My grandmother's house took a hit from lightning, coming in through the telephone line and her i7-860 PC did not survive. I scrounged up some spare parts this evening and came up with
THIS Q6600 build which would serve her usage no problem. I'll need to find some DDR2 since hers didn't survive and those 4 sticks are 2 1GB(512x2) kits and thought I'd see about upgrading the CPU. Oddly the GTX 570 did survive but not sure if I'll chance swapping it in. My old Q6600 never OC'd well and needs a good chuck of VCORE to hit 3.0.
Like I said, as it sits now it would be ok for her. I'd love to say she's a simple user that just does Facebook, email and the occasional office document. However a few years ago someone showed her the basics of Photoshop which lead to her buying multiple Photoshop for Dummies type books and she'll happily spend hours just doodling on an image she snapped. That's why I'd like to see about getting her a CPU that will go over 3ghz.
A buddy is fairly sure he has a
x5842 at work but he thought I might not be able to overclock it on a 780i board due to a lack of the right voltage adjustments. I was thinking Q9550/9650 for ~$30 if he's correct about the
5842. I'm happy to entertain other ideas.
edit: Typo x5482 but I'm guessing you already saw through that.
