Is this for EVGA mobos only? Or all X299 boards with VROC header?

No, not really they are from Intel and should work on any Motherboard with a VROC Header.
I just know a lot of X299 Dark Members are looking for them.
Better than the few hundred I have seen on eBay.
I got mine when EVGA first released them and only paid $9.99 each and now $19.99 each.

Beware, This VROC key SKU is only compatible with Intel brand enterprise and professional SSDs, likely not work for other SSDs like Samsung 9x0 series/etc.

If you have question, please post in public forum. I do not reply PMs, so all in community can benefit the answer.

There are a few thread on this but for the most part it is because that is the way Intel wanted it.
Which VROC key do i need to setup Bootable RAID 0 using two Intel 760p M.2 NVME drives?
VROC Raid disk not seen by Windows installer

----> because Intel® VROC on x299 requires the VROCISSDMOD key & additionally X299 system only supports Intel SSDs <----

Intel® Virtual RAID on CPU (Intel® VROC)

Key Benefits
  • Use NVMe drives to their full potential
  • Fewer hardware queues
  • Bootable RAID
  • Host Insert/Surprise removal
  • Closes RAID 5 write hole
  • LED Management
  • Cost-effective and simple

Frequently Asked Questions About Intel® Virtual RAID on CPU

There is 2 versions of Intel® VROC
  • Intel® VROC for enterprise on Intel® Xeon using C600 chipset
  • Intel® VROC for high end user systems on Skylake X processors using X299 chipset
The reason that you are experiencing issues while setting up the raid is because Intel® VROC on x299 requires the VROCISSDMOD key since it is the only key compatible, additionally X299 system only supports Intel SSDs (SM951/961 SSDs and VROCPREMMOD are only supported on the enterprise version of Intel® VROC using Intel® Xeon).

Yes over on Amazon is the cheapest I could find one. This is the "Standard" model. It allows bootable 3rd party drives in Raid 0/1/10 only.

If you don't need a bootable raid array, you don't need this.

Are you using it for boot drive or a data drive? If for data drive consider using Microsoft's Storage Spaces. It eliminates dependency on "dongle" that Intel has seemingly abandoned.

VROC is garbage anyway and only allows you to use Intel drives unless you use that weird workaround for non-boot drives.  I wouldn't bother with it and I have the vroc standard key, don't use it it won't let you use the workaround.

Intel lets you use 3rd party drives in raid now as boot drives with the standard VROC key.

Does not matter what Intel lets you do, it is up to vendor to implement as directly from Intel VROC rep told me.  I contacted them and WD as well to see if I could submit for them to validate but they said they do not take requests to validate drives lol.  I gave up, it could be useful but it is stupid and does not work.  The only time I was able to get it to work was creating RAID0 inside windows GUI using odd driver without key installed, creating it from in the BIOS never worked.  If I had key installed it would say it would be disabled in x number of days.

The amount of time I wasted trying to get this to work, I would advise anyone to skip it and do not bother it is not worth the headche.

That is one of reasons why I gave up pursuing VROC path and went with Storage Spaces. Other one is that one day, when new system comes out, I likely wouldn't be able to move  my array to it, that "dongle" would be chain around my neck. With Storage Spaces I don't have to do anything special. I've reinstalled my Windows several times so far and my "data volume" gets automatically recognized.

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server/storage/storage-spaces/overview

On the surface it can be mistaken for a "software RAID" while it is actually more than that, a "software storage technology". It lets you have storage pools, thin provisioning, tiers, etc., even on your commodity hardware Win10.

I am using it to have 18TB mirrored volume that is hybrid of automatically balanced 2 TB NVMe performance tier and 16 TB SATA capacity tier all with regular hardware. NVMe drives are on Asus M.2 card (but they could've been in M.2 slots too) and SATA drives are on mb's SATA ports. Look for my post titled "This is why I like HEDT ..." or something like that for details.

I've tested that same card with Storage Spaces in both RAID 0 and 1 with both WD SN550 and Evo 970+ and it worked fine in non-VROC storage mode of V 1.23 BIOS on both PE3 and PE4 (two drives when in PE3, four when in PE4). My non-RAID tests were with four drives and RAID with two but I have no doubt RAID would work with four drives, principle is same and Windows does see all four when in PE4.

One thing I have to warn you though: When benchmarking SN550 I would get issues that would manifest themselves as intermittent significant drops in performance accompanied with error messages in event viewer about disconnects. I got no such messages when using 970+ with Samsung's NVMe driver. I am suspecting culprit of issues I had is Microsoft's NVMe driver and/or design of drive (SN550's "cache flushing" resulting in disconnects).

Unfortunately I don't have notes from testing RAID 0 anymore and I'm not in a position to quickly (re)do test for you, sorry :( You can find results for RAID 1 in my HEDT thread but please notice they are for two drives, not four, and they are for 970+.

What you will be able to get from the card depends on which slot you put it in and how many lanes you have left from CPU to that slot. If you put it in PE3 and you have 8 lanes left for it you will be able to use 2 drives. If you put it in PE4 and have 16 lanes left for it you will be able to use 4 drives. Simple rule of the thumb is if Windows can on its own see drive then Storage Spaces will be able to use it.

If you already have Asus card and drives I encourage you to try it to see will it work for you, you got nothing to lose.
