Per commentary from Intel and IBM, 7nm or 10nm will be the last node for PURE SILICON.
IBM in particular is using a "hybrid" Germanium/Silicon die for their current work on 7nm - but I don't see Ge pushing a lot past silicon.
Moore's law has been creaking hard the last decade, looks like it's going to take a serious hit in the 2020s.
More move towards 3d type chip design might help some, but semiconductors seem to be about to reach their limits - they've been having issues with quantum effects for a couple decades, but every time the size shrinks those issues get a LOT worse.
Might be time to put some serious money into alternate options - carbon nanotube looks promising in the lab so far....
