I put them on the OS drive, figure it may affect boot times

After I install and reboot, I run CCleaner, (free version)  removes the large amount of unneeded Nvidia install files left behind.

like will it effect performance of any sort, or does it not matter?

I would let them install on the drive which contains your main OS directory.
