Intel Fined 2 Billion USD In Damages For Patent Infringement | TechPowerUp A federal jury in Texas has ruled that Intel Corporation violated two patents of VLSI Technology and must pay 2.18 billion USD in damages. The damages include 1.5 billion for one patent and 675 million for the other. The patents are related to clock frequency control and minimum memory operating voltage technique and were awarded to Freescale Semiconductor Inc in 2012 and SigmaTel in 2010. Freescale bought SigmaTel gaining control of the two patents before being passed to NXP after the company acquired Freescale in 2015, these patents were then transferred to the newly resurrected VLSI Technology in 2019 with the sole purpose of launching a legal battle against Intel. In a comment to Tom's Hardware the company said "Intel strongly disagrees with today's jury verdict. We intend to appeal and are confident that we will prevail.". This legal battle will likely drag-out for several years as Intel plans to appeal the recent ruling. Intel recorded a net income of 5.9 billion USD in Q4 2020 so this fine is by no means insignificant. I personally agree this will be in the courts for quite some time.

Funny how Intel gets fined and not Nvidia for almost the same practice🙄

Where are your sources? NVIDIA has an extremely large patent portfolio.

Your post hasn't been taken down. You're posting that NVIDIA has the same practice, but you don't list any sources to back up your claims.

Nvidia does not design dram those patents involve dram which were manufactured at some other company - they were the ones that truly violated the patent law im ML baseBall i order 200 baseballs from slug me baseballs - i assume everything is on the up and up - not for me to know if they are selling bootleg balls or id using materials or ball makeup design or partila design or simiar seigbn to someone else yes they can get sued - its not primary infringement - its secondary - why? they don't make ball - they don't make the leather - padding stitching.etc they are just going make this one part the GPU(which was not in the suit) - just the ram was lo and behold the company had 17 they filed for and only won 3 - tell me there us a lt of baloney in the patent suit and everyone is shooting spit balls to claw money from anyone i wonder just how many patent porfolio are similar and image the cross suits that can wind up hurting all parties if they start opening all those cans of beans look the problem is not the suits that these companies (who have patents and everybody has similar tech under a different patent - but are virtually identical) bring it the failure of an appropriate patent system that should demand working tech - and anything similar filed - is dead it can't be on paper it has to be manufactured and working to be valid

It's a patent troll company who's sole existence to date has been continued patent litigation. Intel should be able to overturn this in the courts, though it will probably take two years or more.
