I'm currently on an Intel X79 chipset. Should I bounce to the X299 or save on an X99?

I was forced to move out of my x79 classified board and im still a bit upset, but im starting to get over it.
Evga is sending me something newer but I went ahead and got a AM4 Asus Crosshair Hero VI with a 1600x.
Spent 250 on the asus board, 215 on the 1600x CPU, and 158 on the memory.

Not a bad deal bad all.

The AM4 platform looks to have a good future too. If I need more cores I still have the 1700x and 1800x to pick from.
Almost went x399 but its overkill for a gaming rig and the 1900x isnt out yet.

My main reason for jumping from my X79/4820K is Native M.2 NVMe, and my 4820K seem rather weak physics wise with my new 1080Ti. Kinda have an upgrade itch as well, promised myself to wait until Skylake E to upgrade after I dumped the cash I did on IvyBridge E

As long as your popular enough, you can get away with anything.

Slightly older thread but I am there now... I am working on my 5th Dark MB. I KEEP losing my USB 3.0 ports no matter what I do. It seems EVGA is well aware of this. I am waiting on yet ANOTHER RMA... I am getting REALLY tired of ripping my machine apart and rebuilding yet again and again... I am a pretty loyal EVGA guy too given all I own and buy from them but this is my 3rd rebuild in less than a month it gets TIRING replacing MBs again and again... GOOD thing I have that 5 year warranty and advanced RMA but this LAST MB did not even last 3 days before I lost my USB ports again. I will not even go into the reboot issues or the DVD/Blu ray no start issue... EVGA has been good to me but I think its time to move on from the X79... Opinions welcome as usual...

Your post had me scratching my head - I take it these boards that you have been having RMA'd are the X79?
If so sounds like it is time for a refresh / upgrade

I recently upgraded from a 3930K/X79 system to a 7920X/X299. Wasn't really worth it, no noticeable difference. but at least the system will be future-proof for a while.

Really bad luck ?  or you have a USB device that has a short / draws too much current ?

Check I/O shield, fingers and back of MB / case for point of contact ?

Well, they work then they disappear. The only thing that gets plugged into them are USB 3.0 thumb drives. Everything else works perfectly. I did ask for a new rear shield because I still have the original one that USE to have spots for the Evbot and Blue tooth.
But trust me nothing is drawing a lot of power or shorting. When I have spoken to tech support they are not surprised by issue either. I know this will not be n issue on my next rebuild. I will have other issues as usual Yeah!! :-)

I ordered Intel's Core i7-7820X X-Series 3.6 GHz 8-Core CPU to power my MSI Carbon Pro X299 My other question is how does M.2 PCI-E help with gaming performance? Can anyone break this down? Doesn't the video cards and an SSD do that for the user? Why M.2 technology?

To answer your question: SSDs will help with load time of games for sure (and during game transitions where it loads new levels). Besides that it will not likely help performance much, if at all in gaming with 1 exception: if you don't have sufficient CPU memory wherein the SSD would be used as a RAM disk. But if you are running quad DIMM in X299 (which surely you would has that is one of the main selling features of the platform), even if it is only 4x4GB, then you are unlikely to need more in games. And if ever you ended up using a storage disk as a RAM disk you would be far better off spending shekels on more memory.

Second part of answer: M.2 PCIe memory comes in two varieties. SATA (much slower, old interface suck on new M.2 form factor) and NVMe (which utilises 4 PCIe 3.0 lanes). If you are buying new for a X299 system you want NVMe... much faster.

Its such a shame that intel is playing hardball with PCIE pipes on their new chips.  With X99 you won't have the expernsive CPU problem, but with X299 you get all the nice new motherboard options (just that the CPI will be PCIE limited, unless you spend a small fortune on it).

Makes me just want to go Z370 and single GPU.

I'm thinking native NVMe isn't such a big deal, when you just buy a PCIE 4x adapter card and be done with the upgrade.

Well X399 motherboards are pretty nice. And early adopter problems are being ironed out. It is a shame that EVGA is not offering X399 motherboards. I have their X99 Micro2 and I love the look of the X299 Dark, but I am not sold on X299 as a platform compared to X399.
