[rant] I’m not an Intel basher, their processors are rock solid imho. But there NVMe storage is cheap dreg. Their “professional” series 760p uses TLC (triple level cell) used in thumb drives. Huge noticeable latency with the Intel ultra low power ssd compared to the Samsung 970. Entirely different world of performance. Spend a bit more and get a real ssd with an MLC controller (see: Samsung 970). Prices have come down so there’s no reason to go cheap. Except for a macbook, never opt for more than a base drive in a laptop configuration - just upgrade/ replace once received. You will get the cheap one. My lesson learned. [/rant]

Except in a Mac where it’s now soldered to the board and NOT user replaceable... whoops. XD

True that. I have, however, found the ssd in my 2016 mbpro to be blazing fast. Ditto my wife’s 2017 macbook (non-pro). Zero latency. I’m almost certain they are Samsung manufactured with 2-bit MLC (same as pro versions). They charge a heck of a premium but at least deliver the goods.

I don't know why people even turn to Intel for higher price if they have so solid products as Samsung 850, 860, 960, 970 and similar. Samsung storage last 5 years is legendary, price, performance, reliability. And their customer rate is same as people say for Intel processors. Intel sell slower, more expensive because it's Intel and know that all of us love his hardware. Intel had great SATA III SSD and than Samsung jump and take market for self. Today you buy for just more than 400$ Samsung 860 EVO 1TB and 960 EVO 1TB and don't look on other side before they fix price.

Lol, it's almost like you have to pay 50% more for MLC vs TLC, who would have thought the more expensive thing goes faster? Go read an Anandtech SSD review, Linus is for babies.

1: Linus review is very good and quite technical. He addresses the issue in a relatively sophisticated way. There is simply no argument that anyone with a brain can make that would put high multilayered cell ssd on the same level as single cell ssd. The fewer layers the better. It’s why those big dumb babies at the Pentagon insist on SLC ssds for critical systems. 2: Cost. The Samsung 970 pro has come down hugely in the past year. It uses 2-bit MLC. The best you can get this side of a specialty SLC supplier. Per Newegg: 512 gb Samsung 970 pro $190 512 gb Intel 760p $130 For $60 more you are getting an ssd which is on a different planet of speed and reliability. I’ll give you back your “paci” now...

Hmm, if you include the $10 off on the 760p as you did for the 970 pro, then it's exactly 50% more. Exactly what I said. Who knew?

Ok... if people want more than a toy for surfing the web, $60 is chump change.
This is an *enthusiast* website. When you’re spending $1,200 on a gpu, it’s pretty likely you would like to be informed of the REAL difference between the Intel 760 “pro” and the true PRO card (Samsung 970 pro)

I'm happy with the Samsung Pro SSD I run on several builds As always do your homework & some people do shop at a price point - its all about perceived value

It's 760p, no pro in the name you're the only one who seems to think it's a pro model. The power consumption of a 760p is significantly less than a 970, making it an ideal choice for laptops where you don't need that speed anyway. Just because you don't see a use for a product doesn't mean it's bad, it just means it's bad for you.

It’s a bad value for almost everyone. I got it on my Lenovo T480 (received 2 weeks ago, ssd replaced), it would take a full second from click to response - sometimes longer. That I blame on ultra-low power - which is a gimmick to try and justify [edit: poor performance]. The upgrade option cost me more than a brand new 970 pro. Needless to say - the difference is night and day. [edit: I personally feel the Samsung is a better value at current prices]

OK, that long of a delay for any SSD ... well seems to be some sort of issue... well beyond a slow drive driver issues ? indexing running ? sleep state / power off HD ? Not the kind of performance anyone would tolerate .... might be more than just the drive .... or you got a defective one ?

The new ssd resolved issue. Latency disappears. I will concede Intel drive is not “garbage”. But at current prices the Samsung makes vastly more sense... for most cases. I don’t think it was a driver issue. It was consistent in its behavior. Did not see obvious data errors / corruption - only considerable latency on any initialize operations. Booting, starting an app... etc.

I'm really glad I read this thread and watched that Linus video. I learned a lot. Went back and looked at my build list at the egg and the 970evo I had on the list is MLC. I did good completely by accident. LOL
