Seems that random black screens, killing of audio and coming back to desktop (without sound) is en vogue...

Anyone else seen this? it looks like the driver resets (I'm inclined to think it's a driver issues) ....The card is rock solid in games...
but when playing youtube vids and running X1 it'll just...stop at times..

This is with a clean install of Win10 Pro, btw....

Not with my 3090 FTW3 Ultra. Although I did have a black screen / driver crash & recover once 4 days ago. It required a computer restart because the power state was stuck on the lowest setting, but it hasn't happened again.

I found flickering would happen on TV turn on (LG CX, 4K120Hz 10 bit RGB full with HDR and Gsync on), but that turned out to be my 48gbps cable dropping below the 40.1 gbps required because my 3090 was active folding work units and also because it was routed near the power supply. I moved the cable and put some EMI chokers and that problem went away entirely.

If you aren't on the latest hotfix drivers, you should try them: https://forums.evga.com/G...on-45698-m3123704.aspx

Did you put the EMI chokers on the HDMI cable?

Yes, four of them - one on each end, and two in the middle spaced out where it is near my PC. The PSU cable already has a big one built in.

Again, try the hotfix drivers. If you don't want to, I'm sorry but you aren't trying to help yourself.

And if you are running HDMI to a 2.1 HDMI TV, new cable / EMI shield it.

I have tried with G-sync off, same thing......It's kind of weird....I don't think there's anything wrong with the card, but it's under warranty if there is.

I have the hotfix installed...(oddly doesn't show the correct driver type in the control panel tho).....doesn't seem to help.

I'm running Display port....tho I don't think that's it..the whole machine hangs while it's going thru the episode....

I'm really inclined to believe it's a buggy driver..

Mine shows 456.98 right now in the NVCP. I downloaded the standard driver, not the DCH.

You're on an old driver then. 456.55, 456.71, and now 456.98 (based on .71) are newer. .71 / .98 fixed black screen flickering with .98 bringing additional fixes for that problem.

I'm not on an old driver. I installed the hot fix over 456.71

When I check the control panel, it says 456.38, not .98

peruse this (and note, I've tried reinstalling the hotfix..same issue)

I would run DDU to make sure no old drivers exist. Then install the latest driver as well as make sure PX1 is installed. I would also remove any other software you might have used for the old card like Afterburner.

Also it could be worth looking at the power cables and if one cable is using two connections to the card.

Re: Interesting 3090 issue.... 2020/10/22 11:57:00 (permalink)
I attributed some early black screen flashes on my 3090's to a g-sync bug.  On the bench with GSYNC off and OS optimized - no issues.

Have noticed the driver completely restart a few times. Did not research further- I think there is a hotfix for .71

but just read that you are aware so that's no help.

I pretty much DDU in safe mode every driver install for better or for worse.

Seems that random black screens, killing of audio and coming back to desktop....

I have a very similar issue. I was running a 1080Ti before getting my 3090 and I had no issues with my system. Once i installed the 3090 my screen would go black randomly when I'm watching YouTube, sound would play for a few seconds after screen went black, then would cut out until the screen came back on. I have noticed I can get it to do it constantly when I load up Paint.net app. After a crash since there is never any error, I looked at the reliability monitor and that's where it is showing a hardware crash for memory. Here is a screen grab of what I'm seeing. I know it is not my MOBO or ram, as I've tested both just today. I can run my games without incident, no crashes when playing.

Probably a mix of the latest windows updates and the drivers for new card architecture being buggy from nvidia....

Sound over HDMI had been broken on W10 since the 18xx update until 2004 finally re-fixed it. Something in a subsequent mini-update made it less reliable again.. Not as bad as it was, but not fixed completely. I miss my surround setup as I never had that issue before having to use HDMI sound.

The issue was some sort of driver conflict with nvidia and windows when hdmi came back from standby IIRR.
