Hello,

I currently own a EVGA SuperNova 750 G2 220-G2-0750-XR.  I want to replace it with a SuperNova 1000 G5 220-G5-1000-X1.  The only thing stopping me from pulling the trigger is the hassle it would be to replace the existing cables with the new ones.
My question is, are the cables compatible?  May I just replace the Power Supply and use the old cables that are currently in place?

Thanks,

-Ron

    1) Always best practice to Use the cables that came with the PSU & this includes the cord to the Wall (guage could be different for the Larger PSU

    2) I here what your thinking about the work to replace

--> Normally you could --> Check Both PSU on EVGA site ---> then check that the compatibility tab shows they both use the SAME replacement cables

However there are No cables listed for that G5 1000W PSU    Call CS & ask

See: Which EVGA Modular Cables are compatible with my PSU? in the EVGA FAQs

Cables for 1300 watt and under G2/G3/G5/G+/P2/PQ/T2 models are compatible.

So yeah, you can just swap out the unit and use the old cables that are currently in place.

    Pull the trigger

I would not use the existing cables for a couple of reasons. The G2 series was manufactured by Super Flower while the G5 series is manufactured by FSP so they may have different pin outs for the PSU side cables. Not only that, the gauge wires for the 1000w unit will be thicker to handle the higher rated current on the 1000w model.

While the replacement cables may be the same, meaning the pin out is the same I would still not use the existing cables since they are from a much lower wattage PSU. The replacement cables are probably of a thicker gauge meant to accommodate higher wattage PSUs, you however are not ordering replacement cables, you are intending to use existing cables meant for a 750w PSU on a 1000w PSU.

It will probably be fine since the pin out is the same but why chance it? It's really not that a big deal to swap cables.

Well  EVGA is saying that they're custom cable kits are compatible but then those are not the originals that came with the power supplies either. I would imagine those custom cables are heavier and thats why they are more compatible with more power supplies.

    Thank you!

I think from the information I have from the forum(Thank you all) and what minimal information I get from Google(much less sincere thank you), I am going to pull the trigger and just do the PS Swap.

    Normally I would agree.
My rig has just grown out over time.  The cable management system I installed was a pain in the butt.  I really would not like to repeat the process if at all possible.

    Thanks,

Hey I gave you the info so at least you know what you're getting into. It's your stuff, do with it what you will. It'll probably be fine like I was saying, but if it were me and my money I'd just swap the cables out for the new ones that come with your new PSU. Anyway no hard feelings, GL.
