Hello Everyone,

I bought my EVGA X299 ftw k motherboard back in 2018, so the BIOS of it must be very old version. Recently I finally got an CPU for it -- an i9-10920x. I knew I need to have the newer version BIOS so that the 10th Gen CPU can run with the motherboard. However, I do not have an old CPU to update the BIOS.

Here is my question. From this forum, I got some conflict information:
1) some posts said I have to get an old CPU or a pre-flashed BIOS chip to solve the problem,
2) but some other posts said even I can not get into OS,  I can still get into BIOS  with the old version BIOS,  and then I can flash the BIOS by myself.

Could someone help to confirm that which one is correct? With 10th Gen CPU and older BIOS version, can I get into BIOS to flash it?

Thank you very much.

BTW, I tried by myself and I can not get into the BIOS.  What I got are 3 beeps and the POST code is df. I am not sure if that means some hardware problem or not.

You need to always clear CMOS before you install a new CPU..You can try doing that now if you haven't already.

The EVGA CPU Compatibility list for an X299 FTW K says "Cascade Lake-X CPUs can boot into the BIOS with older BIOS versions, but will not function properly until updated to at least version 1.20", but that doesn't seem to be the case.

If it doesn't work with the new CPU, you'll need to:
    1. Move the motherboard BIOS Selector Switch to the other position and see if it works
    2. Put an older/supported CPU in it and update the BIOS
    3. Take it to a PC repair shop and have them do it if they have an older/supported CPU
    4. Contact EVGA Customer Service and get another removable BIOS chip that's updated

I had the same problem with the df post code and EVGA had to send me a BIOS to get it up and running. Funny enough, I purchased my X299 FTW K back in 2018 during a really good sale at Newegg, and I got a 10940X several months ago when I finally found it at MSRP.

Register your motherboard if you already haven't: https://www.evga.com/support/register.asp

Then open a support ticket asking for an updated removable BIOS chip, they'll likely ask you to verify your shipping address too: https://www.evga.com/support/ticket/support.aspx

Or call EVGA directly and ask for one (you'll probably still need to have the motherboard registered): https://www.evga.com/about/contactus/

The BIOS chip is small (so be careful and take your time), and there is a proper orientation to put it in - a little white/grey mark. Just pay attention when removing the old one.

bob16314 and arestavo: Thank you so much for your rapid and helpful reply. It is a big relief for me to know that it is only a EVGA misstatement rather than some hardware problem. You know, my motherboard probably is out of warranty even before I open the box...

arestavo: I think we bought the motherboards in the same promotion back to 2018 . Finally find some affordable CPU for it!!!

EVGA: Could you please fix the misstatement "Cascade Lake-X CPUs can boot into the BIOS with older BIOS versions, but will not function properly until updated to at least version 1.20"? It is not only false but also scary for people having new CPU with old BIOS...

I have not unboxed my FTW/K yet either.  But my mATX 2 with 10920X came up in BIOS and I did an update from BIOS on a flash drive.  Everything just worked.

PS: do not try this on a Z270 and a 9600k.  You will need an 8th gen CPU to update the BIOS so you can then use a 9th gen CPU.
