I had mentioned a couple times I won a z490 mobo in a giveaway. Just like I couldn't afford to upgrade my gpu, I couldn't afford to pick up a processor or ram for it. Now I can get a processor and ram, but figured it would be worthless to stick a 660 into that motherboard regardless of what proc and ram I went with. I've had a 1000 watt Thermaltake power supply in there since my last one burned out so I'm good there.

If yall really want to know what else is in this dusty ass rig, it's an evga x58 sli3 board, overclocked i7-950, and 24gb of DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800).

For the z490 I'm looking at a core i7-10700 and 32gb of ddr4 3200. But that all fluctuates on how much I end up spending on the video card at the end of the day.

Then this old toaster can be turned into a media pc or something.

That's actually not a bad setup.

If you're getting a 3080 (or 3070 even for that matter), you're gonna have to upgrade your monitor. At the very least you'll want to have 1440p 144hz to take advantage of the card, so that's an additional $350~ you should set out for that, assuming you want a standard 27" and not ultrawide. That's over $1000 for a GPU upgrade with the 3080. I can guarantee that that isn't the best use of your resources, and it's clear that you don't have the finances to splurge on whatever you'd like. I came from a GTX 750ti and I can tell you that any upgrade to your GPU will be massive. I get the 30 series is the shiny new toy, but I can promise you that you will be just as content with a cheaper upgrade.

The 3080 let alone the 3070 is complete overkill for that screen.  It will never fully utilize those GPUs.

For the cost of a 3080, you're honestly better off upgrading the screen to a 27" 1440p 60 or 120 hz with a RTX 2060/2060/2070/2080 SUPER which still gets you Ray Tracing and a upgraded gaming screen.  New or used, it's a win-win with this option.

Unless your running a high refresh rate high resolution monitor or VR headset you should not be buying a 3080

Depends on what kind of gaming he plans to do but I tend to agree. Personally, I can't imagine going back to 60hz, so I'd sacrifice resolution to get higher refresh rate. With how cheap  good 1080p 144hz monitors are now, you can get a solid used TN panel for <$100, and upgrade in the future when necessary. Personally, I'd buy used and pair it with a 2070 or 2060s. Looking quickly at used prices, it will run you around $400 for both. If you don't like going used for GPU, around $500.

You'll hit 144fps on pretty much anything you play on that, and just by sacrificing resolution, you save $600-700, or $400-500 compared to the 3070.

You just have to ask yourself. Is playing at 1440p vs 1080p worth the additional $400-700? Judging by OP's posts, I lean no.

I didn't see much info stating if he games or not, etc. but just giving him options just as you have.  Was trying to save him from a bad investment if his PC isn't properly configured for one (3080).

You prefer he stays at 1080p while I think he should bump his resolution than the refresh rate.  The higher the refresh rate could cause GPU whine which might drive him nuts. lol  Is he a competing FPS shooter?  Not sure but I haven't seen him state anything of that sort.  Usually people love the increase in detail.

I came from a 24" 1080p 60hz to a 27" 1440p 120/144hz screen, both TN panels and now to a 27" 4K IPS, HDR, etc.  I felt there was a difference but clearly coming from 1080p to 4K would be your biggest jump.

Staying with 1080p but at a higher hz doesn't increase the detail (PPI) so I figured, why not make the move to an increasing standard of 1440p like most are doing.  For reference, 1080p has 81 PPI while 1440p has 108.  The higher the better but again in all instances whether its higher hz or increase in PPI, it all depends on budget, personal preference, etc.

Again, I think how much he's willing to spend is all up to him but just giving him ideas and options just as you have done.

Ah yeah I assumed it's for gaming reading through the thread. And since most GPU's performance values are measured off of FPS, I assume that's a major factor in purchasing decision. Whether OP prefers FPS to resolution is up to him.

I just can't imagine going back to 60hz, my eyes hurt from just thinking about it

Feels, that's very similar to my 2009 build that lasted just shy of a decade before a cascade failure forced me to finally upgrade on a tight budget. Some things improved for me and was able to slowly upgrade over the course of a couple years. Now on an ASUS ROG Strix X470f, Ryzen 3800x w/ Corsair AIO, 32GB Corsair Vengeance @ 3200, 1000W EVGA Supernova G3, EVGA RTX 2070 Super FTW3 Ultra w/ Hybrid Kit, & Elgato 4k60Pro MK2, all in my 2009 HAF 932 case. I do Content Creation which is how I justified some upgrades I would otherwise not be able to justify.

A 3080 would be brutally bottlenecked by your current setup though. You could spend that same amount and definitely be better off getting a complete overhaul and new build with a lower end GPU before going full 3080.

Here are some build guides to give you ideas:

I don't personally feel we should coddle people just because their feelings are hurt. Maybe it's the war vet in me, but life is hard. On the other hand, life is also what you make of it. If you are struggling that much, it's best to fix priorities and focus on the things that matter most. Your health and your family's health should come first. With that, financial stability helps mental stability. As long as you have other things that require monetary attention, those should be caught up first before buying a new graphics card.

My life has just been utter lately. I'm not going to bore you with the whole sob story, its similar to a lot of people, laid off due to covid, scratching to meet bills, etc.

We got a windfall and I was really hoping I could get a new video card. I am running an EVGA 660 TI . It's sad I know, but its literally all I could afford. I was hoping to finally be able to upgrade it to something substantial today with a 3080, even if it was one of the lower clock 3080s, but no. Wasnt to be. Never saw it in stock, never got evga to load, newegg just kept telling me out of stock, it never flipped. I had notifications at newegg, evga, best buy, amazon, no emails from any retailer. I got up at 5 am my time specifically so I could be online and present to try and get the card, even set up autorefreshers.

Guess I keep using my card that literally can't run modern software. Thanks EVGA. I've been buying your products exclusively for almost 20 years now. motherboards, graphics cards, power supplies, etc. Guess I don't matter.

I guess I'm really the odd man out here, as I was raised to build a savings account and a "rainy day" account, so if major events like this pandemic happen... I can survive it (12 months worth of bills saved up). Sorry to say, but this is the problem with America these days and the entitlement. I certainly don't make a ton of money; no where near 6 figures, but I'm still able to sock money away and afford those things that I "really" want.

Come on people lay off the judgmental statements and public shaming.  It is one thing to speak to a loved one in private about their life choices and another to speak out in a public internet forum to someone you do not know.

Couldn't disagree with you more, and this is part of the issue these days brother... we're not holding each other accountable. If you're struggling to make ends meat, and put food on the table, you have no business spending $800 on a graphics card. Sorry, but I'd really like my Focus RS (2018) back, but I had a drunk driver hit me and total the car with 500 miles on it. Can't buy them anymore, tough ****. I'd really like to go out now and buy a Porsche GTS or Turbo S but guess what, my finances won't allow it. You act like having a high end gaming computer is some sort of God given or American Right?!

Why the above? Because inevitably myself and others as consumers will have to pay for his debt, just like medical bills etc. You do realize that product loss (theft) is built into pricing right? **You're just more proof that the average American doesn't understand how commerce and the free marketplace works. So when this guy goes out and buys a graphics card on his credit card, then goes into default and then fails to pay, guess who's interest rates make up for the loss?
