First off, this is my first EVGA purchase ever. So far I'm very happy, but I had a couple questions concerning the various model numbers of the company's 970s.

I bought my card (SSC GTX 970 ACX 2.0) today at Best Buy. I read online before I bought it that the 29XX models didn't have the memory and mosfet cooling plate, but the refreshed 39XX models do--more specifically the 04G-P4-3975-KR . So I looked up the model number for the version Best Buy sells and it's 04G-P4-3979-KB so I think, "It's a 39XX! It must be the refreshed 970 just with a Best Buy exclusive SKU!"

Wrong.

From what I can tell by examining and comparing the cooler heatpipe layout and power connectors of all EVGA's 970 models, the Best Buy 970 appears to be the first revision of the EVGA GTX 970 SSC or even a downclocked FTW. There's no mem/mosfet plate, dual 6-pin instead of 6- and 8-pin connectors, only one DisplayPort, and the heatpipes poking out at the back (front?) of the card are silver instead of the copper of the refreshed version.

So I guess my question is: is my 04G-P4-3979-KB really just a 04G-P4-2975-KR in 39XX disguise? And how much does the lack of the mem/mosfet plate affect overclockability and longevity? Should I return my Best Buy card and buy a for sure refreshed 970 with the cooling plate etc.?

Thanks in advance for the help!

EDIT: Weird, my links didn't show up. Updated with plain text model numbers.

so here is your GPU^^

when i compare the length to the new ftw+ then I see that it is shorter so it is also the older revision.

you should be able to step up to the newer ssc+ for just s&h which is not bad if you live in the states.

Awesome! Thank you VERY much. Do you recommend stepping up? Does the optimized power target and memory/mosfet cooling plate make a tangible difference in overclockability and longevity?

Also, when it asks for your invoice for the step up program, that's just my Best Buy receipt correct?

I don't know that I'll be upgrading the card afterall--with some slight tweaking, I've been able to achieve a stable overclock of 1.5GHz core and 7.6GHz memory. 3Dmark Firestrike places my card (12979 GPU score) in very close proximity to a reference GTX 980 (13005 GPU score) so I am very happy.

Far Cry 4 on Ultra with everything turned on (except Nvidia Fur) along with Nvidia Godrays and Fog I get 70fps average at 1080p.

BF4 Ultra (4xMSAA, HBAO+) 64 person Multiplayer sees 90fps average.

Dying Light maxed out with view distance right in the middle finally sees 60fps average.

All in all, a HUGE improvement over my outgoing Asus DCUII GTX 760 SLI setup that struggled with these new-gen games and their increased VRAM requirements.

1) If you like the card and want/need even more performance you could step up after up to 90 days of your purchase date (check your EVGA account).
2) Yes, the improved features of the revised card definitely give you more headroom for overclocking. They also keep the card cooler and reduce/eliminate coil whine.
3) Yep, it's the BB receipt.

Wait till you step up from 1080p and really see the difference
