I started a build back in August.  I noticed that the motherboard would reboot like 3x before I could even get into the BIOS.  I managed to install Win 10 and that's as far as I got until last week.  I start it up, same rebooting issues until Windows starts.  I get all of the drivers loaded and it eventually freezes.  I reboot and get the "Overclocking Failed" error even though I wasn't overclocking.  I reboot into Windows and notice half of my RAM wasn't showing.  I go through all of the troubleshooting and still half the RAM is missing, so I figure with the rebooting and memory issue I have a bad CPU.  Luckily I had another CPU with the same socket on hand.  I plop that in and no issues with the system at all.  I contact Intel and after reading all of my troubleshooting they agree to do a standard or cross ship RMA.

Now the punchline........ I received an email today asking me to try without my two 1080 GTX's installed.   I suppose this could be a genuine request before an RMA for an Intel CPU... except that it is an I7 6950X in an X99 motherboard.  I responded back to the email saying that this CPU doesn't have integrated graphics and that I don't believe my motherboard would boot without a GPU installed.  Even if it did, what could I see without a GPU and monitor?  I can stare and the motherboard and try and figure out how much RAM is being seen. :)

The lesson is if you are going to be in technical support for a company, you should know about the products you are supporting.

Maybe Intel wanted to see if the CPU would Post, if so it would have Posted with an Error Code of No Graphics Card if it would Post that is.
What Motherboard and Power Supply do you have?
Have you Tested with only One Memory Stick?

Oh,  I did all of the troubleshooting with the memory and reseated the CPU twice.  I tried every BIOS update from what it was shipped with to the current version.  Two of the channels just weren't being recognized.  After I put a 6850K in, no problems whatsoever. It's a Rampage V 10 with G.Skill Trident Z 3200, but was and is running at 2133, and Corsair AX1500i.  I've run Prime, Heavy Load, and Firestrike Ultra looping (2 x 1080 FTW) with the 6850k (still running stock until under water) and no issues.  I think I actually like the 6850K better.  I've been procrastinating because I have to take this behemoth apart first.......

You are not the only crazy one out there.  I love my case.  It can hold 4 x 480 and 1 x 360 rads.  It's a CaseLabs.  I think I paid like 1400.00 for it including all of the radiator mounts and extras needed for it.  Right know it has a 5850k, Asus Extreme IV Black, 3 x 780 TI's plus 8 HD's and 2 Samsung 850 PRO SSD's.  I can't plug it into my UPS and run everything at full power, too much of a load on it.  I think it pulls like 1100-1200w.

Yes, it's 7th on the list on the original BIOS.  It's right before the Xeons.

I played around with it more today, but no change.  I have a standard RMA number for it now.  I don't need it enough to let Intel hold another 1700.00 for a cross ship, that's for sure.

I have never heard of it before.  I wish I knew about it earlier.  I would have definitely signed up for it when I bought the CPU.  They should include this for free for all Extreme CPU's, IMHO.  You fly first class, you get free drinks and not dragged off the plane.    You buy a 1700.00 CPU, you should be allowed one return.

Been using since 2012, I got the news or info from the info sheet with my Core i7 Extreme Edition i7-3970X CPU.
Most called it a dumb ideal, but most do not spend over a $1000 Bucks on a CPU or Two.
I have all my CPU under this Program other then one I did this to it:
(Even This Program will not help you with a Fried CPU that you have done this to it.)

Having a hard time finding where it covers delids. Getting ready to do it to my 6700K. While I'm out of the registration time frame, if I break it somehow I would like to buy it for the replacement if it does cover delids. I might spring for the 6800K if that's the case.

You'd think everyone that delids their cpu would get caught by intels screening process.

Actually the cpu is running at 63C because of ryzens 20 degree offset. http://www.guru3d.com/new...-reporting-offset.html

Some people... I would hate to be the one person that tries and gets caught. It's nice that Ryzen's ihs is soldered so there isn't a need to delid.

Well the Ryzen's (1800X) runs VERY HOT even under water 83C is the norm I wish I could delid it.

Actually the cpu is running at 63C because of ryzens 20 degree offset. http://www.guru3d.com/new...-reporting-offset.html

Yes I have all the Updates on this and the CPU still Runs a 83C while the CPU Diode Runs at 63C.
The Motherboard Shows 83C and SOME software show 63C based on the CPU Diode.
Most Temperature Software cannot even read this CPU ATM, Aida 64 Extreme Reads Both and AMD Ryzen Master only reads CPU Diode.

After today's Bios update from MSI (1.40) they made some change that now show my CPU at only 72C on the MB at the same CPU Clock and vCore Settings.
The CPU Diode still show the -20C

I just shipped the 6950X back today for the standard RMA.  100.00 for shipping UPS Next day a one pound package 7x4x4.   40.00 shipping and 60.00 for insurance.  The guy looked at me funny at the UPS store when he saw the little box when I asked for 1700.00 insurance.  He asked me if I was shipping gold.  I said yes, an expensive Intel processor.  Go ahead and lose it UPS.......  I prefer Fed Ex, but they are way across town and Office Depot only allows up to 1000.00 insurance.  It's going to UPS anyway.  I guess they are Intel's third party.  Gather them all in one place and send them to Intel.

UPS is horrid with their prices, i always use fedex, when i sent my z170 in for stepup i first checked ups since thats what evga uses, with $300 insurance and shipping ground, 7-10 days, it would have been $45.00, went to fedex office store and with the same amount of insurance and shipping standard ground 3~5 days shipping time it was $15.64, shipped on monday afternoon and was signed for friday morning, (that from NC to CA ) evga shipped the new z270 on the next tuesday and it took 9 days to get here, they use UPS.

The 100.00 was well spent.  I shipped the bad CPU out on Tuesday.  They received on Wednesday.  Shipped the new one out on Thursday and I received it yesterday.  I thought I would get a tray version back, but I received a brand new in the box retail 6950X.  This one actually works.  There were no multiple boots.  Just the one stop that said a new CPU was installed.  All of the memory is recognized.  Realbench and the Intel diagnostic tool passes.  Now to decide if I keep the 6850 or 6950.  There is only a 300Mhz difference in turbo speeds.  Turbo 3 kicks one core to 4 GHz for both.
