Intel CEO Predicts Chips Will Cost 20% of Future Cars' Bill of Materials by 2030 | TechPowerUp

Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger predicts that chips and semiconductors will make up as much of the car's bill-of-materials (BOM) as the engine (or main propulsion) itself. This change will happen as early as in 2030, said Gelsinger, speaking at a keynote address, at the IAA Mobility 2021 show in Munich. Gelsinger's prediction is backed by internal research conducted by Roland Berger, and McKinsey.

As of 2019, chips barely made 4% of a vehicle's BOM, confining mainly to the ECU and an optional infotainment system. By 2030, electronics will take over a more complex set of roles, including full automation, and AI that can drive anywhere. A fully automated vehicle, or AV, will be next big thing in personal transport. Gelsinger predicts a $115 billion TAM (total addressable market) size for automobile semiconductors by the end of the decade.

Of course that means that car prices will probably need to go up as a result (in my opinion).

This also highlights the need for continuing fab expansion.  The chip shortage has cost the auto industry $110B so far this year (Source: cnbc.com).

I predict that any vehicle manufacturer that makes a car where 20% of the cost is a computer processor will go out of business.

I seriously doubt that will happen, particularly since the push is toward more EVs.

they better come up with new advances, new ways.... because their won't be enough raw materials to make that many chips

It's being worked, but they aren't there yet.  This is one approach https://phys.org/news/2020-07-materials-extra-thin-chips.html.

There is no inflation in Ba Sing Se

If someone was wondering why crypto is so strong, this:  Keynesian economics is money printing. And the banks are trying to hide it. But actual real inflation will spill into the production economy eventually, and tech will be first effected.

We're just making a bunch of really expensive big paperweights if we ever have an EMP event. Electronics should be value added, not mission critical in consumer appliances and vehicles. So stupid with covid that my family had a dish washer on 6 month backorder because of chip shortage. It's a freaking dish washer, not the space shuttle. I think the next engineering design mindset will graduate from annual forced obsolescence to annual forced codependence. You want your car to work, subscribe to annual software updates or we'll brick your car for safety reasons......

My neighbor had their car sitting at the dealer for months waiting to get a replacement ECU for his six month old car.  Your last statement is probably going to come to pass in the not to distant future.  It will start with "If you want to keep your warranty valid, then you must do the software updates," and then downhill from there.  I probably won't see it.

They’ll brick it for many more reasons than a simple lack of software updates…

Lack of vaccine shot, questionable social media posts… the sky is endless when it comes to reasons for shutting down everything in your life.

    Fun times we live in!
