It'll be a while before the 7700K is obsolete, so I would stick with it for a few years.

I crammed mine with a lot of RAM and SSD storage to speed up my processes, and my only bottleneck is really my old video card more than anything else.

If I had a 2080 ti right now and the cash, my only thought on improving the system's 4k would be adding another 2080 ti so I could bridge them. As I don't currently do VR on my rig, I can't give any advice on that particular process.

What mobo and case are you using, btw? I run a Z270E in an X31 Core TG case.

from what I am reading it will depend on your video card. a 7700k is bottle necked by the 2080ti. Now sure how badly at 4k though.
I am in kinda the same spot you are, I have a i7 7700k and really need to replace my videocard, so i am considering a i9 9900k, new mobo and a 2080ti, my wallet however is having other ideas

    Asus RIVE
    Intel 3960x
    Corsair ax1200
    Coolmaster CosmosII
    Mushkin pc3 16 gigs
    corsair H100
    eVGA gtx 980 ti SLI
    Windows 7 64
