Hey guys!

So, I currently have a Samsung 860 Pro Sata III SSD. I was wondering, is it really worth upgrading to a Samsung 970 Evo NVMe M.2 SSD? I'm mostly just a gamer, and the games I play are Civilization VI and Final Fantasy XV.

Thanks very much,

Onyx

I noticed a huge difference in bootup times after switching to a z370 mb from the x99 one that broke. It might have had something to do with the x99 bios slowing things down through.

It would be hard to notice a difference while gaming. The real world testing i have seen, it only shows like 1-2 seconds difference (if that) while loading into games. M.2 NVMe drives are better for large file transfers.

If i was in the market for a new SSD and had a budget for m.2 NVMe, i would do it.

    I would also say no.
Its not worth the hassle for one, and you can get 'like' performance out of a GOOD, quality, ssd, with none of the hassle.
If you do go m.2, I would recommend using an adapter to pcie.

For console ports like Final Fantasy XV I would say not really. It's because consoles are using slow laptop hard drives and made to hide most of the loading time. It might start the initial load time for the game though and possibly anytime it has to load a save file but the between level time won't really improve very much.

What will improve though is the overall speed of the computer outside of gaming. Programs will load faster and multitasking will be improved. I personally have a SATA SSD that I load games onto and then I have a M.2 drive I run Windows and my programs off of. Of course when I got my drive prices where a lot higher then they are now. Now I am even thinking about upgrading away from the HDD I keep for my picture storage since a SSD would be nice to use.

For general use?  No.  Not at all.   I would only consider it if you were upgrading the drive for other reasons, like for higher capacity or wanting a smaller system.

Transfer speeds look good on paper, but In practical terms it's only 1% to 5% faster than a regular SSD.  You would barely even notice a difference.
