Hi,
I've got an Intel X58 ATX motherboard with a Nvidia GTX 970. I am wanting to step up and install a EVGA GTX 980 Ti Classified. But I am not sure what drivers I should install. I have no experience with the EVGA Graphic cards or what software is available for them. I have been searching this forum for hours/days and read a lot of scary things. There is a ton of information but I can't tell if it pertains to my situation or how to go about using it. My system is Windows 7 running an Intel 980X 6 core CPU. I only use it to play off-line games and I don't plan on playing any games newer than say GTA 5. I need a detailed step by step guide, but haven't found one. The user guide that came with the 980 in too generic and lacking. I'm asking for what I need to get and what I need to do.

Also please don't think because this is my 1st post on "EVGA", I'm new to computers as I've been an owner/techey with them since 1992. I just can't keep up with it anymore. Need help. Thanks.

For a squeaky clean install, grab and extract Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU)..Then grab the  latest NVIDIA graphics driver here..Then start Windows in Safe Mode and run DDU choosing the "Clean and shutdown (For installing a new graphics card)" launch option..After shutdown, swap out the card..Then boot into Windows..Then install the latest NVIDIA graphics driver..When installing the driver, you can choose to perform a Custom (Advanced) install selecting only the driver components you need (typically only the graphics driver along with PhysX) and not install components you may not need/want such as 3D Vision drivers, GeForce Experience and other stuff.

Or just swap out the card and it'll take care of itself.

Ok, I downloaded DDU. Thanks for your help. I need to copy DDU over to my gaming rig and I still need to download the driver. But EVGA included a driver with the card, how do I know which driver to use? It's windows 7 and I don't plan on playing newer games on it.
    Thanks again

The latest driver is 390.65, just use the service link from above and choose drivers and BIOS.  From there you can download the drivers.

While the included NVIDIA graphics driver on the install CD will work, drivers are constantly being updated to address issues and add enhancements..Get the latest from NVIDIA or EVGA in the Download Center, they are the same, but EVGA lags a little behind NVIDIA in making the latest driver available for download..Older drivers do work better for some people than new/newer ones do, sometimes..That also goes for included software (EVGA Precision XOC) only from EVGA in the Software Downloads, you can get the latest version there.

All you need is the nvidia display driver to get the card up and working. Search GeForce drivers and click the first link. Select your card or allow the website to automatically find your card. The drivers for the 980ti and 970 might not actually be different, and you may already have the right drivers.

If you arent going to play newer games, I would use this driver:
    365.19-desktop-win8-win7-winvista-64bit-international-whql.exe

It is the LAST driver for the 900 series and lower cards, and then came the drivers with the 1000 series, and they seem to have messed up a lot of peoples rigs.

My opinion, on what I have seen, and my friends rigs from win7 to win 10, all had some sort of issue with the drivers that came from the 1000 series to the latest drivers available now.

ok, I just downloaded the 365.19 driver. That one sounds like it's as new as I will ever need on my old rig (2011). I want to stay as light as I can. I can always upgrade later if I want to. I have also downloaded 378.92 & 390.65 just to have on hand.

Thanks for all the help and hope I can return the favor someday.
I have read a few threads on this forum about people having compatibility problems and things on their computer change or don't work correctly anymore due to updating software or installing software that is designed to run on a multitude of OS's from XP, Vista, 7, 8, and windows 10. Some people even have had their graphics card burn up, catch fire.
I have six different computers. Each is setup within their limits. All the hardware & software in each computer was built close to the same year or generation and is only compatible with certain specific components, not a universal one size fits all. This is just my way of keeping things simple. It saves me time & money as I never have to trouble shoot, update, or fix a bug in the computer.
So that is why I would rather use a video driver that is the same generation as my graphics card, and not push it to it's limits with over clocking or a game with the settings maxed.

    Yeah, thats cool.
I have only seen a few times where nvidia messed up going from 1 gen to the next, but it is getting more frequent it seems like.
Maybe they need to sell more cards to stay afloat, now that their drivers are just as bad as AMD's?
    Shrug.

I'm tryin to figure out what PCI-E power cables to use on a GTX 980 Ti and which one of the two connections on the graphics card to use, or do I use both?
The PSU has two power leads for graphics cards. As shown in picture each one has a 6-pin & a 6+2-pin.

The graphics card has two 8-pin connections as shown in this photo.

I also have two 6-pin to 8-pin adapters.

I am using just one GTX 980 Ti graphics card. And the "user guide" that came with the card is a waste of a good tree. It is not specific to this graphics card and is very basicly general.
Do I need to use an 8-pin cable in each one of the two connectors? Or one 6-pin & 6+2-pin?

Here is what the "user guide" says:
"If your card is equipped with a supplemental power adapter"
"Your card may require one or more 6 or 8 pin PCI-E supplemental power connector"
What? They don't know what the card they sold me is equipped with? LOL

Use two of the 6+2 ends for the card.  One from the blue cable the other from the yellow.  The connections are keyed so they only fit one way.

so both 8-pin connectors on the card should be used?
I was thinking that the reason for two cables from the PSU was if you had two cards.

The card will not work unless both connections are plugged in.

    I really appreciate your help.
I'm only going to install and use one card for now, but Is it different for 2 cards in SLI ?
Because I saw another Area 51 same exact model as mine with two GTX 980 Ti cards in SLI and they had one 8-pin adapter plugged into each card. It was an adapter from the stock 6-pin/6+2-pin PSU lead to 8-pin, one in each card. Did they have it wrong?

    Use both cables.
Dont use just 1 cable for both connectors.

As for sli, do you mean they had 4pin molex to 6/8pin connector?
If so, thats better than using an 8pin + the extra 6pin on the same cable. I would stay away from that 6pin + 8pin IF possible.
If not, then use it if you have to as a last resort.
And, it kind of depends on if you have a single 12v rail, or multiple 12v rails. If multiple, you may Have to use that cable, you may not.

Yeah that's the driver I installed. I only installed the driver not the other options, seams to be working fine. But the card was pretty warm and the fans did Not turn on, so I don't know if that's normal.

They were using two adapters exactly like these.

    Plugged into these PSU leads.

And they had an SLI bridge between the two cards.

That's normal the fan doesn't kick in until a certain temperature has been reached.

    Yeah.
If you want, you can install msi afterburner, and set a custom fan profile, for better temps.

Yeah I'd like to do that, thanks. the fan noise won't bother me none. heck I won't even hear it over the front case fan. the computer is an Area 51 and I don't know how them aliens do it but that fan moves a TON of air. The sensors readout at 24°C.
