I think it is worthwhile as well as enjoyable. I've been water cooling for over ten years on both my wife's and my system. It does require more maintenance but it is not onerous at all.
Cost is a factor, but you can start with soft tubing and barb fittings which are not very expensive. One thing I would advise is to use quality components (fittings, reservoirs, pumps, etc.) and not the cheapest you can find. Several companies make kits to help you get started, e.g. Corsair, EK, and others, and this possibly is a good way to begin.
Just be meticulous in your build, have a thought out plan, take your time, and recheck everything you do. They are plenty of resources available to help you.
