Im assuming just replacing the motherboard, if that in fact is the reason its dead would be hard to find or just too expensive at this point ? Do u think the video card is dead too ? you are starting to scare me

It's impossible to say what's going on with the GPU at this point, until it can be tested in a working system.  But it doesn't look good.

Your current LGA2011 CPU is out of date, you're not going to be able to get a new MB from a reputable vendor.  That means paying an inflated price from a shady vendor or used or NOS from ebay.  Though you have to figure that even if the CPU or ram were bad, they wouldn't stop the MB from trying to post.

I can't say what's causing the problem at this point.

I guess i should start doing some research, but the suggestions you sent over Kevin look pretty good. I agree trying to replace the MB is not an option at this point. Im assuming the video card if bad would be covered under warranty since its a week old ? Im also thinking bringing the computer to Microcenter to have it tested out since it looks like I've reached the end of the line.

Letting microcenter test it is probably a good idea.

Did you try the old GPU in the 1st PCIe slot?

There are no on board graphics.  Does anyone know if the board won't power up without a GPU installed?

I never tried it without the GPU and didn’t try the old one. Now unfortunately I’m driving up to Microcenter as we speak to get it tested out

At this point almost resound to the fact that I will need to start a new build. My main concern now is the GPU, considering it cost more than everything else combined.

Sounds good!

Well, if you never tested it without removing the new gpu, it's probably the new gpu.

I never even considered a bad gpu would render the whole computer DOA, guess I should of tried that before making my trek.

If a GPU defect causes its power to be shorted, the PSU won't turn on because of overcurrent protection.

Sorry Rain, I didn't take any pics before i brought it in. I am definitely regretting not testing it without the new gpu or with old one, but after 4 days of of working on it i became overly frustrated. And now I've spent today researching parts to build a new system in case the motherboard is DOA on this one. I appreciate all the help you guys have offered over the past few weeks, you are the best !!!!!

Hi Guys, hope everyone had a Happy New Year, Well I finally heard back on the computer and initial diagnosis is the PSU and GPU are both good. That’s the good news, bad news in order to test the motherboard and CPU, they need to drain and disassemble the cooling system to the cost of $450. Seems like a lot of money to just get them tested and if one or both are bad, additional costs to replace 6 year old parts. Question is what do you guys think the chances are it’s either the MB or CPU, and do you think it’s time to cut my loses and use the $450 instead on the start to build a new computer considering I have a PSU, GPU and a 1 TB M2 drive.

IMO I'd put it towards a new system at this point.  Otherwise you're paying them $450 to tell you something is probably bad and then you still have to either replace what's bad somehow, or build a new system anyway.

Wow that's crazy. I'm curious how they were able to test the GPU without removing it but can't say if the cpu/ram/MB combo is good or not.  I also don't understand how the MB/CPU can't be removed by just taking the CPU block off and GPU out of the way, looking at your pics again I don't see why it can't just be fished out with the loop intact.

IMHO neither the MB or CPU are worth replacing if one of the two is bad.  I kind of doubt the ram is stopping the machine from powering up, who knows, but that's easy to test.

Like I posted earlier in the thread, microcenter will sell you a 9600K, good MB and ram for under $500.

Re: Looking for Video Card to upgrade my system 2020/01/07 18:32:41 (permalink)
They said they put in a different GPU and got the same results as mine, so I’m assuming that’s how they ruled out it’s the GPU. Also I guess by the time they got to test it today, it actually booted up and ran for a while before it crapped out and then it went through the same cycle of booting with no video signal and then completely dead. I asked the guy your exact question about just temporarily removing the water block and he said they can’t because in case a hose becomes loose they can’t risk a leak, guess that’s understandable, I just can’t justify $450 to drain and then refill it.

I think I’m gonna bring it back home tomorrow and just double check the GPU by actually removing it and putting the old one in and if that’s not it, I’ll start the process of a new build.

Hmmmmm.....if they kept your card installed while testing, Ty_ger07's comment above that it's the GPU causing a short applies, intermittent though.   If they pulled the card out of the MB pcie slot, unplugged the power cables and used another GPU, then it's obviously the mb/cpu/ram combo.  I'd check exactly what they did with their test GPU.

Your full swap of GPU will confirm.

Hi Guys, I did a full swap of the GPU this morning and so far the computer has been running for about 2 hours, I now have my son playing some games and streaming to test it out. This computer has me beyond confused, depending on if it actually continues to perform, which I will keep you guys updated on, do you think it’s a faulty video card all along ? Or is it possible that the card is too much for the system. Want to rule everything out before I contact EVGA about the card. Thanks again guys !!!!!!

UPDATE - Computer has been running constantly with game play and video steaming for close to 8 hours straight....I almost feel its safe to say it was the video card

You need to RMA the 2080 asap.  IIRC there is a one month window where they will send you a new card, as opposed to a refurb, but I think you're already out of that window.

Well after running for a almost 13 hours yesterday without issue, this morning it’s completely dead again. I’m at a complete loss, I guess it’s not the video card after all, question is what could it be, would a bad motherboard or CPU have this type of behavior ? Or could it be something else.

Just disconnected the power switch from the motherboard and trie to hard start it by touching both pins with a screwdriver, no luck. thinking it has to be the motherboard

If you are wanting to upgrade the GPU then look in to some B stock gpu`s.
price are lower then stock new .
you can get a great deal on some nice GPU`s there ..

https://www.evga.com/products/ProductList.aspx?type=8&family=GeForce+10+Series+Family

https://www.evga.com/products/ProductList.aspx?type=8&family=GeForce+16+Series+Family

https://www.evga.com/products/ProductList.aspx?type=8&family=GeForce+20+Series+Family

but if you are after a new GPU, then any brand is a good one, just depends on the price you are wanting to spend out..
as for 32gb ram, you gain no extra benifit with it.  stick with 16gb, if you are gaming, if you are going to do any type of editing, sure go with 32gb ..

thats your old system and now its your 12 year olds system ?

Is that what i read ..
if i read it right , honestly if they system is having issue`s and you cant figure it out by replacing the video card .
then look into a new motherboard, or just rebuild the system as a whole..
part it out and grab you some B stock from evga..
EVGA Z170 FTW, 140-SS-E177-RX, LGA-1151 with DDR4, HDMI, DP, SATA 6Gb/s, Intel Motherboard
Warranty: 1 Year
P/N: 140-SS-E177-RX
was: $179.99
Instant Rebate: -$80.00
now: $99.99
scroll about 16/17 items down that board is there ..
https://www.evga.com/products/ProductList.aspx?type=8
listing the old parts on ebay might net you enuff to build him/her a new system .. keeping the case and power supply .

that if i read your comments and  post correctly ..

Correct it’s his system that I got from a friend. Yep, long story short it’s something wrong with it besides the video card. Been a 3 week diagnostic nightmare for sure. I plan on going today or tomorrow to micro center and just price out parts to build a new system. That motherboard would of been a good start but it’s already back up to $179.99, I was able to get a good deal on 850 watt PS from EVGA. I can’t see trying to replace the parts in this System considering their age (2013)

I'd try another hard drive if you have anything around to use. SSD's have a limited amount of read/write before failure... Depends on how much you've used it for those 7 years, but i'd say that's pretty close to the life expectancy of a SSD from 2013.

You think that a bad drive could cause the computer to go completely dead ? I will try another drive to see what happens
