Just curious the PSU I got while nice not a fan of the coil whine, so thinking of snagging a EVGA SuperNOVA 850 G5, 80 Plus Gold 850W, Fully Modular 220-G5-0850-X1. Wondering if I will get any overclocking out of my I9 10900KF and once my stepup one day completes an EVGA RTX 3080 FTW3 Ultra.  So figured I would ask here.

Or should I go with something in the 1000-1200w flavor?

NO, but on two other systems I get coil whine from both the psu & cards during most heavy gaming....

1) Evga platinum 750W &  Evga 2080 Super

You have a 3080? Oh you do, just not an EVGA. Be happy you got one man people been struggling to get anything they can get their hands on.

Still need to find a good PSU for an overclocked I9 10900kf and a 3080 FTW3 Ultra...  =/

FYI - anything over 750-800 W is also near impossible to buy  ( due to cryptominer farms ) .
Good luck finding anything from a reputable manufacturer in 1000 W or up .

I have found a few sadly, scalper prices. Still looking for what PSU will let me oc my i9 10900KF and a 3080 when I get it. Reduced to not squeel at me at all or a little during overclocking and not die, still able to hold its efficiency rating not exceeding it while overclocked.

My Corsair HX1200 was recalled so in the interim to tide me over, I picked up a 850w EVGA PSU from best buy GQ series 210-GQ-0850-V1 for $160.00 while I wait for my new PSU to be sent.

I'm using it with a KP 3090 and OC'd i9-9900k on a FTW Z390 MB and it is working great. I had no coil whine with the HX1200 and none with the 850w either. Even when consistently pulling 600w from the wall during long gaming sessions, it is quiet and performing fine. I did lower my previous set GPU OC's as a precaution though.

I greatly prefer the thinner cabling of the 850 GQ and the smaller size. It fits much better in my case.

Those seem to be sold out on EVGA.com, was looking at a few PSU's the Gigabyte Aorus 850w gold, both EVGA 850w the EVGA SuperNOVA 850 G+ P/N: 120-GP-0850-X1 and the EVGA SuperNOVA 850 G5 P/N: 220-G5-0850-X1. Or wondering if my GIGABYTE GP-P850GM 80 PLUS GOLD is up for the task with my setup and plans to overclock once my stepup 3080 one day goes though. Since Johnny Guru is no longer a thing just have this page to go off of...

Most of the PSU reviews these days are not in detail like Johnny Guru had done. Pretty much left with owner reviews of Do nOt bUY THIis!!! Without any real substance behind it. Along with this list that does not have everything nor goes into any great depth...

Best Buy has them in stock online and for some stores locally. I just picked mine up at our local Best Buy.

I thought Johnny Guru was hired by Corsair. That would put a big question mark on impartiality if he were to continue to review a wide swath of PSUs.

You will always find people either dumping all over certain PSUs or fawning over other brands/models with many not having either used both or in limited fashion or using their anecdotal evidence to generalize. Use a company's products till they give you a reason not to. I've been using EVGA products since 2005 when I bought one of their 7800GTX's. They haven't given me a reason to stop using them yet.

Yeah he works for Corsair now so no more reviews. Had an old EVGA 750w gold go out on me within the first year of ownership about 8 years ago killed a mouse”during its firmware update”, some ram and a gpu. And one more go bad a long time ago 2007-08 from tiger direct. So have been paranoid since. Without good reviews out there it’s a bit frustrating.

Basically, any of our current fully modular gold-rated power supplies would give you headroom.  G5 and GP are both solid models, and 850W will be enough for a 3080 FTW3 Ultra, even if you heavily overclock both.  G5 is the current flagship, and actually performs a bit more efficiently and stable than the G3 power supplies.

not sure where to put this and I know this  particular thread is from earlier this year.  But since it's on the topic of EVGA G5 850 psu,  I was wondering why my psu has such coil whine coming from it. This is my first time using Gold.  previous years (10+ years) I've always used Platinum series from EVGA and never had an issue.  In fact, my son's computer is currently using a P2 850.  I've noticed a noise coming from my computer but never could pin point it until today.  Opened up the case and listened to the psu and boy, it was loud.  Is that normal?  Will is cease to function at some point?   I'm thinking about going back to a P2 series.  Only reason I changed it out is because the previous psu was a P2 650, and with my new EVGA 3070 ti FTW, I knew that I would need more psu power, especially with a R9 3900xt with 32gb RAM.  Please help.  Don't want my gpu going out (too hard to get one and too expensive online to buy another one).     Reason for getting G5 instead of a P2 is that at the time everyone (including EVGA) was out of P2 850 power supplies.
