So figured to add the CPU slot to FAH but holy crap runs way hot and way low PPD. I could probably google CPU folding but im guessing I should just leave the CPU slot off like i have been or will the PPD equalize eventually?

    Not really worth Folding on the CPU, back in the BigAdv Days yes but not anymore.

    +1 !!  The electric spent is not worth PPD.

    only worth if it you have a threadripper, EPYC or massive xeon, really.

    3x the electric of GPU folding and 1/10 the PPD ..... enough said

    But you can take a look at the EVGA BOINC team. The CPUs do a lot of good work.
    Looking for cures for Ebola, Aids, childhood cancer and more. Also there are projects to map the stars, to find large prime numbers and more.
    We are a small but active team doing many challenges and sprint races EVGA vs. other teams.
    There is a whole EVGA crunching/BOINC team. Every CPU counts in BOINC.

    Ryzen 1800x does an easy 100k+ ppd with A7 WU, threadripper and EPYC should easily get double that.  So not 1/10 the ppd unless you have a 1080Ti, and not 3x the electric cost :)  Plus there are projects that are only CPU bound, so they are important.

    Re: I normally do GPU folding 2018/02/05 08:07:48 (permalink)
    Nibbler My i7- 5960X = 16 cores  & 5930K = 12 cores & Rig #2 in signature 4970K = 8 cores
     (5960X -- 4 Cores not used for system GPU control)

    5960X CPU was 1/3 of the PPD/W at best, of any of my 10 series GPU is closer to reality from my tests --->around 125K - 300K PPD for 12 cores - limited testing
    (sorry if I embellished so much, had to find my notes from months ago)

    the PPD/W was SAD in my limited testing -- CPU created much more heat & increase in Wattage was very noticeable (but not recorded) pulled through the UPS

    My personal results with 9 different GPU: (Big picture -- 250 Million points/Month)

    ~ 2600 Watts 24/7 for all my Rigs dedicated Folding

    Titan X p --> 1.2M - 1.5M - PPD under water (around 300W)
    1080Ti --> 900K - 1.2M - PPD hybrid  (300W)
    1080 FE air cooled 700K - 950 K - PPD  (300W)
    Titan X SC under water 600K - 900K - PPD (around 275 Watts)

    the WU of course make a big difference

    Yes there was a massive shortage of A7 work units in the past, and they are slowly fixing the situation as more and more projects move to the new A7 WU and leave the ancient A4 WU behind.  A4 doesn't use AVX, but instead uses SSE, while A7 does use AVX.  The point difference is astound, as a 6950 working on A7 WU will average 150k ppd, but will only get 65k ppd on A4, and will not be doing the same amount of science either :(.

    yeah i was only using a 6700k, why over clocked i thought it would melt with the temps /s. i have my answer, its not worthwhile other then for the goodwill factor.

    CPU folding is a waste of power and time today - but there are many BOINC projects that are still CPU only.

    Now that vorsholk has stopped his abuse, I'm returning to folding.
     I no longer MOO due to abuses by certain "whales" in the Gridcoin community - so I now work the Distributed.net project directly again.

    I remember when Distributed.Net added the PS3 client, but didn't get involved in Folding 'till long after the PS/3 was no longer viable for FAH.
    The total CellBE (PS/3 client) production alltime would still rank 15'th on the individual rankings (right behind my MooWrapper and older accounts total production) - and equates out to about 1300 days worth of work for a single Vega 64 or GTX 1080 ti.

    How much of that Ryzen 1800x are you using to get 100K PPD? Are you GPU folding in that system at all?
