The suit—first filed in 2015—alleges that Facebook’s photo-tagging feature violates Illinois’ Biometric Information Privacy Act ( BIPA), which forbids collection of identifiable biometric data without a person’s explicit consent. Link

Looks like Facebook needs to revamp its legal council.

Good. I hope it destroys FB and anything like it. They have way over stepped there bounds with data and not disclosing to your average pc user how sinister there service truly is. They even wanted to start joining your health and medical data to its databases which besides the privacy and confidentiality laws being breached is just horrifying on so many levels. That's on top of employers and apartment rental companies looking up your profile to decide whether your a quality human being. Normally I'd say well we the tech savvy have been warning people not to use FB or anything like it and if you have oh well for you, but now I think it's our duty as the more informed to see what this and help destroy these apps and help the average person from getting caught up in this. There is nothing good that will come out of a private company having this kind of data and being able to circumvent many laws because they are private and not a govt entity, but the govt sure does like to do business with them.

Maybe so, but that needs to be clearly defined who, what and where your data is going/being used by-for and you need to be given a opt in/out chance. You opt out you lose features, that's all. Data mining is certainly not necessary to keep an app free, no matter the platform.

Opt out, deactivate your account. You chose to opt in when you created your account. Now you can choose to opt out by deactivating. Hopefully they will get busted for any shady stuff they do in between, but don't act like you are helpless. I deactivated my Facebook account approximately 2 years ago. I don't feel like I am missing anything. As others have reported, I actually felt happier not occupying my thoughts with all the exploits of all my "friends".

It's designed that way and further obfuscated by legalize in which common term definitions don't mean what a consumer thinks it means but rather some liar called a lawyer deems necessary at any given point. So yeah, the whole thing is a sham. Social media is cancer. It's entire purpose is for cleverly deceptive advertising and amassing data on consumers. It's data brokers on roids and even if you don't consent they'll spy on you anyway, get caught, and suffer no consequences. That sums up just about every mobile application these days.

My guess is if it goes to court Facebook will win. If they decide they will lose they will settle out of court for a few million.

Social media is for morons and attention whores. Like I need to know every time someone needs to take a dump or see a picture of someone's ugly child when it smiles after poking a dogs anal cavity. That's right, your children are only cute to YOU. Because they're YOURS. That being said, it's not Facebook's fault that there is so much blatant stupidity on such sites. Selfies, duck faces, gangster poses, bullying...There's so much more to list but work is getting in the way. People are too absorbed in acting like buffoons to realize what is actually happening. Although I have no love for Zuckerberg I have to respect the way he took advantage of human nature to make money. I mean...did people really not see this coming? Jesus, what am I saying. Of course they didn't. They're too busy with their vanity to recognize a corporations intent. They don't protect themselves because they expect others to always do it for them. When they realize they've been betrayed they, once again, expect OTHERS to file and win lawsuits on their behalf. People will use these sites because they're free, spread their inane garbage then cry when they're told that their personal information has been used to track their migrating patterns to ensure they're not a threat, or figure out that they secretly want Hillary Clinton to be president because she has that liberal qualification of being a female and that's good enough regardless of her past, and if you say otherwise you're a racist. So the solution is to sue Facebook? Why don't you just stop using Facebook, you dilettantes? Take from this what you want, I really don't care. I'm just saying what needs to be said because I have the balls to say it in what is regarded as a sheltered, politically correct environment which censors the truth to protect individual "feelings". But I will say it again. You need to see things like this coming. But you don't because you're too busy encouraging your naivete. Too much responsibility has been taken off the individual so I have no remorse for anyone who has been wronged by something like Facebook. But people will never stop using it because what platform will allow them to present their selfies to the world? Yeah...Welcome to Earth.

Pfft...Then stop shoving ads in my face. They can make money without data mining. if you don't think so, you're naive but ok Edit: No, they don't need to "tailor" ads to people...they can sell advert space....the ...how many? 1 billion people? will see it..those that are interested will click..those that aren't won't.. they don't need to data mine.
