 450w. So I'm assuming the Nvidia reference board design only calls for 450w so they can achieve that with a 3 8pin adapter which they include in the box for cards using the reference PCB.

I think the AIBs needs to pay nVidia to sell boards with higher power limits.  Then, the same chip can be tiered into different performance and pricing SKUs.  EVGA did it with Black, FTW3, FTW3 Ultra, Kingpin had different base boost clocks and different power limits.  Only the Kingpin was special and allowed practically unlimited power(from Vince) and voltage tweaks.  But, you paid the price and could only take advantage with extreme cooling.  AC and chill water could only go so far.  I'd like to see how the 40 Series works out with better cooling and eventually, LN2.

They don't have to pay them, they do however have to invest their own R&D into designing a PCB that can deliver beyond what Nvidia's reference board design calls for though. Nvidia provides all board partners with a reference design schematic for a PCB that will effectively run the GPU without issue. If a board partner wants to overbuild their PCB that's on them. So they are "paying" per se, but not directly to Nvidia.

No EVGA, so if I buy one I guess its a Galax HOF.

Has GALAX announced a 4090 HOF? When the 3090ti Launched, GALAX immediately launched the 3090ti HOF. So far GALAX hasn’t announced a 4090 HOF that I can find.

I was told it will be a November 2022 launch.

I may end up getting a MSI card and an Elmor EVC instead of the Galax card depending on the HOF's VRM design.

what cooling are you using for this? that's much much higher than my card would pass out of the box w the AIO. did you manage to get the 600W vbios flashed?

Derbauer did the EVC on the Strix and ran into the power limit.  Now he has shunt.  Wonder if an AIB will do a (2) 12v power like the KP.
